Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

First Look: TCU Box Score

Yuck. AW's game report later tonight, but this one was ugly. For those wondering what AJ Abrams means to our scoring offense, please see above.

Other notes:

  • JD Lewis' one skill (supposedly) is shooting. Yet, he has never shot well in games for Texas. My math says we're left with zero skills.
  • 14 minutes for Ian Mooney? Sounds from the game thread like he did a couple nice things, but this speaks more to our terrifying lack of depth than anything else.
  • Wangmene and Chapman are doing something wrong; Rick's totally turned off.
  • 21 minutes, 5 points, 5 boards for Gary Johnson. No silver bullet just yet.
  • Great second half from DJ, and terrific overall game from Damion James.
  • We're not using Atchley enough.

I'll leave the rest for AW.

Mooney did GREAT for what is expected of him.

JD was terrible tonight (did I need the tonight?).  Alexi and Chapman were both pretty bad, and Chap threw 2 terrible passes that were intercepted in the few minutes he played (I thought it was 3, but he's only credited with 2 TOs, so).

Gary did some good things and made some mistakes.  He had one particularly good defensive effort in the first half that got me really excited.  Just completely disrupted the shooter in the post without coming even close to fouling.  I'm looking forward to his development in conference play.

I feel like DJ played worse than his stats indicate.  But he did sit for a good portion of the first half with his two quick fouls and he still scored a good portion of our points, so I guess I can't say much at all.

Damion....... was amazing.  There are no words for how good he was.  I had a bad Wisconsin-esque feeling towards the end of the game when we were up by 3 and they were running upcourt — until James had that AMAZING steal running at the ball at 40 miles an hour that made the entire Drum stand up in about 1.3 seconds and we subsequently converted the 3-pointer.  Best play of the night, hands down.

Johnson

only caught the tail end of the game, but he showed some exciting attributes.  Gary Johnson gets low.  He boxes out from the ground up.  He's active, fast, powerful, and maybe the most physically developed of all the Horns.

It'll take him a few games to find the rhythm of the game, but I'm happy to see this guy on the court.

It is possible

that the philosophical difference between the two stems from a conversation they had before McDuff was hired. I imagine it going something like this:

MB: Larry, we need you to come help Dwayne kick some tail.

LM: Well, to do that I'm going to want complete control over the personnel decisions for the linebackers.

MB: Dwayne speaks highly of ya, so I'll give you that control--I give you my word you'll have it.

And scene.

Really, that is about all that would've needed to happen. Mack stays true to his word, even to the detriment of the team and then when it is no longer "binding" says get the f*** out.
