That's a shame
I was really looking up to seeing him play this year. And I certainly hope that Mack won't let him after that.

Melton
Just wondering... what did we do to Melton?
I'm guessing we're going to do Kindle what we did to Melton.

Mack is being Mack
"We're aware of Sergio's situation and are disappointed anytime one of our players is accused of wrongdoing," Brown said in a statement late Saturday. "We take a strong stance against drinking and driving and will thoroughly investigate this situation. Following the completion of the legal process, we will do what's best for the university, Sergio and the team. One thing we have really prided ourselves on in our program is our family atmosphere, and this will be handled within our family."

Florida troubled too
Offensive lineman Ronnie Wilson was arrested in April and later suspended for the season after allegedly firing a semiautomatic weapon in the air following a dispute outside a club. In June, running back Brandon James was arrested on marijuana possession. Safety Dorian Munroe spent a night in jail after removing a police-issued boot from his car and placing it in his trunk. And misdemeanors have also been filed against cornerback Jacques Rickerson (marijuana possession), linebacker Dustin Doe (a brawl) and safety John Curtis (probation violation).
Asked Thursday whether this offseason’s incidents have been particularly troubling, Meyer said, "They’re all troubling. Every year you’re dealing with something. [This offseason] was maybe a few more than we’d like."

And Okie State
Linebacker Alex Odiari, who started four games for Oklahoma State last season, has been arrested on allegations he was in a bar while underage and violated an emergency protection order.

Washington State OG Kicked Off Team
For DUI, but that was after a 3rd offense.
I think Mack makes Sergio sit a couple of games to start the season (including the trip to Disney World), but he gets to play some during the Rice game.

let's be fair
while drinking and driving is a serious offense which is dangerous to the driver and society at large, and it is deserving of punishment (both legal and disciplinary), it's not an offense that Kindle should be kicked off the team or suspended a long time for.
He didn't steal anything, he didn't do something violent, there were no illegal drugs or guns involved. He was stupid. Nothing more. This doesn't show a predilection towards more trouble. Almost all of us have driven after drinking at some point in our lives and some of us have been lucky enough not to have been caught. That doesn't make us troublemakers, prone to further illegal acts. It makes us morons.
Kindle maybe should be suspended for a game at most, assuming that the charges stick. One drunken driving is terrible and should never happen, but as long as it doesn't turn into a habit, it's not worth more drastic action on the part of the team.

crimes are relative
Reminds me of a piece I read in the Houston Chronicle about Barry Bonds, to wit:
Hey, get off his case! Look, he hasn't
electrocuted or drowned any dogs, sold drugs to
minors, abused any children, bashed anyone's head in at a drunken brawl, strangled his wife and kids, or done anything to harm another living being. Let's give the guy a break!
Levity aside, I'm big on squashing drunk drivers before they wipe out carloads of families, but this shouldn't be a career-damaging event for a young man doing what few of us could plead innocent to. And you're right; even if the charges stick, over-reaction could be as bad as letting it slide. Let's hope this is an eye-opener for Kindle, the law jumps on him with a hefty fine and maybe related community service, and Coach expresses his displeasure with an appropriate in-house punishment. . .I too think a one-game suspension would be appropriate.

That's wacky man
I'm sorry but it's not just some stupid thing. Being in the car with another person who is drunk is just a stupid thing but placing yourself and others in danger while drinking (underage I might add. It should be noted that I am not slammin' anyone for that but it just adds to the severity of the arrest) is dangerous. It's not being drunk in public and being arrested. He was actively putting the people around him at risk.
Essentially, you are saying that someone doing something stupid doesn't deserve to be punished. I'm glad the courts in America don't take being stupid as a reason to let someone off the hook for a crime they committed.
No however much I like Kindle and still do despite his shortcomings, I think the dude deserves a long suspension (7+ games) or more.

Stealing and drugs...
billyzane,
How is stealing and getting caught with illegal drugs worse than DUI? They shouldn't even be compared. Drugs and stealing aren't putting lives at risk. DUI clearly is.
by goingforthecorner on Jul 30, 2007 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think the point
and i tend to agree, is that DUI isn't quite the red flag for indicating serious character issues like drugs or stealing. let's face it, drinking is socially acceptable, and by and large drinking and driving is on a sliding scale of social acceptability. most people wouldn't bat an eye at somebody having one beer and driving. maybe a few less with two. less with three. but it's a fuzzy line unless everybody's taking a BAC before getting behind the wheel. of course, Sergio is underaged and shouldn't be drinking in the first place, and in Texas, there is a zero tolerance policy with DUI when you're underaged. he could have had one drink two hours before driving, rolled through a stop sign, and get charged with DUI (probably not how it went down). like BZ said, he's mostly guilty of being careless and irresponsible. the state will give him a nice package of probation, peeing in a cup for a little while, DUI school, alcohol evaluation, suspended license, that should more than make him realize the error of his ways. i think a 2-game or so suspension is probably in order, but i don't think he should be kicked off the team. that would just be turning your back on the kid, who might just need the structure and support of football to keep him out of more trouble.

The reason why this bothers me more
than Henry Meltons DUI or Joseph's crazy arrest isnt because Sergio's probably a better football player than the other two.
It's that at this time last year we were reading about how much of a leader Sergio was becoming. He was waking freshmen up to get to practice. He was showing true leadership qualities.
Getting a DUI is the exact opposite of showing leadership qualities.

More of the same....
They've developed a very obvious trend ever since Dick Tomey and Greg Robinson left for their respective HC positions.
The discipline is lacking.

wow
you know, i go on vacation to montana for a week; i relax; i relieve my stress from taking the bar exam; i try to become a more balanced person; and you know what? i still hate you and everything you stand for.
that's all. i don't even need to say anything about your post. almost everyone here is thinking the same thing.
no need for you to respond. i know you feel the same way about me. love you, you old coot.

probably, wells. probably.
montana wasn't as relaxing as i had hoped. luckily, i've got 3 more weeks of vacation to go: thailand, vietnam, and equally exotic houston, texas.
maybe i'll come back a changed man. or maybe i'll be the same guy, except with dengue fever and a VD. here's hoping for the former, but betting on the latter.

You're well respected on this blog..your insight is much needed no matter what mood you're in. I think you've pulled me on the carpet a few times, just made my JD-Black and H20 a little stronger that afternoon that's all.
Hope all goes well in passing the BAR exam.

There but for the grace of God go I...
Sure seems to be a lot of folks here who may have forgotten the hundreds of times they/we drove under the influence of, without getting caught, and/or without incident.
Give the kid a break...he did what thousands of other kids do EVERY SINGLE DAY. The difference is he had the misfortune to get caught. Should it be forgotten or swept under the rug? Of course not; he deserves to be punished like any other kid who does something stupid and gets caught. By the same token, however, the punishment should fit the crime, and his past offenses (or lack thereof) should be taken into account.
Some of y'all need to climb down from your lofty perch and think back to the stupid things you/we did as kids...and thank your lucky stars it didn't go bad for you/us.

I dunno...
I've heard very little "kick him off the team" sentiment. One guy says he hopes Mack doesn't let him play. The harshest anyone else wants is 7+ games suspension. The best thing is that we have a wimpy OOC schedule and K-State before OU. No one wants to get the kind of negative feedback that Callahan got for one game on Purify, so I would definitely suspend him for at least three games (no Disney Land for you, young man!) and up to five (no revenge on K-State), but I would be surprised if they would be so obvious about letting him come back specifically for the OU game. I'd take 3 games, but would prefer that he misses the whole OOC slate.
Kindle will be fine if he stays straight after this (and if he learns how to f-in' play; See my comment on the Chiles spring game TD run), but Melton is thoroughly screwed. He's already a sort of "has-been" from his attempt at fullback, so this just makes everyone hate him more.

Now that Andre.....
...Jones has had an arrest warrant issued for his participation in the robbery that landed Robert Joseph in jail last weekend, we all can anticipate the childish rant/response to come from BZ today.
The charge will be aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.
As I said before, they've developed a very obvious trend ever since Dick Tomey and Greg Robinson left for their respective HC positions.
The discipline is lacking.
