VY's Greatest Hits

This is the kind of project us BONers live for: an all-time Vince Young greatest plays list. A fellow writer has asked me to help compile the complete list of VY's best plays, a task we're more than up for here at BON.

Here's what we've got so far off the top of our heads - fill in the rest as you recall your favorite VY moments.

  1. 4th and 5 to win the national title game
  1. Scramble against Houston Texans to win in overtime
  1. Fourth down and 12 against the NY Giants to get a first down en route to a 21 point comeback
  1. Long scramble to end the half with a touchdown against the Bills
  1. Touchdown pass to Sweed at Ohio State
  1. The entire game against Oklahoma State when he ran for over 200 yards
  1. Scramble against the Pats for a touchdown
  1. 4th and 30 scramble against Kansas to keep Texas' 2004 Rose Bowl dreams alive
  1. Entire Rose Bowl against Michigan (192 yards rushing, 4 TDs, 180 passing, TD)

Other big plays/games?

First game against OU

He had a run that just had a certain feel.

He was still relatively unknown at that point [the jury was still out for even the UT community], but I remember that when I saw that run, I thought "this guy is going to be the best player this school has ever seen."

Didn't right after that play

Vince got to the goal line but fumbled?

by Wells on Aug 13, 2007 1:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

didn't he fumble, and then they return it for a

TD?

I remember Vince

absolutely freezing OU LB Teddy Lehman and passing him by about 6 ft in the open field....Lehman had no clue how to go about tackling Vince.

by burntup on Aug 13, 2007 1:12 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I remember that well.

Hard to tackle Vince with broken ankles.

by whills on Aug 13, 2007 4:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Not worthy of the list, but...

I've always appreciated the fact that if the defense gets the ball on a turnover, Vince is going right after them.  I've never seen a QB make so many hard hits/first contacts/tackles.  In one of the Titans games last year, Vince threw an INT, and I swear to god, he was in the receiver's face before he could even plant his feet to start running.

Vince Young wins football games.

by chief on Aug 13, 2007 12:54 PM CDT   0 recs

definitely

in the 2005 game against Texas Tech, Vince threw a couple of INTs early in the game.  I think it was the second one, defender intercepted the ball and was returning it down the sideline... Out of nowhere comes #10, flying sideways, taking out the lead blocker (a HUGE guy), knocking him several yards out of bounds.

It was a very smart play, because it forced the ballcarrier to shift away from the sideline, which held him up just enough so that another Texas player could bring him down from behind.

I must have watched that play 50 times on the DVR.

by SelimSivad on Aug 13, 2007 1:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You did not see too many defenders

trying to find the QB to take a free shot after an intersecption when VY was on the field.

What?

Are you guys running a lending library here? Are you cheating PB out of his duly earned royalties (do editors get royalties?)? I really don't like all this illegal talk that's going on around here on BON. Err.

So take that.

by Kahuna on Aug 14, 2007 10:38 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

you sort of already mentioned it, but...

In case the whole game doesn't count, the 80-yard run against OSU was an awesome single play.

He had a couple of great, long passes againt OU in 2005.

by hornbone on Aug 13, 2007 1:01 PM CDT   0 recs

I'm thinking of a specific play
but I can remember when it was.

Defender comes on a blitz and hits Vince with what would take down 99% of QBs, but does not wrap up thinking Vince would just go down, so Vince just shrugs him off and makes a big play.

Very vague description, but I am thinking of a specific incident.  Help?

by Wells on Aug 13, 2007 1:08 PM CDT   0 recs

On the list

It's the scramble against the NY Giants. Amazing play.

VY Videos

Got there ahead of me, but here's the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ12p...

My other favorite is that 80 yarder vs OSU, where Vince's pump fake, beyond the line of scrimmage, takes the OSU player completely by suprise (parodied in that Rudy's commercial).

by sharkbait101 on Aug 13, 2007 1:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Pump Fake, run for 80 yds

This absolutely has to be in the top 10, as a stand-alone play.  I both laughed & cried when I was watching that play......then continued to rewind the DVR, and watch it again & again.

Although, you have to admit the defender had a really good vertical jump.

by Shake on Aug 13, 2007 2:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The best move he ever made was

going to Texas,"The" University. Besides that particular play, I'd say everytime VY was on the field was greatness... The comebacks from Okie State were pretty freaking impressive too.

"Nobody leaves this field until we beat the hell out of them".................... L.J."Louis"Jordan in 1913 before kickoff of the Texas/ou game.

by ouALWAYSsux on Aug 13, 2007 1:10 PM CDT   0 recs

The more I think about it,

I bet his best play was the attitude he instilled into his teammates to never give up on a play. Why do you suppose Sweed and the other receivers down field knew that if they can't get open, they might be down there for run support.

How long did the OL hold there primary block knowing that VY needed there help. How many times did you see Thomas, Pittman, Cosby, downfield looking to take out a defender so VY could get a first down on 3rd and 19.

Thats the best play VY ever made, he made his teammates understand that you don't quit, you play until they blow the whistle. You believe in your teammates. You believe in the team. How many lives on that, and this team did he change. I know he changed my life. I bet he changed yours too.

Vince

what was it that he said to the O-line before that 3rd-and-30 against Ok State (I think?)... "I just need enough time to make about 13 sandwiches back here."

He just inspired an amazing amount of confidence.

by SelimSivad on Aug 13, 2007 1:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Did he really

say that?

well

my memory's a little foggy, but I remember something like that.  In searching for it, though, I found this funny quote:

"It's also not Young's fault his defense is solid, his offensive line is nasty and his receivers came to play this season. Ordering a sandwich might be his most frequent play-call in the second half."

I also stumbled upon this site, which might be helpful in the discussion:  The Vince Vault - Heisman Trophy Candidate Video Highlights.

Rose Bowl vs. Michigan

it's unfair to count the whole game as just one play... there were at least 2-3 plays worthy of being "Top 10" material.

"He had a 30-yarder in the first half that was nice... this 60-yarder was twice as nice..."

I re-watched it recently, and reviewed all the badass VY plays in slow-motion.  It's f-ing unbelievable, you see 5 guys collapsing on him and you'd think, "no way can he escape this," and then he does it over and over again, all the way down the field.

The funniest moment in the game...

...is hearing Dan Fouts scream "NO?!?!" in amazement after a Vince touchdown.

by SelimSivad on Aug 13, 2007 1:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Dang, I've watched it 20 times and get drunk everytime I watch it. I like Fout's "he's the best I've ever seen".........period.

That reminds me when VY got slapped in the balls

I want to say this was in the Michigan game, just after half time, and was a player just walking by after the play was whistled dead. I'll look at the DVD and see for sure whether it's Michigan or SC. But when that happened, I went, oh, shit, they're gonna pay for that. Big time. And they did. heh It goes in the 'don't tug on Superman's cape category.'

by whills on Aug 13, 2007 5:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

More

The TD against Michigan where he effortlessly spun out of a sure sack and scored a TD.

The PASS to Pittman right before halftime against OU.  Before this play I was still nervous that OU could win, yet again.  But with Brown and/or Davis actually calling an aggressive play and VY executing it to perfection.  I knew the streak was finally over.

The Superman dive against USC.

The pass to beat Kansas (sloan thomas caught it?).

by JohnsonUT on Aug 13, 2007 1:21 PM CDT   0 recs

Kansas game winner?

Tony Jeffrey caught the game winner vs Kansas I believe.

My favorite...

That one time when he singlehandedly ended world hunger, piloted the spaceship he built to Mars, cured cancer and male pattern baldness, and was simultaneously elected leader of every recognized nation of the world.  I think it was a Tuesday.

You can't pick a whole game

That's just not fair to rank a whole game. You would have to make this "VY's Best Arbitrary Periods of Time on a Football Field". How do you argue the merits of the Okie State game (#2) versus the play against the Giants? What can you use to compare/rank that?

As punishment I sentence you to watching the Michigan and Oklahoma State games over again and listing the best play from both. Sighing wistfully is optional.

Pop your collar!!!

Me being from Lubbock and being harrassed year round.  The final touchdown of the 2005 Tech game was one of my favorite.  I know it was a little 10-15 yd scramble for a touchdown. After being knocked down in the end zone, he quickly got up & popped his collar, as if to say..."We've been killing you guys all day. Now you get to watch me celebrate!"

by LonghorninRaiderland on Aug 13, 2007 2:32 PM CDT   0 recs

Kansas

I think the sequence of plays against Kansas stands out the most in my mind from the '05 regular season.  I woke up hung over at like 1 or so, and the game was already at halftime or in the 3rd.  We were down and I was pissed, so my roommates (who I woke up immediately) and I threw on the rally hats and watched the rest in nervous excitement.  The 4th and 18 run was great because he juked and shook all Big-12 LB Nick Reid(?) around the 15 yard mark.  Then the pass to Jeffrey to win it.

I think that 4th and 30 run was from the Mizzou game.

VY receiving

One of my favorite plays was in the 2004 Mizzou game when Vince had a 48 yard reception from Ramonce Taylor. He caught the ball and the defender got a pass interference flag. Vince had 48 receiving yard and 19 passing yards.

VY is like Moses, he led me to the promised land.

by hookemhorny on Aug 13, 2007 3:55 PM CDT   0 recs

The Michigan one that ends

when viewed from the end zone with 5 Michigan players laying on the ground, and Vince walking unscathed into the end zone.

by thestos on Aug 13, 2007 4:19 PM CDT   0 recs

There was a great photo from the end zone

of all those Michigan players, plus the All American safety, lying in his wake and late to the goal line. I used it as a screen saver for a long time; the epitome of domination.

There was a great screening block on that play, too. One could nearly do a series of great blocks by the receivers that helped set VY up on many of those runs. That was one of the many assets in '04 and '05. With a mature, experienced group of receivers, I hope to see that legacy continued, with more gusto and execution this season.

by whills on Aug 13, 2007 4:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

the kansas 4th down...

was a 4th and 18, definitely....the part i liked most about that play was that he slowed down with 5 or so yards to go and 2 guys still chasing him.

The 3rd and 10 play against Michigan was amazing. I was in that Endzone (the stands that is). I remember taking a picture as he lifts his leg for the snap and thinking we really needed it (i think we were down by 10 at that point). But he takes a few steps forward, gets half wrapped up, spins out of it and waltzs into the end zone. That was unbelievable.

But....my ALLTIME favorite (non championship game moment) is...against Arkansas...down 17-16, he takes the snap, a defender coming in for a "sure" tackle, he steps toward him, spins, defender falls, then avoids 3 defenders closing in on him to pass to Cedric Benson on the sideline...Benson then makes a nice run to the endzone. That's probably my favorite.
