The back half of the poll is hard to sort through, and the results of the next two weeks will change everything. This is the best I can figure for now, though. As always, your comments and suggested revisions are appreciated.

Penn State should be ranked

They have two close losses at Michigan and at Illinois. Their only home loss is to tOSU. They dominated Wisconsin, and beat Purdue, Iowa and Indiana (all with winning records). Compare that to BYU's record ...

I'm with you on LSU-Oregon

Right now I've got them 1-2, but if KU wins out, they've got to jump both. Same, perhaps, with Missouri.

And I feel bad for Oregon because they have a history of being left out of big games (most notably when Nebraska got in the 2001 championship game over them) and this is shaping up to be another one of those times.

Also, reluctantly have to say that if the land thieves beat an undefeated Kansas convincingly in the Big 12 CG they'd have to jump to No. 1 as well.

Keep an eye on LSU/Oregon. Oregon has no substantial obstacles left but UCLA (maybe, on a given day) and Oregon State are decent teams and if Oregon beats them in particularly impressive fashion we should at least consider them over LSU if the Tigers continue to stink it up. Still, the latter control their own fate and even solid wins over Arkansas and Tennessee/UGA/Florida should keep them in the top 2 regardless of what Oregon does. If they were to defeat Georgia in a dominant performance they should stay number one irrespective of who the Big 12 champion is and how impressive the look doing it.

3 loss teams

What is your reasoning sandwiching 3-loss Florida and Tennessee in between 2-loss Georgia, Virginia, Texas, and Virginia Tech.

Florida - one win over a team in your top 25 (Tenn)
Tennessee - one win over a team in your top 25 (UGA)

Virginia - one win over a team in your top 25 (UConn)
Virginia Tech - one win over a team in your top 25 (Clemson)

Given that their wins seem to be similar and they have lost only two games, I don't see why they are behind.

You could definitely shuffle 'em around

I think Florida's stomping of Tennessee and South Carolina, along with near-road win at LSU give them a healthier resume than some of the others.

But you could make a fine case for shuffling these teams around. I'll provide a more detailed ballot explanation for the final two weeks, as teams in contention for BCS bowls are sorted out.

South Carolina

I guess I'm not that excited about a South Carolina team that has lost four straight games. I'm just not convinced that the SEC is that good outside of LSU and Georgia (who is getting better). The rest just have resumes that consist of beating each other.

I know that this isn't a power poll...

...but Clemson is playing some very good football right now. Traditionally, once they get on a roll, they have wilted once the lights come on. But for now, they're playing as well as anyone in the ACC (yippee, I know) and I'm interested to see how they handle a struggling BC team this weekend.

Virginia has

looked horrendous all year. The Miami game was something of an eye opener but remember the beating they got from an otherwise putrid TAMU. Don't know what to make of it but considering their struggles in all other games I'd drop them behind Illinois at 16. I'm inclined to think the latter's victory at the Oval more impressive that the beat down at the OB.

Boy, I really spaced out and for some reason reversed the route. I even recall being impressed with OU for having slaughtered the 'Canes.

Scratch that. However that game Miami struggled with Duke and has lost 4 of 5. The one win was a comede of errors vs FSU. Hard to know what to make of this but I'm inclined to think Miami is a horrible team (what does that say about TAMU). I stand by my assessment that Virginia is at best a mediocre team that has managed to eek out wins. They deserve a ranking for those accomplishments. But Illinois has looked consistently good from the close call against Missouri, to wins against Penn State and Wisconsin and finally the geuninely impressive win in Columbus. The teams ranked ahead of them have also, I think, palyed at a higher level with greater consitency than Virginia. This year wins are wins but a ranking in the low teens seems more appropriate.

i think

that if Kansas wins out that they deserve to be #1 because they took care of buisness and won all of their games. but on the other hand, i dont think kansas will be winning out

....this case could have gone away in less than 6 months. And that is exactly where the case was going. It didn't due to the "influence" of extremely wealthy white grandparents. If you Google the Texarkana paper articles covering the case at inception, you'll see it was alleged she was asking for the sex. People who don't understand race relations in East Texas shouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions (not targeted at anyone in particular.) Especially when big money and influence are involved.

I don't care if a 12 year old is begging for sex, it is very wrong to give it to them.

People who don't understand the devastating effects that this kind of thing can have on children, should not be so quick to blame the victim.

not even gonna go there
personally don't care too much about this case
but people shouldn't be so naive to say that we're beyond the time where people are judged by the color of their skin

or they make fun of tech's receivers ... that's strictly from a football perspective ... real quick

Two Questions

I have not been following this case and don't know anything more than what is on this blog, but 2 questions arise. First, I don't mean to blame the victim, but what is a 12-year-old doing at a post-prom party? Those are usually after midnight, right? What kind of prom was it, an elementary school prom? Did she look alot older? Did she lie about her age? Why was a 12-year-old out that late? Second, why is it that what this guy did was bad enough to get him kicked off the team but not bad enough to cost him his scholarship or get him kicked out of school? (I guess that is more than 2 questions.)
