Random Gridiron Thoughts
Lots to read about on the web this morning. I'm so damn glad football season is here!
Had a bunch of questions and comments, none of which have to do with Texas, so thought I'd gather them here. Feel free to jump in.
- Is Iowa State the new Baylor? Gene Chizik is still winless after the Cyclones lost another home game, this time 24-10 to Northern Iowa.
- Speaking of Baylor, they absolutely demolished Rice 42-10. Anyone else looking forward to the Owls' visit to DKR on the 22nd?
- Anyone know what happened to Bobby Reid? He didn't play after the 1st quarter in OSU's 42-6 home opener against Florida Atlantic.
- Big XII went 10-2 yesterday, with only sad sacks ISU and CU losing (33-14 to Arizona State). With the Big 10's stuggles yesterday (Michigan loses badly again, Wisconsin barely escapes Nevada) and the ACC in freefall (Va Tech demolished by LSU, Miami demolished by OU, FSU barely surviving UAB), is Texas now the 3rd strongest conference after the SEC and Pac 10?
- Good news for Texas fans everywhere but Norman yesterday. Texas beat TCU which easily handled Baylor which beat Rice. So Texas easily beats Rice and Baylor, no surprise there. But bear with me here. UCF and ISU are gimme's. Now Auburn beat KSU then lost to South Florida, so Texas should easily handle KSU in 3 weeks. Nebraska barely survived Wake Forest, and Sam Keller was absolutely awful in the win, so I'm no longer worried about the Huskers' visit to DKR. Oklahoma State's "vaunted" offense struggled against Georgia, which lost to the unranked Gamecocks last night, and Bobby Reid is suddenly MIA after the 1st quarter, so the trip to Stillwater looks less daunting now. Tech? Yawn. They were down 21-7 to UTEP before they woke up. And the Aggies had to punch in a 2-point conversion with the Mack Truck to finally down Fresno State in overtime. At home. So that leaves me with the only place there wasn't much joy for Horns fans yesterday - Norman. Yes, the Land Thieves demolished Miami 51-13, but then these aren't your father's Hurricanes. And there were a couple of glimmers of hope buried in the box score - Murray 15 for 64 and Patrick 7 for 47, and until garbage time Bradford was only averaging about 3.5 yards per pass. I'm not discounting how much better Blow U has been than I expected thus far, but I'm also not going to just lay down and give the RRS to the Land Thieves, either.
- BCS Busters? Not this year. TCU lost. Boise State lost. Hawaii struggled to beat La. Tech in OT. Fresno State made a game of it in Collie Station, but lost. So who will be the new media darling this week? South Florida plays in the Big East, so they don't count. Any suggestions?
- Michigan. Wow. Just wow. No matter how over-rated any of us thought the entire Big 10 was this year, did anyone see them going 0-2 and losing so badly to Oregon? Of course Lloyd Carr is gone at the end of the season, but how much damage has this done to the draft prospects of guys like Henne and Hart? Is Ryan Mallett kicking himself? Will the Wolverines lose their two Texas studs from the 2008 class?
- Will Wisconsin get dinged by the pollsters for barely escaping Nevada the way Texas was for barely escaping Arkie State? Not. Bloody. Likely.
It's a great day to be a Horn. Looking forward to reading all of your comments on yesterday's game.

Wisconsin and Hawaii
I think I was vindicated with my Wisconsin skepticism a little bit last night.
I think my Hawaii love, however, was thoroughly exposed as excessive.
Good thoughts, PHF
Pac 10
I think this is the first season in my adult life that I actually believe the Pac 10 is a decent conference. I still maintain that for most of the past 15 years they've been only a shade better than the WAC from top to bottom, typically fielding only one or two BCS-worthy teams.
But yesterday I saw several games that lead me ot believe the PAC 10 finally has its sh!t together. Washington thoroughly dominated Boise St., Arizona St. trounced Colorado, UCLA took care of a pesky BYU team, and Oregon looked pretty solid against Michigan.
What amazed me most about all of those games is that, in large part, they dominated defensively.
The Trojans have their work cut out for them if they plan to beat all of these teams.
More on OU
Following your down-the-food-chain line of thinking, I'll add that while Tech struggled vs. UTEP, they had no problem with SMU. SMU in turn had no trouble with North Texas. So really, how impressed must we be with ou's opener last week vs. the Mean Green? More than with ours vs. ASU, I grant you, but until Oct. 6, I won't concede that ou is all that.
Colorado
I still think will be much improved.
They beat Colorado St, who gave Cal a tough game yesterday.
The Arizona St game was tough, it was the first time Colorado has played a game in 100+ heat (It was 103 at the 7:15 kickoff). Colorado's defense was on the field too much and it showed in the second half. Also, they had two sure touchdown passes dropped in the first half.
Points 4 and 5
Seem to contradict each other. If the Big XII was strong, then our schedule wouldn't be filled with gimmes (which I don't believe it is).
Actually no
The point was, the Big XII may be better than we thought, but after the TCU game and the performances of other Big XII schools on Saturday, I think our relative strength is now stronger than their relative strength. For everyone except OU that is.
