Season Ending Game Notes
We've got the big picture stuff covered below, but before we put this season to bed, let's take a look at the game notes from the USC debacle - at the very least to touch on all the things Texas -has- to improve upon next season.
- In my game preview, I wrote:
"The Trojans are a team capable of muscling around DJ Augustin. The Longhorns struggle on offense when Augustin's driving into the lane against teams that are built to stop that. USC is one such team, which means the flow of the offense needs to run through Durant. If USC decides they want to double and triple team him, Kevin's gotten better and better at finding open teammates. Even if USC goes balls to the wall on stopping Durant, we need things to go through him."
Unfortunately, Rick Barnes and DJ Augustin didn't get this memo, and the phenomenal freshman point guard had an abomination of a basketball game. Augustin finished just 1-for-8 from the field, with five turnovers, while doing a poor job of helping his team get good half court looks.
Augustin was so good, so often, this season, that it was easy to overlook the games in which he struggled, but they always came against similar teams - ones that defended him physically and denied his driving lanes. I hate to do it, but I urge you to look back at the February 1st Texas Basketball Report, when I wrote: "Smart teams will start spending more of their defensive capital on taking Augustin out of his game. Durant's going to get his points and rebounds - there's no doubting that - but to the extent that opponents can keep Augustin from being effective with his penetration, they can slow down Texas' potent offense."
Tim Floyd is a smart coach, and they did exactly that tonight. Rick Barnes and DJ Augustin have to spend the offseason working on ways to run the half court offense against teams that won't let him get to the hole at will.
- The other big problem in the half court today was the secondary guards' inability to complete (or even attempt) a post pass into Durant. If you want to complain about Rick Barnes, by all means, I urge you to bump this to the top of your list. Rick Barnes' guards have never been able to complete a pass into the post. Unfortunately, on a night like tonight when we really needed to have the ball in Durant's hands eight feet from the basket, this was a decisive weakness. Time after time after time, AJ Abrams and Justin Mason would reverse the ball along the perimeter without so much as a pump fake Durant's way. Any way you cut it, that's bad coaching. They're underclassmen, but they're not Special Olympians. Teaching these kids to throw a post entry pass should be among Rick Barnes' coaching skills. It is not.
- I understand that Rick was trying to mix things up because nothing was working, and though the idea was the right one (get away from the status quo), the chosen solution - playing JD Lewis for 20 minutes - was like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. It's not like there wasn't a mountain of evidence that suggested Lewis is a major liability on the court. For the season, Lewis was 11-41 from three point range on the year. That's 27%. If you're wondering, the much-maligned Connor Atchley shoots 30%. So, Lewis, presumably in there as a "shooting specialist," can't shoot the three point shot as well as a guy who makes everyone gasp with nervous anticipation anytime he puts up a shot. Did I mention that Lewis is also a non-entity on rebounding and a liability on defense? Craig Winder isn't much of an option either, but at least he's an athlete. Lewis is just dead weight.
- I feel badly for Justin Mason, because his offensive performance just fell off a cliff sometime in January, and never recovered. Somehow, he went cold, and Texas got reduced too often to a two-man show on offense. Damion James has his moments, but we really needed Mason to be a credible perimeter threat. I have no complaints about Mason's overall performance this year - I'm just noting how much it hurt us that he went cold.
- Kudos to Kevin for having another outstanding game in what might be his last for the burnt orange and white. He never got in that elite KD rhythm that we've seen at times, but even on a tough night, he had a magnificent performance. If it's his last one for Texas, let us all take a moment to thank him for the memories.
- Last, we just have to give Tim Floyd and USC a big bag of credit. I said before the game that their length on the perimeter made me nervous, but they were more than just athletic and rangy - they had a great game plan. They executed it well, hit their shots, played with composure, and more or less dominated the Longhorns. As much as we did wrong, they did right. And a lot of the things that we did wrong were because of things they did right. I've noted my allegiance to Rick Barnes as director of this program, but he got licked by Tim Floyd tonight. They were better prepared, and we didn't make the right adjustments. A tip of the cap to USC.

Great post, but...
I'll try to keep it short on why no one should feel angry or shocked about us getting "upset". Whether it's college or NBA, the game is all about matchups, and they definitely had the advantage.
USC had the size advantage at almost every position. They had more experienced upperclassmen. Even one of their fishies, Taj Gibson is 21 years old. They are way better defensively than us, but at the same time, they can still score to keep up with a team that gets hot. This was a terrible matchup for us. If you look at the other 5 seeds, we probably had a better chance at beating Virginia Tech or Tennessee than USC or Butler.
It's easy to say Floyd out-coached Barnes, but Floyd had way more bullets in his gun. This was almost a two-man show for us (KD and Abrams). Augustin was terrible. Mason just fell off the planet. James was ineffective. None of the three whities contributed. In retrospect, I'm not surprised at all at the outcome.
Fans with reasonable expectations of the team would think that just getting to the Sweet 16 would be an unbelievable accomplishment for a team so young, undersized, and outnumbered. We were one round short. The "pod seeding" did not help us this year like it was supposed to. USC was a bad matchup. There's no shame in coming up a round short. It could've been a lot worse. Look what happened to UConn this year...

Again...
The greatness that is Kevin Durant found a way to hide all these flaws temporarily (and actually persuade people to have us go far in their brackets), and we somehow managed to win 20 games, play 2 close games with KU, beat A&M (a MUCH better team), be involved in so many "instant classic" games, get to the Big XII tournament finals, qualify for the NCAA tournament, and actually advance past the first round.
KD deserves nothing but props. Rick Barnes deserves nothing but props.
Here's another slight moral victory... Texas, UConn, Duke were the only 3 teams to get to the Sweet 16 in 4 of the last 5 years. None of the teams got there this year. We went the farthest this year of those three.

And in case you needed a reminder...

all those points hold pre season bearing
or beat people on any night no matter who they were
just wasnt a good game yesterday
but it's ok
things happen
I had a bad feeling about this game
Something about USC's size and their energy level in previous games.
This just proves the NCAA is all about matchups. As much as I can't stand Tim Floyd, he really worked over Texas in the first half. The second half was just a loss of composure by Texas.
I look forward to seeing Hill, Dex, Atchley, et al take the next step in 08. Each has potential, but just needs more confidence.
Lets all pray the Turkish kid makes it, because they badly need another player who can handle the ball. DJ can't be expected to go 100% for the entire game -- and AJ makes me cringe when he dribbles.
Also add
I'm actually very surprised he never attempted a "big" lineup and bringing AJ off the bench. It seemed like an obvious and necessary choice.
It's only disappointing
But man what a season! Lots of close games, nail biters, I got light headed at the end of a couple of them.
This group tried hard to play better than they were. The team had a huge range of talent, from one of the best ever, to some you wonder how they got onto the court. They had games like the 1st half in the first KU game everything went right and every shot went in and even the best couldn't stop them.
Like every team except one in the country they fell short. Some teams like USC they couldn't match up against, our weaknesses were their strengths and USC was well prepared to take advantage. A team has to have more talent at more positions to overcome that. The Horns were short across the board all season.
At the end of last season I had no reason to believe this one would be such a great one, who did? When the future looked bleak, these kids stood up and took the challenge.
That is less hard if your a Kevin Durant and already know your gifted but the guts it takes a JD Lewis or Connor Atchely who have no reason to believe they are going to do anything but stink and suffer humiliation at the hands of thousands of fans. They take that gamble with only the slimmest chance at praise, they go out knowing we all sit back and watch with an unforgiving and critical eye that can be so harsh we make their mothers cry. It's not so much a surprise that they get up and try their hardest, but that they take the challenge at all with so little chance of getting much respect.
As much as I would like to think all that should be good enough, God Bless Rick Barnes if he can bring in more talent for next season. That's what we all hope for.
OK, OK...
Also, this team was NOT AT ALL prepared for this game. Of all games that you probably want to get your team prepared for, the Big Dance is probably one of them. For that, I blame Barnes.
And lastly, we made Tim Floyd look smart. If there's not another reason to be insanely embarrassed, then look no further than that.
Trust me - all season long, I have defended Rick Barnes as a coach. But I really think he failed out there yesterday, and I'm very disappointed in him for that. I know, I know - much is being made (NOW) of the fact that we start 4 frosh and a sophmore - I don't give a shit; there's not a more talented starting 5 in the nation, so age - to me - is not a factor. We still finished 3rd in the Big XII - with a shot to win it all - and nearly won the Big XII tourney as well. That was with those same 4 frosh and a sophmore.
And no one is going to tell me that USC is a more talented team than A&M or Kansas, are they? And we split the series with the former and went to the wire twice with the latter! Why wouldn't we be able to run with a run-of-the-mill Pac 10 team? Coaching.
I sincerely blame Barnes for this loss, let's say 90% of it, and I refuse to back away from that. He really disappointed out there yesterday, and I think he deserves that blame. I don't want to hear any more about our inexperience - these kids grew up a lot over the season, and USC was not the team that was supposed to take us out. UNC I could live with; Georgetown, sure; but not USC. And I'm not dissing USC here - they're an alright team, but that was not the better team out there yesterday - but it was the better coached team. God that hurts to say that of a Tim Floyd coached team.
So put credit where credit is due - Barnes. He did an amazing job throughout the season, and really blew it yesterday.

Not a more talented starting 5 in the nation?
A fair assessment
You can't get 'em all, but I cry to think of all the rebounds that were in the hands of a Texas player and either fumbled or taken away. All the times our opponents got not just one, but two or three offensive rebounds. We saw this again and again in the USC game.
a lot of this had to do with effort
our lack of depth really showed, and the fact that we were only getting solid contributions offensively from two players, allowing USC to direct their defensive focus on those two players, really hurt. it would have been a great game for Mason or James to pick up some slack.
very frustrating to watch. sucks even more that i was dealing with the worst hangover i've had in some time. how brutal is it to have St. Patty's day on a Saturday, the same weekend as the opening round of the tournament?

Question
I had the same problem
Then I get to a t.v/on-line and watched the entire second half. I wish I had not. Watching that game was torture. Not since the Gonzaga game has Texas looked so ragged and out of sync. They looked so helpless out there and Barnes refused to call time-outs when things got ugly.
Weird how everytime I'm cut off from watching the Horns they lose. K-state in football I got an update on my cell phone while using the bathroom at a wedding reception -- and let out a yell that probably made a few guys at the urinal pee on themselves.
I had also paid for ESPN's service to rewatch the game when I got home. For some reason I can't look away from the train wrecks, because I watched/rewatched the next day. sigh......
So you are saying not to
Yes
Cell phone updates can be good and bad. Life saving, but a terrible tease.
I wouldnt watch if I were you.
