40AS Non-Conference Game of the Week
Here we are at the last week of the regular season and we're right back where we started: with LSU. The Tigers are #1 and are playing a very important game for lots of teams (including Texas). It's Thanksgiving week but we know how important we are to the Horns winning. All LSU has to do is ignore the rumors that Les Miles might leave, contain Ryan Perrilloux's crime of the week, and tackle Darren McFadden. It should set the stage for a good Friday of football watching, so we preview LSU vs. Arkansas. We expect that since Texas plays against aggie at the exact same time as this game, this preview will be the one and only time most of you pay any attention at all to this game (except to occasionally check on it during Horns commercials, only to wonder loudly how it's possible that 2 football games could be at commercial at the same time, every time. We hate that too), so we'll see what we can do to help.
Not necessarily football-related reason to like Arkansas: There really aren't many. Northern Arkansas is really pretty as we found out during our road trip there in 2004. Also, this is the second to last time that we can make comments like "Nutt to replace Dick with Johnson for the game with the Gamecocks." Darren McFadden is fun to watch too, so there's a third reason. This paragraph took an hour and a half to write.
Not necessarily football-related reason to like LSU: Aside from the hiccup at Kentucky, the Tigers have given us no reason to believe they won't win this game. They have also given us no reason to believe that this game won't be very much in doubt until the final 3 minutes or less. Les Miles' "Cardiac Tigers" may not lose again before he takes off for Michigan, but you can bet they'll cause several Cajun heart attacks along the way. Perhaps more importantly, a big reason to like LSU is that no one tailgates like Tiger fans. This is partially because of the abundance of available space on the LSU campus, partially because of the fact that jambalaya tastes better than most folks' tailgate food, and partially because many fans are having their Thanksgiving meal of bourbon-stuffed bourbon bottles with bourbon sauce on campus right now.
Why Texas fans should care: Where do you want to be on New Year's eve? New Orleans sounds fun, no? If you want to see Texas in the Sugar Bowl then LSU going to the national title game is essential. LSU in the #1 spot of the BCS opens up the Sugar Bowl for an at-large team and gives them the first pick. We think the Sugar Bowl takes a 10-2 Texas team over a Georgia team coming off a loss in the SECCG. Of course, things get dicey if Tennessee beats Kentucky this weekend, thus leaving UGA coming off a (probable) win over Georgia Tech. But again, all of that is moot unless LSU takes care of business and vacates the SEC's automatic spot in the Sugar.

Better for LSU to Win?
Since hoping is free, wouldn't it be better to hope for LSU to lose to Ark and to lose the SEC championship game?

James Street
Thanks for the video. Street has long been my favorite Longhorn player. Someone, maybe Royal, once said, "Street couldn't pass very well and he couldn't run very well, all he could do was win."

Disch Field
At one time I lived on a couple of blocks from Disch Field. I spent many a spring afternoon watching one of the great 1-2 punches in baseball, when Street would pitch the first game of doubleheaders, then just seven innings, followed by Burt Hooten.
A sideshow to that was rows of pro baseball scouts, sometimes approaching 20+, who attended those games. Usually they sat up on the first base side, sometimes a few behind the plate. Street was a gritty bulldog of a pitcher, just as competitive as he was on the football field, and that team would follow that lead. We would see that same sense of combativeness in his son decades later. James was a hell of a player.
The ambiance of that field, with wonderful Billy Goat Hill, and that old covered, wooden stadium brought alive by Street and Hooten and those teams are some of my favorite memories.
A side note: The Horns didn't wear those those orange leggings much like they did in the Arkansas game, but they sure complement those white uniforms. In all the conversations here about uniforms and helmets, I don't remember them being mentioned. I hope they wear them tomorrow.

I think the Sugar would take Florida...
... with their replacement pick assuming the Gators beat FSU this weekend. Yeah, they'd have 3 losses, but they also have the probable Heisman Trophy winner in Tim Tebow, they are from the SEC, and they would bring about as much money to the game as Texas would. The Sugar Bowl would definitely be cool, but I think it's not in the cards for the 'Horns.

^ That is...
... if Georgia wins the SEC East of course. If Tennessee wins the East, then Georgia is a no-brainer for the Sugar.

Since the Sugar Bowl...
...has last pick this year, wouldn't that mean we'd probably get the WAC champ matchup if they don't stumble down the stretch? Hawaii could beat Boise and then lose to Wazzu, but other than that, one of them will be in the BCS, and the Sugar will get stuck with them. Since we would like a good matchup, why not root for the Sugar to get tied up and let us go to the Fiesta or Rose (ASU slides into the title as madness and rioting envelopes the XII)?

The school
administration will, properly of course, want the cash but I'd rather play in the Holliday or Cotton than Hawaii or Boise in the Sugar. There's relatively little to win there and a lot to loose.
I don't think we can get into the Rose though unless tOSU somehow ends up in the MNC game. Of course for this to happened it would help for LSU to loose. Confused? You may not be Horn Brain, but my brain is reeling.
In any case I'm hoping for a nice blowout with the issue at aTm settled early in the 3rd quarter so that I can watch what is very likely to be an exciting end to the LSU game.

If LSU plays for the title
against a team (Kansas/Missouri) from the Big 12, there is no way we play in the Sugar Bowl. The Sugar would get the first pick, but they are prevented from taking a team from the same conference that has placed the other team in the title game (Big 12).
So, the Sugar would take either Florida at 9-3 or Georgia, assuming they don't play for the SEC title, with their pick and then the Fiesta would take a Big 12 team (hopefully Texas) with their replacement pick.

Thanks, AW...
We were unaware of that particular provision. That's really interesting. The Cotton Bowl or Fiesta Bowl wouldn't be so bad...

Or
Let's say OU wins the Big 12 and automatically goes to the Fiesta Bowl and that LSU wins out and plays West Virginia for the national title.
The Sugar Bowl would get to pick first b/c they would be picking a replacement team. That is how things could get interesting. The Sugar could take Georia or Florida if they wanted an SEC team, but Texas would be a very attractive pick for sure.
The Sugar also gets the very last selection. If Boise State or Hawaii qualify, either of them would be the last team taken and play in New Orleans. The pressure would be on the Sugar Bowl to get a team that travels well b/c neither of those teams do.
