Open Gameday Thread: Texas vs. Arizona State (Holiday Bowl)
Holiday Bowl: Texas vs. Arizona State
Texas Longhorns (9-3, 5-3) vs. Arizona State (10-2, 7-2)
Thursday, December 27, 2007 · 7:00 p.m. CT
Qualcomm Stadium (70,561) · San Diego, CA

Television: ESPN
Radio: 98.1 FM / 1300 AM (Austin)

This is your official gameday thread for the final Texas game of the season. If you're in the San Diego area, head to the game. PB, 54b, and countless other BONers and Longhorn fans will be tailgating all afternoon. If you're not in southern California, like me, get your laptop ready.
Even though this is not a BCS or national championship game, there are still tons of reasons to tune in. How will the defense look, especially against the pass? Will Jamaal Charles have another breakout game that leads to the NFL? Will John Chiles step on the field?
Win or lose, this is an important game. Would a loss cause the staffing changes that most BONers think we need? Or would a win make the A&M game look like an anomaly and allow 2008 to look rosier than it would otherwise?
See you tonight.
Update [2007-12-27 16:5:45 by awiggo]: Two more things. 1.) PB reports that it's 80/20 ASU to Texas fans outside the stadium. Guess San Diego is a little less appealing after Glendale and Miami were possibilities just five weeks ago. 2.) As noted in the comments, another thing to look for this evening will be who starts. We've heard for weeks that all jobs are open. If KBD are still the starting linebackers, we'll know that was just lip service.

i'll be sporting my VY jersey
...he's bailed us out before.
Mack presser
Heard a quote from the ole coach this morning: "The Holiday Bowl has become our home away from home."
Um, ok. Good vacation spot. I guess OU's home away from home is Tempe ... make that Glendale now
Anyone watching in Wolf Creek/ Pagosa Springs?
So many Texas hats/apparel on the slopes yesterday, I figure one of you guys must be a member
Tailgate
I'll be under the Trolley/Green Line near J1/J2 at about 12.
We've got beer pong and brats for those interested.

wish i could be out there with you guys
If I had known there was going to be such a big BON congregation, I would have tried to make it out. Oh well. Next year. Probably at the Holiday Bowl again.
You stay optimistic bz
Like I said bellow I barely made it out of the office for this thing. Generally speaking its easier if they play on January 1st at least [sigh].
In Austin
I'm sure bars will be somewhat crowded, but some Texas Exes and I will be at The Tavern ... True Longhorns Fans are never too far from 12th and Lamar
Rose Bowl on classic
this afternoon. I think around 3:00 central.
Just thought I'd give a heads up.
I should have called in sick.
Game on internet
If you're stuck in front of a computer tonight, ESPN360.com is showing the game live.
waiting very, very patiently
for the depth chart to be announced.
Could Mack have finally turned the page to try and set a new tone for 2008?
Or will we see the same players march out there again?
I'd like to find out.
From what I heard...
we won't know the starters until kickoff. Mack has stated that even the players won't know who is starting until right before game time. I suspect the Depth Chart on texassports.com won't be updated at all.
by Misterserious7 on Dec 27, 2007 2:48 PM CST up reply actions
I'd assume that..
texassports.com would update the depth chart around kickoff. But I guess it'd be more convenient to just watch the starting lineups introduced on tv haha.

Lots of tickets still available. Wish I was there, because I bet decent seats will go empty. Texas fans are not showing up for this one.
Who can blame them?
Needless to say ASU gets the MO factor in this game.
JC going pro?
I'm listening to Sportsradio 610 AM in Houston and they're interviewing some guy from Orangebloods.
Anyway, his gut feeling is that JC will go, and two important factors in his decision are whether or not Ken Rucker (the running back coach with cancer) comes back, and if JC plays well in the Holiday Bowl.
Apparently, Rucker was like a father figure to JC, so if he has to leave UT because of his cancer, Charles will probably leave too.

Jeff Ketchins (sp?)
was the guy being interviewed.

I've been saying all along
JC = NFL
He wants the paycheck and it has been a rocky ride for him at Texas.
Do I think he is mature enough for the NFL? No
Is it a good career decision? Prolly not
But his older brother ended a career with an injury and JC probably wants to avoid that fate.
Couldn't Agree More
I have no inside info but have a hunch this will be JC's last game as a Longhorn.
Also on JC
at least according to facebook, today is his 21st birthday!
HAPPY BDAY JAMAAL! Hope he has a great game and doesn't party too hard in the night.

Or at least has guys look out..

They dumped a several tons of documents...
...on my desk yesterday morning. I was there till 2 last night and back at 7 this morning but I did manage to make it in time for the game.
Nice of PB to leave a capsule preview for those of us who don't have the time to read his War and Peace-sized epics. Sheesh.
I am disturbingly excited for this game but have to confess that I am most intensely not disposed to tolerate a loss.
Breaking out my 2006 Rose Bowl hat. They haven't lost while I was wearing it yet.
Sorry
I'll stop with the frivalous poststs. FYI I haven't even touched a drop of alcohol yet. Just giddy to get away from work and get home to watch the game.

Usual march down the field for the other team on the opening drive. I'll be shocked if ASU gets more than one 1st down on this first offensive possession.
Great job Dline

Whew. Finally got home.

Special team play
on both sides of ball difference so far.
UT long kick return to start the game.
Quan letting punt roll to the UT 10.
UT 30 yd punt.
GD has mixed it up here
I hope this keeps up even if the game gets tight later. We need to play as if we have nothing to lose. GD needs to take a shot and say what the fuck.
I want GD to be Baldwin's character in GlenGary Glenross. Do you know what it takes to call a game?

21-0 at the end of the 1st
Simply perfect. JC running the best he has ever ran and Colt looks at ease rolling out for big completions.
Mack is fired up (a sideline warning? I love it) and the D looks mean and aggressive.
Freaking perfect.

Let me see....4 times 21.....
Com'on folks ...lets enjoy this performance..
by MeatchickenHorn on Dec 27, 2007 7:58 PM CST reply actions
There's the difference
when the DB hits the AST runner he takes his feet, a safe play, and the guy makes the first down.. If we have a Quentin Jammer, the runner doesn't make the first down.
However, not a complaint, mind, a difference in ability to hit hard, a relatively rare commodity.
But I like the way they're playing, much better. QB under pressure on most every play, a lotta gang tackles, especially hash to sidelines. Just a much quicker reaction to the plays as a unit.
I say more Chiies. Colt can have his fair share, but this has become a more special night. Chiles can really threaten this defense and set up JC. With Chiles, JC goes wild.
Haha
more trash talking, this time Roy Miller. Love it!

I don't know if Horn Brain is at the game...
...but I bet he's thinking the coaches will allow this performance (if it continues - oh please, please, please) to allow them to maintaint the same complacent morass. I dunno. They sure seem to be playing with intensity and they have made the personnel changes. Still, ASU is a second half team and they need to keep the foot (or hoof, as it were) on the pedal).
Also, I am afraid JC might be gone. Still, this is a shitload of fun.
nice replay on the roughing call.

So if this one goes against us, I may just be thinking it's not our night. Half the Texas team was on the field while the play was still going on and a ballboy touches the ball, and ASU STILL doesn't get it back? Ugh.

by cortexas on Dec 27, 2007 8:13 PM CST reply actions
Holy crap....not good.
For the sake of that guy's life that Texas wins this game. If not, he might as well stay in California.
The ball is dead from the point the ball boy
touched it. Can't have the rule otherwise. All penalty from THAT spot, not where they did it. The ball farely went to that spot.
I don't want us to win that, it would have tainted things.
Now we was wronged.
Wow
Pretty sure the refs don't even know how to rule this one
Man WTF is going on?
So 4th down, we can stop them after all.
TD ASU. TIME TO STEP UP for the fucking ball boy.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 27, 2007 8:17 PM CST reply actions
maybe the ball boy
should've run out and tackled the guy before the td. just to make up for it...ya know.
The kid is now infamous.
Hope he has an interesting name.
The flavor of this game just changed. I doubt if the Horns are disheartened. But it a change in MO. And that carries some concern. JCJC
Can someone explain this for me?
OK... so it's a lateral so the ball is live, but then the ball boy allegedly touches it before any of the UT players were able to get, so therefore UT never had possession. Is that correct?
by goingforthecorner on Dec 27, 2007 8:19 PM CST reply actions
The Horns didn't gain possession.
If they had, they have claim. But allegedly they didn't at the point the kid touched it. For the rule the ball was dead, it is dead at that spot. Any personal foul can improve the lie, but from that spot.
I'm not a ref.
Unbelievable
Wow what a break for ASU. He thought it was an incomplete pass thats why he went towards the ball. Lucky bullshit. I don't think he touched it.
by IHN on Dec 27, 2007 8:20 PM CST reply actions
For the new attitude to mean anything..
...they need to be able to overcame what is, truth to tell, a fairly minimal amount of adversity. We still have a 2 TD leas on an inferior team.
This is complete horse shit
There is no way that you can say that there was indisputable video evidence to conclude that he touched the ball. The ball did not alter its course or spin in any way, that is horse shit.
LOL they will hide his identity!
All we'll know is that his name is Chris. Oh well, his name will get leaked out somehow.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 27, 2007 8:21 PM CST reply actions
Fucking stupid
Has there ever been a team as fucking stupid as this one? Apart from that idiot, there were at least five guys out on the field.

The play shift
Every teams does that; the push on the sidelines is to see the play. That's why they have getback coaches.
1LL - The one-legged leader
so forlornly expressed on the sideline, needs to get a little more pressure, a little more beat up. That's part of the contest now; they last as long as he does.
