Morning Coffee Tries To Get Back On Track
Way back in June, when Roy Watts and J'Marcus Webb transferred from the program, we lamented the sudden lack of depth at tackle. That depth is more relevant than ever after Adam Ulatoski's injury against TCU.
Mum's the word on the extent of his injury, but the plan right now is to slide Chris Hall to right tackle while inserting Cedric Dockery in at right guard.
It's hard to say exactly what that means for the line. Chris Hall wasn't doing well at guard and, according to those who know line play far better than I do, performed much better at tackle. There's also the return of Dockery, who is probably Texas' best pure run blocker right now. And, of course, we should note that Ulatoski just hasn't looked very good in his young career at Texas. Could this be a net plus? It's too early to say, but the depth questions are as relevant as ever. If the coaches think Tray Allen is close to being ready, they need to find times to get him in the games.
Chip Brown says it's "official": Texas is a pass-first team. During Mack Brown's Monday chat with reporters, he indicated that he understood this team couldn't be a run-first group like the Vince Young-led offenses were.
"Whether you throw it to run or run it to throw, it's unimportant to us. We've usually tried to run it to throw it. And if it's more important for us to spread people out and hit some creases, we'll do that."
This is a more important development than it might appear, especially if you believe that what Greg Davis does in the booth has a lot to do with what Mack Brown thinks the offense needs to establish. It very well might be, for instance, that Mack Brown was the one who thought Texas needed to open the TCU game with two offset-I formation run plays to try to "establish" some sort of running presence.
We'll find out this week how much of all this is just talk, and how much is actual evolution.
LD's weekly ESPN Gameday show review is up for perusal. Those of you who may be new to these parts may not know of this outstanding feature, but LD is brave enough to annotate each week's ESPN Gameday show, with analysis on what CFB's most influential pundits are saying.
Why does it matter? For a primer, go back and read LD's 2005 college football narrative essay. Whether we like it or not, the talking heads still set the college football agenda. And that agenda influences voters. And voters, of course, still send two teams to play for the crystal football.
This week's ESPN Pick 'Em League games are up and ready for selection, and my are there some tough ones. As noted in the previous thread, FSU @ Colorado is no easy game to call, nor is Notre Dame-Michigan, Tennessee-Florida, or Arkansas-Alabama. Entries must be submitted by 11 AM Saturday.

Ulatoski
was not playing well, at all. I do not think he is ready to start at the D1a level. Maybe he can develop the next two years, but got abused by Arkie St and TCU.
That being said I hope he gets healthy, because he gives the O-line depth -- and seems like a nice kid who deserves a chance to play.
Even if he was terrible.
Thank you, Peter
For keeping those of us who might not have the time to seek out the status of Ulatoski informed about all things important to the team. No big deal, but a thank you is in order every now and then just on general principle.
And I echo EyesofBevo's comments about the kid - sure hope he's OK - seems like a nice kid, doing his best, etc. But didn't things seem to get a whole lot better once he went out? Still to PB's point about depth, the abyss is now just one high ankle sprain away...
Tray Allen
in every training camp story I read, it sounded like the coaches were hell bent on redshirting Tray Allen. I specifically remember them saying "we are playing hime exclusively at left tackle."
I also remember them raving every day about Chris Hall, who has not parlayed a good training camp into good performance.
Do you think the coaches will actually burn TA's redshirt when he has no functional idea of playing on the right side?
No I don't
I don't think they will put Tray Allen at right tackle because I think they will just cover Chris Hall on passing downs with a TE or the FB if he is overmatched and I think Hall can handle the run-blocking part.

Ulatoski's elbow
What follows is ALL SPECULATION until Thursday. When I saw the injury on TV, I thought he partially dislocated his right elbow. This was consistent with the fact that they put a splint on it in the field. I'm guessing the team doctor pulled the elbow back out on the sideline, and then left it in a splint. They are likely waiting for some of the swelling to go down before they do an MRI to evaluate ligament damage, and hence no update until Thursday. I read up on this on WebMD and the Orthopaedic Clinic website and, depending on the severity, it looks to be an injury that will keep him out 4-6 weeks. Hopefully I'm wrong and the injury is not as severe as this.
But we'll have to wait until Thursday to find out more.
Incidentally, I'm puzzled by his weak play this year as he seemed to handle the job fairly well last year. I wonder if he didn't have an injury to his elbow or arm already because it just seemed like this year he was weak when jamming the defender with his arm. A right tackle's right arm is his life, because he often uses it to shock a defender on an outside rush.
I, too
did not know that Jimmy Clausen is 20 years old. So was he held back a grade earlier in school?
