Open GameDay Thread: Texas at Texas A&M

Game 12: Texas at Texas A&M

Texas Longhorns (9-2, 5-2) at Texas A&M Aggies (6-5, 3-4)

Friday, November 23, 2007 · 2:30 p.m. CT

Kyle Field (82,600) · College Station, TX

Television: ABC

Radio: 98.1 FM / 1300 AM (Austin)

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgivings and had a chance to spend time with family, friends, food, and football. Now, game day is here, and I'm especially grateful to have such a great community of fans to enjoy the 'Horns with. I didn't say so yesterday, but let me do so today: I'm deeply appreciative of everyone's support of late. From well wishes for my mother to birthday shout outs - I feel blessed. Thanks all.

And now, Friday, Texas retakes the field in an incredibly important game for this program. A win gets Texas to 6-2 in conference play, forcing Oklahoma to win on Saturday to win the South Division. A win also puts Texas in the clubhouse with 10 wins and solid position for BCS consideration.

So let's do this. I'm on record predicting a double-digit Texas win, and most burnt orange faithful I know expect the same. That optimism is entirely predicated on this team actually turning the corner we think it may have. Which is why this game is so important.

Finally, a few gameday items of interest to prep you for the clash in Kyle:

I'm sure you all remember how badly Texas struggled last season to get the Aggies off the field on third down during the embarrassing 12-7 loss in Austin. A&M converted 10 of their 16 third downs in 2006, including what seemed like 14 in a row during the game-winning drive in the fourth quarter. Texas, meanwhile, was successful in just 2 of their 9 third down tries.

Curious, I looked up the Longhorns' and Aggies' third down conversion rates for both 2006 and 2007, both on offense and defense. The Longhorns have improved significantly on offense, while remaining mediocre on defense. The Aggies, however, have suffered a marked decline in performance. Excellent on third down on both offense and defense in 2006, the Aggies have totally collapsed on defense in 2007, ranking 110th nationally in getting teams off the field on third down. Click the graphic on the right for a look at the chart showing each team's national ranking in third down efficiency over the past two seasons.

If you missed the series earlier this week: Setting the Stage for the Game / A Look at A&M / Texas Keys to Victory.

Kirk Bohls takes a very critical look at the Texas defense and asks: Can Duane Akina keep his job at this rate? Bohls goes so far as to note that "inside sources" indicate Akina's job is far from secure heading down the final stretch of games.

Barking Carnival provides an X's and O's breakdown of defending A&M's option attack.

then I think we should be looking for another DC after the bowl game.

Tellus Done?

First I've heard of this.

TE Martellus Bennett, with the self-anointed moniker of 'Money', has upset some Aggie fans with what was considered premature comments that he intends to take-the-money-and-run by bolting to the NFL following his junior season.

Another tidbit

The Horns are ranked right behind the Aggies, giving up 267.6 ypg. The Big 12 has suspended starting SS (and A&M's fourth-leading tackler) Alton Dixon for the first half for taking a swing at Missouri TE Chase Coffman on November 10.

We should take advantage, use the quick-strike offense that we rolled out at Iowa State, and take a 21-point lead into halftime. I bet Shipley would love to have a big game against his friend and former teammate. The start of that game was probably my most pleasurable TV viewing of the year.

Life is an Occasion. Rise to it.

This is it, men (and ladies)...

This is why we watch the games.  Our season, and no doubt the solidarity of the football program are at stake today.  We will face an opponent on their field, their terms.  This opponent has nothing to lose.  Nothing, nothing, would be sweeter to them than to drag us down into the hell which they have created for themselves.  Do not expect an easy victory today - Create one.  Do not let them take from you what they have already lost for themselves.

This is not the time for almost.  After training all year, this is not the time to be stopped on third down, nor the time to give up an extra yard.
Offense:  Let's get six.
Defense:  Not one yard.

Don't bend.  Break them.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

OK, that was mostly just for me...

... I am so pumped for this game.  I hope someone from the team realizes how big this is to the fans.

Watch game ONLINE?

I'm out of the country this week and having trouble locating the game online. Moose, UTbilisi, anyone else know where a stream can be found? It has been mentioned on myP2P forum but no answer yet as to a source. It appears that ESPN360 will NOT be showing it.

Thanks!

Javorskie Lane and Jermichael Finley = Family

Forget about the lovefest between Stephen McGee and Jordan Shipley.  According to the Statesman, Aggie RB Lane and Texas TE Finley are actually blood relatives.  The two were born just two months apart to the same daddy (and obviously different mothers...although if anyone is going to develop during just a two-month gestation period, Finley is just enough of a physical freak to do it).  The father managed to be absent in both sons' lives, leaving their maternal grandmothers to raise them.

Over/Under

How many times do you think you will hear "Texas Aggies" during the game?  It's like saying Texas Red Raiders, Oklahoma Cowboys, Florida Seminoles.  Perhaps we need Walter Cronkite to expand on his statement.  "We're Texas.  You're not."

I don't blame him because he's too valuable as our best WR.

However, it doesn't even seem like he's running hard and is being conservative on these punts/kick offs, probably just to make sure he doesn't get beat up.

This is a joke, and I'm wondering why no one in the media has even brought this up to Mack about the poor return game. Do we really have no one else to return punts? Chiles? Ogbannaya? Shipley? Jones?

Horns won't use pressing defense.

Traditionally that's what we've done with spread; DBs up on WR, pressure coming. Now we just wait for the short completion. I don't see you even call this defense. It's a prevent D state of mind. If we were slow, maybe.....but we're not. Just dumb to me.

We need some new blood.

I grow weary of that shit, too.

Aggies can't play any better the second half; Horns can play vastly better. That's how the coaches will present it to the Horns. Sorta standard coaching fare in this situation.

But Horns didn't attack aggressively, one of PB's key points going in.

by whills on Nov 23, 2007 4:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

by Texas Our Texas on Nov 23, 2007 4:31 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Why?

Why is it that the Texas coaches are always so surprised by what the other team is doing on both sides of the ball that they have to frantically make adjustments at half-time?  Why are the players always so laid-back in the first half that they have to have a fire lighted under them at half-time?  Why do we alswys play down to the oter team's level?  It looks like the team is just not ready to play most games.  (Tech being the lone exception this year.)

Greg Davis

has engineered one TD against this "intimidating" Aggie defense in the past two years.

Would a 2-game losing streak against the Ags finally tip the scales toward revamping this staff? It has to come at some point. Christ, this A&M team has been absolutely whipped by some mediocre teams in that span, and we can't even score against them.

by BrooklynHorn on Nov 23, 2007 4:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

After the OSU game... are you kidding me? Down 35-14 in the 4th.

I hope no one has given up because that would be pathetic. Don't even think about last year. Their defense is much worse this year.

We finally figured out at the end to just use JC and destroy them. I'm telling you. JC will explode this half again.
