Morning Coffee Won't Transfer
For the first time in its history, Major League Baseball's draft will be televised when ESPN2 broadcasts the event today at 1:00 p.m. CT. Baseball Prospectus prospect guru Kevin Goldstein lists two Longhorns in his top 50 available ($) in this year's draft - Kyle Russell (#28) and Bradley Suttle (#42).
On Russell, Goldstein writes: "Top of the scale power rates a pure 80 on 20-80 scouting scale; he set a new Texas home run mark with 28 in 223 at-bats, eclipsing the previous mark of 20; power isn’t his only tool--also a decent runner with a solid arm." On the downside, Goldstein notes that scouts worry about holes in his swing, and question whether his loopy, uppercut swing will translate well to advanced levels.
Goldstein goes on to say that Suttle is very solid in every facet of the game, but isn't exceptional at anything offensively. His soft hands and plus glove make him an attractive prospect, though.
Sticking with baseball, some disappointing news today that Josh Prince and Michael Demporio told Augie Garrido that they would be transferring from the program. Prince's departure is especially surprising, as he would have been a no-doubt starter at shortstop for the Longhorns next year (Fuller graduates). Interestingly, Prince (Lake Charles, LA) and Demporio (Marietta, GA) were the only two non-Texans on the roster.
Some tragic news for Kris Clack in his quest to get to the NBA: the Austin Toros have hired Quinn Snyder to be their new head coach.
Why they chose Quinn - who consistently achieved less with more at Missouri than any coach in the NCAAs - is beyond me. The guy proved incapable of developing talent at the collegiate level; I can't figure what the Toros' management thinks he brings to the table. Other than bad hair.
Via the Statesman's "Bevo Beat," a Tulsa World article on Bob Stoops as he preps for the 2007 season. Stoops believes he will get as good a play from his new quarterback (either redshirt freshman Sam Bradford, true freshman Keith Nichol, or junior Joey Halzle) as Texas got from Colt McCoy last year. "Every bit as good," Stoops said. "And hopefully better."
We'll see.

Amazing
By now he must have a team full of AAs.
The guy is full of bluster and chest puffing, but it's hard to tell if he is starting to believe his own BS. I guess that is his schtick.

So True
MB never said that CM was going to perform the way he did. He just said he didn't want CM to lose any game for us. Looks like CM has set the standard for new QBs.
Remember this is coming from a bunck of lies and cheats.

Transfers?? Who is left?
We will be faced with a seriously depleted squad next year, now that these guys are leaving Austin. As you say, Prince is a big surprise, given that he was going to start, and he's a legacy. Demporio was highly-recruited, but I have no idea what his prospects were for playing time next year.
Departures from the current squad:
Obvious:
Kyle Russell
Adrian Alaniz
Bradley Suttle
Randy Boone (Senior)
Chance Wheeless (Senior)
How about these guys:
Preston Clark
Jordan Danks
James Russell
Seniors:
Chais Fuller
Joseph Krebs
Nick Peoples
Clay Van Hook
Transfers:
Josh Prince
Michael Demporio
... and perhaps others
That's anywhere from 11-14 guys. And several of these are talents we won't easily replace, including Russell the Big Stick, Krebs the Setup Man and Boone the Closer.

Horns taken surprisingly late in the draft
Texas draft-eligible sophomores Kyle Russell and Bradley Suttle were taken in the fourth round of Thursday's Major League Baseball draft. The St. Louis Cardinals selected Russell with the 147th pick of the draft and the New York Yankees grabbed Suttle seven picks later at No. 154.
I wonder how much these guys could improve their standing if they came back for another year?
Texas' top recruit for next year also was drafted - pitcher Brandon Workman went at #107.

Danks
I don't believe he's draft eligible, he's going to need to be a real leader next season. We also get back Kenn Kasparek, so that's a plus.

Snyder
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that about the Toros hire. I could understand hiring someone with NBA experience but no track record of developing players, but Quinn does not really have that either.
As for Stoops, i'm sure all his QBs will be better than Colt, hell they'll probably be better than Vince, after all that's what they pay them for (cough BigRedImports Cough).

Clark will be gone...
...trust me on that one. It was a struggle getting him to come to college in the first place.
I've heard Danks was eligible because of where his birthday fell, but he hasn't really been chatted up by any of the draft lists, so I'm not sure...

Danks and Russell
Even if both are eligible, didn't they both turn away the draft to come to college? I would think there's at least a chance of both staying even if highly drafted because they both have lots of eligibility left.

James or Kyle?
I can't imagine that Kyle will be back, but James should. Would be a decent staff with Russell, Big Bird and Austin Wood. But we're still hurting in depth, and in the setup/closer roles.

How many defenses has Stoops had
that's been "The Best Since I've Been Here"?
Although I don't think I've heard that one this year... yet.
