Top 40 Longhorns Of All Time: 1970-1979

I'm once again heading to an all day "staff retreat," so posting beyond this list will be cut off until I get home. A couple of housekeeping notes before we get started:

For one, check the note in the Morning Coffee about this list. All this commentary from each of you, especially those who are commenting on each and every decade thread, is invaluable. Many, many thanks.

Second, as we move out of the recent past into discussion of Longhorn players and teams that many of us never saw play, some background information is instructive. Instead of just listing players' names and All American years, I'll be including the position played, as well as the relevant statistical information to help guide your evaluations.

-Players listed in alphabetical order.
-An asterisk indicates consensus first team All American.

1975 Marty Akins, QB (Led the '75 Longhorns in total offense with 1,240 yards. Never threw more than four TDs in one season, but is third on all time list with 26 wins as a starter.)
1970* Bill Atessis, DE (Sacks and tackles for loss were not official stats until 1975, which makes evaluating Atessis from a statistical standpoint near impossible. Here's what you need to know, though: Atessis was a member of the 30-game winning streak teams from 1969-1970 and was voted Defensive MVP of the team by the Dallas Morning News in both 1969 and 1970.)
1975, 1977* Earl Campbell, RB (You don't really need an intro here, do you?)
1976 Raymond Clayborn , DB (Led the 'Horns in passes defended in both 1975 and '76. Prolific return man as well, known for breaking long runs. Named to All-SWC team of the 1970s.)
1976, 1977, 1978, Russell Erxleben, P/PK (Fifth on all time career FGs made at Texas with 49. Made a ridiculous eleven field goals of 50 yards or more, including three of 60+, with a high of 67 yards. Also holds career records at Texas for punt average in a season (46.6) and career punting average (44.2))
1970 Happy Feller, PK (Two career field goals over 50 yards, but isn't a real Top 40 candidate.)
1970 Scott Henderson, LB (Will be included in the discussion of the 1960s players. He's Top 40 material. Captain of 1970 team, three-time first team All American. All around badass.)
1978*, 1979* Johnnie Johnson, DB (Led Longhorns in interceptions in 1978 with five. Fifth most interceptions in school history. Over 1,000 return yards. Named to All SWC Team of the 1970s.)
1978, 1979 Johnny "Lam" Jones, WR (Team MVP in 1978, Jones scored eight touchdowns of 45 yards or longer. If performance in track and field counted, he'd be a lock.)
1973* Roosevelt Leaks, RB (First African American Longhorn to earn All American and All Conference honors, Leaks finished third in the Heisman voting in 1973. A knee injury hampered his senior year production, but there's no question he'll be among the Top 40 Longhorns of all time. Inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005.)
1978, 1979* Steve McMichael, DT (Team MVP in 1979, McMichael anchored the Longhorn defense with 18 tackles for loss and 142 tackles in 1978, both team highs. His 7.5 sacks in 1979 also led the team.)
1977 Brad Shearer, DT (The team's co-captain in 1977 won the Outland Trophy as the nation's top interior lineman and was named as a member of the All SWC team for the 1970s. Averaged 10 tackles per game and led the team to a #1 ranking in 1977.)
1974, 1975* Bob Simmons, OT (Three time all-conference player helped lead Texas to two conference titles.)
1971*, 1972* Jerry Sisemore, OT (Led Texas to three SWC titles and was named to the SWC and Cotton Bowl teams of the decade.)
1973* Bill Wyman, C (Not much available data on Wyman. Which means no Top 40, unless someone knows something I don't.)

NOTE: Cotton Speyrer, Steve Worster, and Bub Wuensch will all be discussed in the next decade thread.

Have at it, boys and girls. Your comments on the Longhorns of the 1970s?

Russell Erxleben

shares the record for longest field goal in ncaa history. He is also the highest kicker ever drafted (11th).

fairly pointless note...

My mom went on a blind date with Happy Feller in '69 while she was at UT, so my friends always joke that I could have been Happy Jr.  I'm not sure I would be the well-adjusted man I am today if my father's name was Happy Feller.

PB stole my thunder damn it....

Very good years for the Longhorns (70's)

There is no doubt in my mind that the 2000-2009 will equal or surpass the 70's.

BZ, notice the 80's.........

I think

I think I went to every longhorns home game in the 70s (I managed to be at UT for 9 of the 10 years out of the decade -- not ALL undergraduate).  I had forgotten how spoiled we got, but I sure remember all these guys.  Sizemore and Campbell lead the list, but virtually the whole list deserves serious consideration (except for Feller, who was good but not great, and Akins, who for some reason never inspired my confidence). Campbell is the single UT player that I always, every down, absolutely believed could get the yardage the team needed.  Hasn't been one since.  Until VY.

Seismore

should get a good long look as well - two time consensus all american, college & NFL hall of fame inductee, starter for the '70 NC team, selected 3rd overall in the NFL draft.  That is all in addition to the stuff that Peter listed.

I don't think that individual statistics were kept for 0-line guys during this time.  That is a shame.  Seismore's numbers would probably have compared favorably to those of Orlando Pace.

by Brandon 97 on Mar 29, 2007 9:27 AM CDT   0 recs

Sisemore is a lock for top 40

Remember, this was the Wishbone Offense, 300-450 yards a game rushing, you needed an O-Line..........

All American Offensive Tackle 1971,1972
All SWC Offensive Tackle 1971,1972
1970 Starting Offensive Tackle Nat'l Champs

Thanks Brandon97, I forgot 3rd overall pick in the draft......

If not for Vince and Earl

Seismore would be in the running for my #1 Longhorn of all time. Great football player. Definitely up there for top lineman of all time, offense or defense.

2 cents

Great recap.  Unfortunately, my knowledge on these guys is rather limited, but from what I've seen/heard/read, I would definitely include:

Scott Henderson - Defensive Playmaker
Johnny "Lam" Jones - what a freak on a rushing dominant team (2 to 1 ratio, rush yds to pass yds)
Roosevelt "Leaks All Over the Field"
Steve McMichael - Beast Defined
Jerry Sisemore - Immovable Anchor on OL
Oh, and that Tyler Rose guy - Number 1 of 40?

Also heard very solid things on Brad Shearer and Bob Simmons.  Russell Erxleben should probably be a strong consideration.

Side note

Why is it that whenever you talk about O-Linemen, you must preace the coversation with how much the offense ran the ball?  Does running the ball require better lineman than passing the ball?  Is "Pass-blocking" not just as important a skill as "Run-Blocking".

Are the Houston Texans o-lineman awesome because our running back was a 1,000 yard rusher 5 seasons in a row, nevermind the fact that David Carr broke the record for number of sacks in that same 5 year period?

Anyone?  I never played footbal, so I am genuinely asking.

I played Corner/Safety...........

People will get pissed at me but I felt our Run Blocking skills  were pretty poor last year.

Is that because nobody could figure out where VY was going the year before and the blocking scheme suffered.

Not a OL freak myself, but it's been a lot of  years since I've seen a great run block UT OL.

Maybe when Ricky was here.

by ouALWAYSsux on Mar 29, 2007 11:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think most will agree

Is is that the Zone Read offense is really not that good of a rushing offense without a VY type to confuse the defense?  Or that our O-line, while great at pass blocking, just were not that good a run blocking?  Either way, when we were in obvious running situations, like our red zone offense, we had problems with the running game and creating holes.

Pass blocking requires more finesse and skill, where as run blocking is more about explosiveness and Power.  Maybe we had too much of one, sacrificing the other?

Most will agree with oAs

Not my ramblings afterward.

by Wells on Mar 29, 2007 12:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No draws

The pass blocking lends itself well to draws, but we didn't really run any halfback draws.

by Bob LaBlog on Mar 29, 2007 12:11 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think we have replaced the draw

with the hated shovel pass screen.

by Wells on Mar 29, 2007 12:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Texas has had run blocking problems

for several years now. VY was just able to compensate. I didn't start to notice the problem until very early on last season (and I posted something about it) -- and even then, it took the OSU game for me to accept the flaw in what I thought was an asset. I had been buying the hype on the Texas running game until then.

It shouldn't require an all-planet track star QB or smoke'n mirros gimmicks like Lokey as FB to punch the ball in.

Who knows what the story is. Maybe it's scheme, maybe it's technique, or maybe the talent has been vastly overrated.

The O-line has had issues ever since the year Chance took them to the Holiday Bowl against Wash St. Something happened before that season and hasn't really been fixed.

Wells, Couldn't agree with you more.

Zone Read offense Should be named  the "Vince Young" offense.

We definatly sacrificed our OL.....
Why, because we were playing VY style offense last year without VY. GD didn't adjust his game plan to Colt's strengths.

Remember, Mack had a problem with VY. Mack decided to hell with it, "Vince, what kind of offense you want?" The rest is his-stor-eeee.........

We need to adjust to our strengths with the players we have now.

again, good points Wells.......

Maybe its play-calling?

cough - Greg Davis - cough!

by SwimTexas on Mar 29, 2007 12:46 PM CDT   0 recs

Oh Lord

Do not go there! I mean, he did lead the Texas offense to its most productive season ever by carefully and patiently instructing (and I do mean instructing, there were charts and Powerpoints and everything) Vince Young to do whatever the hell he wanted to. And thank goodness for that, because I think we all know that Vince was really just a product of Greg Davis' system. We've all seen how he's floundering in the NFL. And don't blame last year's relative offensive let-down on GD, Colt McCoy and the offense simply weren't ready to implement his master strategies designed around VY's limitations. You simply can't expect a man of GD's genius to adapt himself to the players on the team.

So, for once and for all, lay off of Greg Davis. The talent Texas brings in simply can't win any more than they already do year to year.

So take that.

by ouALWAYSsux on Mar 29, 2007 3:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Too easy an answer

When you take the approach that GD can do nothing right and that he is the cause of all of life's problems you oversimplify the problem to an absurd level.

Let's take Kahuna's sarcastic response.  He give GD no credit for the offense of 2005, giving that completely to VY.  But then he blames GD completely for the offensive let down of 2006 (which is much less than he is implicating, but this is how he can blame GD for the losses last year and not the defense) when the team lost VY, the only reason, according to Kahuna, that that offense was any good.

I am not saying that GD is a great coach and should be honored above all else, but when you lose objectivity, you lose the ability rationally look at the problems.

by Wells on Mar 29, 2007 3:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I am excessive

But, at this point, it's more to be a troll than anything else. For that, I apologize.

It's true Greg Davis deserves credit for a lot that goes right with our offense, and let's be honest, Texas' offense has been really, really good for a while now.

That said, I would just like someone (be it GD or someone else) to apply a little creative problem solving to the woes the offense does have, i.e. struggles running the ball in crucial situations. And by creative problem solving, I don't mean "shovel pass" or "bubble screen". I mean, try new (old) formations that highlight the skills of your personnel, as he did so wonderfully with VY (and I'm not being sarcastic there).

Anyway, I'm not being creative in my whining, so I'll stop.

So take that.

by Kahuna on Mar 29, 2007 3:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not a problem

You don't need to apologize, I think you are expressing the frustration of many of the BONers, and you were joking.
I am all for GD changing his ways, and I think this year will be a good measure of his ability to do so.  Saturday will be our fist look at that.

Sorry, but another OL comment.

aTm game.
opening drive.
4th and 1.
OL made the hole, the running back chose to take it outside.
The running back is now on Defense.........

To all over 40

Notice how Peter felt the need to start adding descriptions to the players from this decade? You made me feel old, PB.

I began following the Longhorns in '69 when I was in kindergarten (loved the road uniforms). Been a fan ever since. The decade of the '70s in Texas football will always be special to me, particularly the great games between DKR and his good friend Coach Bryant. I had a lot of bragging rights around here in those days - Bama's never beaten the 'Horns.

by beast in bama on Mar 29, 2007 2:39 PM CDT   0 recs

I mentions the Descrip. earlier.

I like it though.........
gives some of the younger guys an idea of what the longhorns were like when we were their age.

I was 20 in 1973...........

I'll need some help myself when we get to the 50's.....

Side Note..

Today is Earl Campbell's birthday.

by FBuck on Mar 29, 2007 10:08 PM CDT   0 recs

ah... the 70s...

...chaining my bike to the stadium gate, standing on the seat and hopping over without a ticket...Campbell was awesome with his tear-away jerseys.  Few remember he also blocked a couple of kicks as well. Lam Jones had an olympic gold medal before ever stepping onto the 40 acres. Erxleben, Little, and that puke from aggieland trying to outkick each other every week; never to be rivaled nowdays without a tee and the ball brought back to scrimage line after a miss.  I remember Marty Akins as the last wishbone QB.  I also remember he was a jerk, but I forget why I thought so.  Dallas County jail on OU eve...those were the days.

Did you get out of Jail

my friends were waiting on the steps for me.  It happened so fast I didn't think they'd seen my arrest.

where's the db love?

both Johnson and Clayborn really deserve a hard look here...

I think the cut down to 40 will probably leave out Johnson, which I hate because he made my all-time favorite defensive play - stopping OU's Thomas Lott cold on 4th down inside the 10.

But Clayborn should probably end up on the list somewhere.  He was truly a great player, just made tons of huge plays in his Texas career.
