Rick Barnes Becomes UT's All Time Best

With tonight's 83-54 win over Oklahoma State, Rick Barnes has become the winningest coach in University of Texas basketball history. The win, his 209th, rightly places him at the top of the charts in Longhorn history, surpassing the previous best of 208 wins by Palpatine Tom Penders.

To be perfectly honest, it couldn't have come on a better evening, as this was not only the Longhorns best team effort of the season, but Rick Barnes' finest evening of the year as a coach, as well. From the opening tip, Rick set the tone for the game, opting to make AJ Abrams defend JamesOn Curry and utilizing Damion James beautifully as an offensive weapon off of the screen. Rick also did a tremendous job of using Kevin Durant as a weapon other than a scorer: by taking advantage of what Oklahoma State wanted to do with Durant defensively, Barnes put Augustin in a position to continually break down the Cowboy defense with penetration. Barnes sent Durant down to work double screens that Oklahoma State spent enormous defensive capital on stopping; that, in turn, freed DJ to get to the rim on direct penetration.

This isn't just about tonight, though. It's about Rick Barnes' tremendous record as a coach in Austin. Andrew and I are some seriously obsessed Longhorn hoop fans - something that can lead us to be hyper-critical of every last little move. We don't spend enough time talking about the great shape that this program is in, the wonderful job he's done recruiting elite talent to the 40 Acres, and the outstanding track record he has with putting this team in a position to be relevant each and every March.

Rick hasn't broken through with a national title yet, but he's consistently a part of the conversation. For that alone, we should be grateful.

And even if we have to get back to being the hyper-critical fans that we are tomorrow, let's take tonight to extend our congratulations and a giant thank you to Rick Barnes for making Texas basketball something we can be proud of and excited about each and every year.

Rick Barnes and team
Wow, what an exciting team to watch. Each player had one of their better games and okiestate looked
hopeless from tipoff. The development of the team since the start is top-notch. Barnes is getting everyone to listen and play his game, not theirs!
I think come tournament time Rick will ask Kevin to take over the floor and he looks up to it. If he gets a hot hand look for another elite eight
OT game we just might win. We need a good bracket
and some help but I am rooting for this "fun to watch" team!
Go horns!!
i still can't believe we won!!

We are blessed with great coaches...
... across the board.

We don't have prima donnas or giant egos or scandal at the top spot of any or our programs.  We have arguably the best tandem of coaching staffs of any school in the country, and they attract the right kind of athlete.

Barnes has definetly raised the profile of the program, not only on the national scene, but also on the 40 Acres.  We now expect the same high level of performance that we expect from the football team.  For that alone those of us that are fans of more than just the pigskin should be grateful he's a Longhorn.

prima donna
I used that today as well.
Did you have to look it up?  I did.  I was going to spell it primadonna, as in before madonna.

by Wells on Feb 13, 2007 1:12 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

That would be...
... pre-Madonna.  :-)  I actually didn't have to look it up.  Gay guys get to use words like 'prima donna' and 'diva' in regular conversation.  It's one of the benefits.

I guess the second comment made me come off more snarky (I just looked that up too) than I mean to be.

Coming over to the Dark Side, Wells?
Prima Donna and Snarky in one thread.  I'm impressed!  You'd think you were a rocket scientist or something.

Major props...
to Coach Barnes.  He's an excellent coach, role model, and face of the university.  He's everything you could ask for in a coach, and we're lucky to have him.  And if he continues to make Texas an attractive place to come play hoops, he's going to get that national championship sometime soon.

I'm thinking to honor Barnes and his record setting victory over the Cowboys, we should one-up OSU.  They've got Eddie Sutton's John Hancock scribbled across the floor.  So maybe we should take out the big Longhorn and state of Texas, and instead put a blown up picture of Barnes' mug at midcourt.  Tip-off would take place on his nose.

Skeletor Rules!
Barnes has taken our hoops program to the next level. I mean look at our practice facility, look at the FEC renovation, look at the caliber of players that are on the floor. We lost 3 underclassmen last year! That just doesn't happen at Texas.

I think there is a championship in sight for this team within the next 6 years. Considering how hard it is to make it through the tourney, I don't think that is too long to wait.

I would argue that TJ helped some as well, but Barnes is respobsible for seeing the development of the program through.

Congrats to Barnes, and let's hope to laugh at Tommy P for how far out of first he is one day. Also b/c he is Tommy P.

Skeletor?
The hubby and I always refer to him as "Putin," for his resemblence to the Russian president.

High cheek bones, sunken eyes, firey temper
Though Skeletor is pretty much all skull.

I see where you are coming from on Putin.

Rick Barnes
Like many, I have emotionally trivalized Rick Barnes in the heat of a frustrating moment.
In other words, I've cussed him.  Upon onset of
logic, I recognize both his contributions and the value he brings to my entertainment stage.

Finally agreed with Coach Knight..."a great coach."

In a dream state I have dared test the limits of what might have been.  I suggest Rick was one
player shy of last year's final four (CJ Miles)
and is same this year (PJ Tucker).

by lutherpard on Feb 13, 2007 1:25 PM CST   0 recs

And just imagine...
... how much better CJ Miles WOULD have been had he chosen to come play at Texas last year, and gotten the experience of playing in the Final Four.  He has completely disappeard off the map in the NBA this season.  Is he on a NBDL roster somewhere?  I can't find him.

I've seen his name couple times in the Jazz
box score in Austin paper.....

PJ got called back to Toronto last week....
from Denver in development league.

Barnes
Congratulations go out to him of course.  It was a great night for him and the team.

And is it just me or in that picture, does it look like Mike Tyson took some liberties with Rick's left ear?

Coach Barnes' Wikipedia article
Good to see that the folks in College Station still have plenty of time on their hands.  Here is an excerpt from the article pertaining to the latest game against aTm:

"In 2007, Barnes set the record for the most whining in the history of college basketball. He actually whined about the refs before the Texas A&M game even started. Then after the game he complained that the mean Aggie fans yelled too loud and his team wasn't use to it since they play in an arena that's not even as loud as Baylor's arena. However, this record will not last long, as Barnes will most likely break it again the next time the Aggies come to town."

Barnes vs. other coaches
I'd like to see the numbers against very good coaches:

I know that we haven't lost to OSU that much, even when they've been good.  We beat them twice when we were a PJ-less, Lemarcus-less team that didn't get past the first round of the playoffs. We've beaten Tech almost every time (every time?). Duke has owned Texas in both matchups, though, even last year when we were stacked. It seems very up and down. Overall though, Barnes has taken our program to another level. Whoever says "fire Barnes" is a complete idiot. Just think about how much worse we would be if we had chosen Rick Majeras instead!

by sonnyalvaradorules on Feb 13, 2007 8:39 PM CST   0 recs

however....
if we had hired majerus, we would be playing more walk-ons.  or we would at least be more effusive about it when we did.
