Football Saturday Open Thread
This is not just Saturday morning any more. These are not just weekends any more.
As of today, weekends are completely, totally, wholly different than they were even just a week ago. Football is back.

Lee Corso may be a penis, yes.
But it's still a better Saturday when he's around.
This is your open thread for all non-Longhorns football games today.
11:00 AM East Carolina at #8 Virginia Tech (ESPN)
2:30 PM Washington State at #9 Wisconsin (ESPN)
2:30 PM Georgia Tech at Notre Dame (NBC)
2:30 PM #15 UCLA at Stanford (FSN)
2:30 PM Nevada at #18 Nebraska (ABC)
4:30 PM Arizona at BYU (Versus)
5:45 PM Oklahoma State at #14 Georgia (ESPN2)
6:45 PM Kansas State at #17 Auburn (ESPN)
7:00 PM #20 Tennessee at #12 California (ABC)
9:15 PM Idaho at #1 USC (FSN)
*All rankings from BlogPoll
I'm headed out to tailgate and attend the ND-GT game. I'll be racing back here in time for the Longhorn game. Texas-Arkansas State comments go in the next open thread. All other CFB talk here.
Welcome home, brothers and sisters.

Va Tech Down Early
The Hokies turn the ball over twice in the first quarter and are down 7-3 to start the second. Is it possible we are witnessing the old cliche of being overhyped coming true?
Football's back!
CSU tied with CU, the Hokies struggling early, Michigan State up big on UAB. Life is good.
appalachian state is HOT HOT HOT
they score another touchdown, go up 28-14 with 2 minutes left in the first half.
i know app st isn't a normal 1-AA team, as they've won like 3 straight national championships, but still...michigan...jesus...
and
it's not like michigan's giving the game away either. no turnovers. app state's just dominating.
Anyone showing it?
it appears
to be on the Big Ten Network!
ahahahaahahaha even further.
Other than the stadium, about 10 people are watching.

he might be shot

which is always funny to say until it happens.
man.... that looks worse right now than CU last year. I can't believe that Appalachian State can hang onto that.

Stats
Other than the score, the stats look pretty even. THat alone is newsworthy.
His QB Rating
is 396.22
jeez
How many games does Michigan play
against spread offenses?
We play TTech and others with partial elements, so we must prepare for those as a matter of course. Ever since the days of the Coogs' run-and-shoot the Horns have had to keep that in their defense.
But how about Michigan - has their defense had such experience? The do face passing attacks - Purdue, et. al. - but the spread is a different animal.
Any clarification?
And for Carr, the black ball - or at least the threat of it - is now in play.
Called Dish Network
They don't have an agreement with the Big Ten network yet. Apparently BTN turned down DN's offer.

Michigan
intercepted a pass deep in App State territory, but only gets a field goal.
App State has driven the field, now has a 1st and 10 at the Michigan 14 yard line.
App State's qb is now 11/12 for 164, 3 TD's, one Int.

App State field goal
31-20.
More importantly, App State is keeping Michigan's offense from wearing down their defense.

va tech has 8 rushing yards.

but App State took over two minutes off the clock. That's two minutes that Michigan wasn't wearing them down some more.

CU/CSU
How big is this rivalry? It seems this is a good game every year.
it's a huge rivalry
I watch it for the potential for riot.
There's no class in Colorado. It's a vicious rivalry, though.

Sonny Lubick is a crafty sonofagun.
And one of his missions in life seems to be to deal hell to Colorado. Every since he took over this has been a vicious game. As cornnation notes, there's riot potential because CSU doesn't go kindly into the night, err, early morning now.
App st. fumbles on own 30
michigan recovers, drives for a td, but 2-pt conversion fails. 31-26. almost the end of the 3rd quarter.

if they can take care of the ball
then yes. this hasn't been a fluke. the stats show app st. dominating.
CSU-CU
coulda gone to this game, but i could care less about these 2 teams.
vicious rivalry though. they really seem to hate each other. the students started this unity thing last year, where representatives from each school walk so many miles with each other to the stadium and deliver the game ball. supposed to be about fair sportsmanship and all, but it seems like a big facade.

has 4th and 5 on the app st. 33 with 7 minutes to go. they go for it (as they have to) and henne throws incomplete. app st. ball. 6:55 left in the game.

I got an HDTV about a month ago. Watching college football is now about 2.5 times better than it was last year. I cannot believe I waited so long.
When AppSt had the ball on the prior drive
they went for the throat with the long passes. Didn't make it but reinforced Michigan's self consciousness about making mistakes.
I definitely get the feeling that the Boise State Imperative is in play this season.
I hope the Horns are seeing this and understanding what a target they are, too.
ApState QB

Upset Alert
Not football related, but Federer just lost the first set to a young American named John Isner. The crowd is going crazy.
Dude is 6'9"
... and has a killer serve. He went on a tear at one of the tournaments in the run-up to the US Open and upset 3 top 10 players in a row until Roddick took him out. He's definetly going to be a good one, and could pull the upset if he keeps up the big serve. But I have a feeling Federer will make the adjustments to his game and take Isner out of his, and win it in 4.

Truly an awful performance by ND in all phases.
But georgia tech, which could lead 28-0, has only a 16-0 lead. I think that's always a dangerous situation. GT will be overconfident.

Was at the game
Left at halftime. The Irish were getting absolutely DESTROYED on the lines. The quarterback had zero time to throw, and ND couldn't get any penetration on the Tech OL.
After watching today, I'm convinced it's gonna be a damn long year for ND. Their line is so bad that VY would have had to work his ass off to get anything done.
this is why
I don't get the love-fest for Weis at ND. They're going to be bad this season. The Irish hated Tyrone Willingham and they've already throw a gob of money at Weis (although he's made them a ton of dough).
They're going to suck. I've always liked the Irish, but not as long as that fat bastard is there.
