Clemens back with the Yankees
Just saw this a couple minutes ago. There's so much that went into this decision it could take a while to get through it all, but you have to think Astro's front office has a lot to do with this. First losing Andy, which probably affected Roger's decision, now this. We all know about the Texan's management debacles, and now the Rockets seem to be in a pit as well. Are Houston teams just cursed with poor management?

money?
I think money had a little to do with it, if i heard right he is getting 28 million, thats so much for just a little over half a year
Houston...
Why would Clemens go to the Astros? Their window has more than closed--at age 45, it would be a waste of time to go pitch for a team that might not even with 75 games.
Astros Suck
The astros are a joke and i am a huge stros fan but this is a team with too many holes everywhere and they are not a contender. Any astros fan that is upset about clemens not coming back does not see the situation clearly. Clemens plays for The Rockets not The Yankees, Astros or Bo Sox. Clemens is all about clemens and thats that.
He was always an ego driven asshole but when he got to New York the first time around those traits were hidden and he was seen as a good guy. Most people don't remember how clemens was with the Red Sox. He was a batter hitting punk. He doesn't care about the Yankees all he cares about is pitching on the biggest stage in baseball. Enron field does not provide and clemens also hopes that this will help him go into the hall as a Yankee but it won't happen Rocket.
Good riddance to this egotistical maniac. Hopefully my Bo Sox will rough his ass up.

what
a terrible post.
"i am a huge stros fan"
is that why your title is Astros Suck?
"too many holes"
like what? going into the season, everyone was worried about the rotation. so far, the Astros starters have thrown more quality starts than any other team in baseball. the problem in this early season has been offense. do you expect Berkman's bat to stay as cold as it has been?
"Clemens plays for The Rockets"
huh?
"Clemens is all about Clemens and thats that"
i agree.
"Enron field"
doesn't exist.
You don't get it do you
I am being sarcastic and the Astros do suck right now. You can not be realistic about your baseball team.
I was being sarcastic with "The Rockets" quote. I should have said team rocket and i was trying to be funny with Enron Field.
by txlonghorn34 on May 7, 2007 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions
no I don't get it
Where was the sarcasm? That you're a huge Astros fan?
I agree the Astros are struggling right now. Their pitching has been excellent, and I expect the offense to improve. I'm hoping the Brewers come back to earth, and I think the Astros have an excellent chance to win the central.
"You can not be realistic about your baseball team."
What the hell does this sentence mean?
I guess I've just got a crappy sense of humor, but I really have no idea why calling MMP Enron field is funny.
agreed.
sans Ensberg and Lane hopefully.

Wow
If you don't think the astros are a bad team right now then you are one big time homer. The holes in this team are to many. We have four automatic outs in the lineup including the pithcer. Brad Ausmus, Adam Everett, Morgan Ensberg and the pithcer. Good baseball teams don't have that many holes in their lineup.
Our starting pitching is okay. It is not good enough to carrie a team to championship and don't even let me get started on that pathetic excuse of a bullpen it just is not a good team. I am being realistic about the astros and they will contend for the postseason because the division is the worst in baseball but they won't make it. They are just many problems on this team.
The bright spot of the season will be Mr. 3000 Craig Biggio.
Forget the first sarcastic quoute on my reply. I just made an error. You do not find any humor in calling it Enron Field. I still acutally call Enron Field. It just sounds better to me.
by txlonghorn34 on May 7, 2007 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions
no offence, dude,...
but you don't know the Astros.
Ensberg's problem is not hitting for power. He's definitely not an automatic out, as the guy walks like crazy.
Ausmus is batting over .300. I don't expect that to last, but he isn't there for his bat anyway.
Why bitch about the 7,8, and 9 hitters? If the other guys are doing their jobs, it doesn't matter how the bottom third of the order bats. They are defensive players. Is that confusing?
The starting pitching has been WAY better than OK. They've been excellent.
The bullpen is good. Do you get your info from Sportscenter or Baseball Tonight? Not a great idea if you want people to take you seriously.
Name the problems. I'm sure you'll spout the same nonsense we heard in 2005. Remember the result that year?
The highlight of the season is Biggio hitting 3k? I love what Biggio has meant to the team, but once he stops producing in the lineup (second half), I hope he's on the bench.
Do you really follow the team?
What about 2006
This team does have holes and i'm not a diehard astros fan. I know if they win or lose every night but i don't watch every game. This team is not good and there are huge problems. Adam Everett and Ausmus maybe defensive players but they become problems when no one else is hitting, which is happening right now.
This team has the same offensive problems as the last two years. They are not a good baseball team and thats that. Last time i checked Morgan Ensberg is not considered a premier third baseman.
by txlonghorn34 on May 7, 2007 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions
you're
hardly worth replying to.
Yes. They have the same offensive problems they had two years ago. When they won the pennant. Last year they missed the playoffs by 1.5 games, and the season was considered a big disappointment.
Ausmus and Everett don't become problems when no one else is hitting. The guys that are paid to hit are the problems.
Who said Ensberg was considered a premier third baseman? Who gives a shit what Baseball Tonight considers a premier thirdbaseman? You said he was an automatic out. He's not. He needs to hit for power, but the guy CAN get on base.
"They are not a good baseball team and thats that."
Who determines a "good" baseball team? You? I couldn't care less if you think the Astros are a good team.
Enjoy the AL. For all I know, you know something about that league.
Baseball tonight
The only portion of baseball tonight that i watch is web gems because that is the shit.

who
would you say is the best shortstop in baseball?
I was very suspicious
It was the same M.O.
- State you are a "huge fan"
- Lay down an illogical, hate-filled argument about why the person/team/etc. sucks so bad
- Fill comments with vast factual, statistical, & typing mistakes
- Get banned from BON.....again
HOF
if not as a Yankee, what hat will he wear?
Red Sox
I assume. Who gets to make this decision?
HOF
Whatever his last team is when he retires is what he'll get inducted as. That's why a lot of guys sign $1 contracts with their former teams, just to retire.
I think
you're wrong. You might be thinking of the NFL.
Baseball
allows the player to choose what hat he wears into the Hall - it has nothing to do with what team you played with last.
typo.
You're right
The HOF does choose. An official at the HOF had said as recently as a couple of years ago that there would be no way Clemens would be wearing a Yankees cap in the hall---his numbers with the Yankees pale in comparison to his numbers with every other team he's played for.
That would lead me to believe that he'll probably be wearing a Sox cap, simply because of the amount of time he spent with the Sox early in his career means that his Boston numbers are his most significant. That would lead to a rather weird scenario, as Red Sox fans really don't like him at all.
Of course, Clemens might be the least loved HOFer of all time. Bonds is hated by most of the league, but Giants' fans do love him. Who loves Clemens? Certainly not Red Sox Nation. Blue Jays' fans? Heck no. He was only there for a few years before he forced a trade to the Yankees. Astros fans? Perhaps a BONer could enlighten me as to the overall Houston sentiment towards Roger, but I doubt that he is loved by that fanbase. He didn't pitch long enough or do enough in that city to warrant that kind of affection. That leaves the Yankees. Unfortunately for Roger, Yankee fans view him as just a hired gun. They like him, but they certainly don't love him. Perhaps that will change if he leads them to a title this year, but I doubt it.
Can anyone think of another first-ballot HOFer (in any sport) who really isn't loved by any fanbase?
by Old Tex29 on May 8, 2007 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions
True
I have heard it said that Clemens would rather wear a UT hat into the hall than the hat of any of his MLB teams (if that were allowed). I suppose that's his one redeeming quality.
by Old Tex29 on May 8, 2007 9:01 AM CDT up reply actions
I sort of hate to say it
But Clemens is my least favorite Longhorn. He has always struck me as a real douche-bag.
Then again, as one of my friends said to me the other day regarding Matthew McConaughey, "He may be a douche-bag, but he's our douche-bag."
so you're a red sox AND an astros fan?
interesting. any other sports bigamy you'd like to admit to?
for someone who claims that clemens is a "hired hand" who only cares about himself and will whore himself out to any team that's currently winning, you seem to be doing the same thing with your fandom...
who are your other sports teams? did you ever even live in new england or did you just jump on the 2004 world series bandwagon?
I have been a sox fan all my life
I was born in Boston and have rooted for them my whole life. I moved to houston when i was about 7 and fell in love with Biggio and Bagwell. Is there something wrong with rooting for two teams.
It is not like they are eternal enemies or anything. I am a bigger sox fan than astros fan if you are thinking about that.
by txlonghorn34 on May 7, 2007 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions
you are an anomaly
There are so many queer ass bandwagon BoSox fans since they won the Series on 04. Most people pull for them out of hate for the Yankees as well. It is hard to find a true BoSox fan anymore.
by kicker @ Burnt Orange Nation on May 7, 2007 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree
that there are a lot of bandwagon Sox fans out there these days. That just doesn't bother me though. As a lifelong Red Sox fan (I'm a Masshole, born and raised), I find it nice that the Sox are finally good enough to attract bandwagon fans.

Read Bill Simmons
Go to espn.com and Bill Simmons will post one of his archived coloumns abou the Rocket and he made some great points about Clemens baiscally being a hired gun and how no city really associates with him at all.
by txlonghorn34 on May 7, 2007 12:52 PM CDT reply actions
I didn't know that
I personally like Bill Simmons and when he isn't discussing college basketball is pretty good. He does know his pop culture and the NBA and Boston sports.
I understand about the whole KD saga and Barnes bashing but overall i think he is excellent.
At least he isn't that ESPN moron Merill Hoge where it is completely wrong and inaccurate.

I'm a bit cheesed at Roger...
I'm a Houstonian and certainly can't argue with how bone-headed the GM's have been for the teams here at times, but this one I can't put on Drayton [as much as I'd like to]. When they let Beltran go I was furious with their lack of contact, but with Roger the GM and Owner were in constant touch with him only to be punked by not even getting a courtesy call. What's up with that Roger, is that how you repay organizations that cut you a sweet arse deal? That gave you a personal services contract, drafted your son so he could do the whole Dad and Son in MLB thing. Let you take road trips off when you weren't in the scheduled rotation?
And its not like the Yankees are giving him more real money (over $3+ millon of that money will go to offest NY City/State taxes alone) OR are any closer to be competitive this year. They may actually be less so. No my friends, I'm afraid Roger has reached a sad level of megalomania and now beleives more of his own hype than he can possibly deliver.
I had a bad feeling about this when he waited so long to come back last year and now its confirmed. At this point its all about feeding his head. I predict he'll go maybe 6-10, with the Yankee bullpen blowing more than a fair share of close games AND he'll make at least one trip to the DL with Andy P. And when those loquacious Yankee fans turn on him in 'a NY minute' he'll have noone to blame but himself.
yeah. he is gonna get shelled in the AL East
he should have stayed in the NL. Bad move on his part.
by kicker @ Burnt Orange Nation on May 7, 2007 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Good Point
I think HG Roger is gonna get shelled in the AL. He got fat (literally and figuratively) on NL hitters these last 3 years, and I'm afraid it's all gonna catch up to him.
And don't get me wrong - I'm not a Roger-hater, but I am ticked with him right now. For dissing the 'Stros. I can't blame him, but I think his intensions were, well, $$$ and nothing else. But it's his life, so go nuts.
Plus, the Yanks are only gonna get - what? - tops 5 innings per outing out of the guy. Is that worth $4.5 mil/month? Well, to the desperate Yanks, apparently. Good riddance to him though. I'll take the Wizard of Os any day of the week now.

I'm frustrated
As a houstonian, I'm still pissed at the last 20 seconds of the 7th game of the Jazz/Rockets series, and I can't believe the Astros let one of their best pitchers leave the team.
Its been a frustrating season in terms of pro athletics...at least 'SC and UT were more than respectable in the college realm.
They should be pretty good this year too.
Maybe a rematch of the 05 'ship?
(sorry if this post got off topic, but once dhab hijacked it I figure anything is kosher)
Astros: same as always
The 'stros disappoint because they look better on paper than on the field. Their best hitters are streaky and so are their worst ones. For a month and a half out of the year, Ausmus is a solid hitter. The rest of the time he is pathetic.
Maybe it's Garner, but the Astros seem unable to do the little things that win games. They can't bunt, they can't steal, they can't hit-and-run, they can't take the extra base. Just station-to-station baseball, so if they don't hit well, they lose.
This year I attribute their woes to two factors: the catastrophic breakdown of Lidge and the lack of a player having a surprise year (Pense, maybe?).
But hope springs eternal. The Brewers are hardly a lock and St.Louis can't seem to beat anyone but us.
this year
Their woes aren't the fault of Lidge or Pence.
Lidge has not been dominant, but Wheeler's done well as the closer. The bullpen IS NOT this teams problem right now; it's one the their strengths.
The Astros need Berkman to hit like Berkman, Lee to hit like Lee, Ensberg to hit like the 5-hole hitter he used to be, and the pitchers to continue to be outstanding.
Lidge and Pence (desperation callup) are the least of this team's worries.
All IMO, of course.
bullpen looked like shit last night.
almost blew it. Roy got the V though.
