PB's Picks
It's time to return the weekly picks. If you're the betting type, please note that I probably destroyed all my picking karma by bragging about my nice start in the ESPN league.
Proceed at your own peril.
USC at Nebraska
Even if you're not sold on USC's offense, and even if you do give Nebraska some sort of boost for playing in Lincoln, it's hard to make a great case for the Huskers Saturday evening. I keep thinking about Pete Carroll having an extra week to decide how he intends to ruin Sam Keller's evening. Keller's only been average so far, and he's facing a wholly different kind of animal this week.
The Pick: USC 33 Nebraska 13
Notre Dame at Michigan
If Chad Henne's playing, I'd have trouble imagining a Notre Dame victory. As is, with Mallett making his first start, I'm not so sure. This may be a cripple fight, but something in my gut thinks Notre Dame's going to score enough to win. How's that for science?
(And no, this isn't a 'homer' pick. I really don't care if the Irish win or lose.)
The Pick: Notre Dame 21 Michigan 20
Tennessee at Florida
Football returns to CBS in time for this race to 50 points. I can't see Florida losing this at home. No matter how green the defense.
The Pick: Florida 41 Tennessee 30
Ohio State at Washington
Ohio State's defense can keep the team close against most anyone, but the offense looks pedestrian. I like Washington at home here, though you do worry about all the youth.
Washington 23 Ohio State 20
Louisville at Kentucky
I haven't checked the over/under on this game, but it better be damn high. I really am eager to see this one, and though I don't expect Kentucky's defense to be anything short of overwhelmed, I'm itching to see if Woodson can keep the Wildcats close. I'd love to see a ridiculous five-hour shootout in Lexington.
Louisville 55 Kentucky 42
The Rest
Alabama 27
Arkansas 17
Boston College 30
Georgia Tech 27
Michigan State 24
Pittsburgh 20
BYU 34
Tulsa 21

Reverse Bama-Arky
At least - that's going to be an ugly beatdown in T-town. Hogs by at least 18.

You know what would be really tough?
To be a true blue (and maise) fan at home and to lose three in a row in the fashion they have. I wonder how Texas fans would take it if the Horns had lost to ASU, TCU and then KState in a row. Oh, ugly, extremely ugly.
In the land where the Ws have been flowing freely of late, three-game losing streaks are something you have to think really hard to remember. Hasn't happened this century.
- Mack Brown's second year and the way it ended put a question mark in many people's minds that really didn't get settled until Dusty Magnum kicked that final field goal in the Rose Bowl.
Nov. 26 #7 Texas lost to #24 A&M, 20-16
Dec. 4 #12 Texas lost to #3 Nebraska 22-6
Jan. 1 #14 Texas lost to #24 Arkansas, 27-6
True, that was the Big 12 Championship and Cotton Bowl, not losses to some no-names from Georgia, but ranked, successful teams.
Go back to 1997 to get a real metallic taste in your mouth:
Oct. 18 Missouri 37, Texas 29
Oct. 25 Colorado 47, Texas 30
Nov. 1 Baylor 23, Texas 21
Nov. 8 Texas Tech 24, Texas 10
Of course, a different Mac would pay for that. Throw in a 66-3 shocker at UCLA, a 42-16 whipping by Oklahoma State AND a loss to A&M, 27-14, and we got all our bad feelings purged in a long season. Makes me feel a little more fortunate today. And yet none of that really approximates what Michigan fans might feel tomorrow if they lose. And I realize that Notre Dame's fans might not be that far away from the same emotional black hole. It's a sad fate to contemplate.

Good picks
We disagree on BC and Louisville (upset in Lexington!), but I'm with you on the rest. I'm currently on top of the Yahoo Pick'em group Doug at Hey Jenny Slater has going, so I'll prolly eat it this week, too.

Bad enough...
I wonder how Texas fans would take it if the Horns had lost to ASU, TCU and then KState in a row. Oh, ugly, extremely ugly.
It was plenty bad enough losing consecutive games to 1st-year HC Ron Prince and Dennis Franchione.
Major Applewhite matching wits with Hog DC Reggie Herring (one of the very best) will make for a game to watch.

ND over U of M?
Two freshman QBs, granted... but AT Michigan and WITH veterans on the offense? Michigan has the advantage...
It's gonna be a helluva a pillow fight!

because the home field
has been such a huge advantage for michigan so far this year.....

ONE freshman QB
Evidently Demetrious Jones is pouting about being benched and is now going to leave the team. Don't know if any of you remember, but at one point Jones was very high on the Horns, but couldn't get Mack to recruit him.
"At 2:30 today, while boarding the bus to Michigan, I was notified that Demetrius Jones had decided not to make the trip," Weis said in a statement. "I have not spoken to Demetrius and can only say that he missed the team bus. Any additional comment would be without all the facts."

Nebraska / USC
Am I the only one who thinks this game will be much closer than what PB is predicting? I don't know that I would go so far as to say Nebraska will win outright, but I definitely think they'll cover and this game may be decided by a field goal or less. Thoughts?

i think he's underestimating the spread
did you see nebraska play wake forest last week? if they play anything like that, they're going to lose by 50. keller was throwing the ball worse than stephen mcgee in that game.

Louisville / Kentucky
Wagerline.com has the o/u at 76.5 today, just to answer your question above.
by Screw O.U. on Sep 15, 2007 10:39 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
which half
is the 76.5 for the first half or second half? or for the combination of 2nd and third quarters?
by FreedomDip on Sep 15, 2007 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not Nebraska
USC will win by 20 or more because so many people in the country have thrown LSU and OU into the top mix and SC probably feels slighted.
It's not about Lincoln or the sea of red. It's not about NU's close game at Wake or USC's sleepwalk thru Idaho. It's about USC making a statement that they're still No. 1 and that they're going to be tough whether on the road or at home
That's why it won't be close. Although I'm rooting for NU :)
