Morning Coffee
Today is Easter Monday, a holiday not widely celebrated in the United States. In fact, I had to Wiki it to learn about the associated traditions. One Polish Easter Monday tradition caught my attention:
If you've been following this BON diary, then you'll get this metaphor: today we Longhorn basketball fans are Polish girls. And the NBA's riches are a giant log. Like I said: brace yourselves.
(It's not hard to figure out what's coming today, but I'm restricted from further commentary until after a story has been filed later today. After that, I'll be free to give you some interesting tidbits from several phone calls I made Sunday afternoon.)
Speaking of inappropriate leg-whippings, Colin Cowherd is back in the news. ESPN's newest Ombudsman, Le Anne Schreiber, used her first official feedback response column to address the "dozens" of complaints she received from letter writers over Cowherd's latest on-air malfeasance. I'd have more to say on this if Kyle hadn't just said what I intended to. The Mayor's good like that.
Kyle Russell hit two home runs during Saturday's series finale with Kansas to tie the Texas single season record (Jeff Ontiveros, 2002). Kyle's 19th and 20th dingers of the year helped Texas (28-10, 9-3) win 6-5 on Saturday afternoon. Full Texas Baseball Report on the site later today.
Brad Buckman and Kris Clack are now on the Houston Rockets! Not! (Sorry, I just watched Borat for the first time this weekend. I don't have much to say about the film, other than watching it this long after it came out, after hearing so much hype, sort of made it hard to appreciate.)
I was talking to Deadspin editor Will Leitch during Orson and I's online radio show last Tuesday and Will said something which resonated with me: his least favorite athletes are guys like Derek Jeter, who give you canned, boring responses that keep them out of the news. I found Will's sentiments - which I agree with - especially relevant on Friday afternoon when Dan Patrick interviewed Ricky Williams during his ESPN Radio show and Williams talked about how he's been spending his offseason. Williams was candid, but more importantly, he was deeply insightful and impressively self-aware. If you have a few minutes, go to the ESPN Podcast Center and listen to the segment. For all Ricky's shortcomings, he remains one of my favorite athletes of all time - both for his accomplishments and his personality.
Unless you were watching softball on Saturday night, you missed one of BON's all time favorites - Cat Osterman - making her professional debut as a sportscaster for ESPN. Cat called the Arizona-Arizona State game, a gig which she'll perform semi-regularly for the network. My Cat source tells me they don't yet know which games Cat will be calling, but that she'll be behind the microphone for several more (non-Texas) games this season.
Last, but not least, the coldest April weather in Austin in 20 years may have kept me away from the Texas Relays, but it didn't shut down the event itself. One of Austin's great sports events each year, it's too bad that the weather wasn't as cooperative as we've come to expect, but I'm happy to know the meets went on as planned.

I hate you Peter Bean!
God, I hope the Celtics don't get him. Bill Simmons can kiss my ass!
What I really hope is that KD pulls a Steve Francis and demands a trade to Houston. Too bad KD is too humble and unselfish... not to mention that Boston is close enough to Maryland.

Borat
I agree "Borat" wasn't that funny unless you are anti-semitic. The best parts were actually the deleted scenes, especially the one with Borat at the plastic surgeon's, wanting to be made more attractive to women.

I agree almost
Borat was terrible. 90 minutes of my time I'll never get back. However, the funniest moment of the movie came during the "running of the Jew." That was hysterical. Too bad that was the only instance.
But the movie wasn't anti-semitic. It was making fun of prejudice. (I can't believe I just defended Borat).
No Masters update, PB? You're not that kind of Tiger fan are you?

Two things
- The running of the Jew was hysterical. Ditto the stay at the bed and breakfast. The rest of the movie was rather boring.
- No, I'm not that kind of Tiger fan. I just barely got to watch the Masters this year. Timing didn't work out - a bunch of work plopped on my lap Sunday morning, and I couldn't afford not to use the free day to take care of it. I saw very little of Sunday's action.

How can
a short fat naked man wrestling with a tall lanky naked man and then running through a conference not be hysterical?
Borat was good, but I think it is something that needs to be seen in a theater. The comedy will get repetitive if you don't have an entire theater laughing with you to keep it going.
I saw it in Chinatown in DC. When he gets on the mobile home with the racist rednecks, it got a bit awkward in the theater.

wow, couldn't disagree more
I thought Borat was great. I was already a fan of the show and the movie was even better. Sacha Baron Cohen gave an Andy Kaufman-like performance, always staying in character, even when he was being questioned by cops or close to getting beat up. Boring? Wow. Him singing a fake national anthem at a rodeo, putting poop in a bag at a fancy dinner, getting saved at an evangelical church, partying with racist fratboys. I thought it was all awesome.
I will agree that the atmosphere makes a huge difference. I saw it at the Drafthouse, and everyone was laughing their asses off the whole time.

I agree
Atmosphere makes a big difference. I liked it. There were parts that were over the top, but as a whole I was surprised that it was more than what I saw on the ads.

College Baseball Stats
Well it was a fun year watching Durant...
So Kyle Russell is going to shatter the single season Texas HR record, but what is the College record? Does anyone know any good sites on College Baseball? I can't find stats or records anywhere other than the TexasSports.

I looked it up last week
And it's out of reach - Pete Incaviglia hit 47 dingers for Oklahoma State in 1987

If Durant does declare
I'll be curious to hear his reasons for leaving.
Anyone have any guesses outside of the obvious? Did Rick flirting with Kentucky do anything?

OU scrimmage
Did anyone catch that on ESPN?
Knee jerk summary:
Offense
OU's running game will be the best in the conference. DeMarco Murray is scary good.
Their O-line is physical, but doesn't pass block well.
Bradford is the starter and it isn't even close, not by a mile. Nichols is probably the back-up and he will be a stud in two years (not good news).
The entire offense is out of sync and sloppy.
I think they will focus on running the ball. Again. Bradford throws a good ball, but they float on him. He likes to throw high for some reason, despite a good arm.
Defense
OU's defense has taken a small step back to 05 form. The front line is still pretty awesome, but the LBs are WIP. The DB's are still working out assignment kinks for such a hyped unit. Someone needs to explain to me what exactly DJ Wolfe does to have his name in every other sentence by Bob Davie. The defense seems to lack the intensity they used to have.
The team was incredibly sloppy and lethargic, which has been their problem the last two years (at times).
They'll be good, but start slow like last year.

Ricky and Borat
That interview with Ricky just gave me a whole new respect for the guy. Too bad the NFL is scared of people who are self-aware and and tell it like it is. You can take insane amounts of prescription drugs and steroids, but smoking a doobie to relax is completely taboo.

Texas Relays
Hey, Texas Ex and former steeplechase runner Mark Floreani and myself taped and provided commentary for just about every race at the Texas Relays, that includes Saturday. Check out Mark's site at www.flotrack.com.
