THE WILL MUSCHAMP FILE
Coaching Experience
1995-96- Auburn (Graduate Assistant)
1998- West Georgia (Secondary)
1999- Eastern Kentucky (Secondary)
2000- Valdosta State (Defensive Coordinator)
2001-04- LSU (Linebackers/Defensive Coordinator)
2005- Miami Dolphins (Assistant Head Coach for Defense)
2006- Auburn (Defensive Coordinator)
Notable Accomplishments
As LSU Defensive Coordinator: Helped Nick Saban win the 2003 national title with a defense that ranked first nationally in scoring (11.0 points per game) and total defense (252 yards per game).
As Miami Dolphins Assistant Head Coach for Defense: Helped direct a defense which finished in the Top 10 in the NFL in yards per play, per rush, and per pass. Second in the NFL in sacks with 49.
As Auburn Defensive Coordinator: Auburn finished the season ranked 6th nationally in scoring defense (16.7 points per game), 34th in rush yards per attempt (3.48), and 10th in pass yards per attempt (5.8).
Red Flags?
If we were talking about hiring him as a head coach, there'd be lots to talk about. At age 36, he's relatively young, hasn't done too much recruiting, etc. But the man has been a defensive coordinator in a major conference for five seasons, plus another coaching in the NFL. He's not too green for this job.
The only part of Auburn's defensive profile in 2006 that wasn't well above average was quarterback sacks. The Tigers only accumulated 19 on the season, ranking 93rd nationally.
Would he say yes?
I've never met the man, but if Mack makes him an offer, it'll be tough to turn down. Auburn's a fine destination as is, but Texas is just a slight notch above if you're a coordinator who aspires for a head coaching gig. For a guy like Muschamp who would like his own team one day, there aren't many better final coordinator jobs to have than one in Austin. Money's not an issue. Austin's a wee bit better than Auburn. Let's call it 2:1 he says yes if he's offered the gig.

Are we back to Rent a DC?
and if so, does this mean the "Akina DC Experiment" will rear its head again once Muschamp (or whoever) leaves?

I don't mind rent a DC.
Its allright b/c that means you have good a defense. The guy I really would like to have is the guy from FSU, Mickey Andrews. He and Bobby Bowden are joined at the hip, so it would be extremely difficult to have him be DC here.. I don't think he would ever leave FSU unless he would get a head coaching gig.

Not sure.
Can't wait to hear from BZ. He does want Michigan's OC to replace Davis. I wonder in what ways this is different...

my favorite part of that
is when he asks what things mean. he just can't figure out how to just act normal. he always goes out of his way to prove he's not dhab, which inevitably leads us to figure out that he is dhab. good stuff.

Wonderful news if true
The guy has a great rep. It is a funny coincidence but I have been thinking the last few weeks that he would be a great guy to get for DC. I am not expert on DCs so I do not know if Muschamp is good but he seems good.
Mack has really impressed since the end of the regular season. He has done the following:
- instituted 6am practises for bowl game
- changed a bunch of starters for the bowl game
- reinstituted Not Our Standard
- is going out and getting the best DC money can buy
- won the bowl game over a higher ranked team in an impressive way
- got the D to play well for a half
the next step is for mack to let the new DC have autonomy.
Is Will a LB coach?
If he does well, he will be a real hero around the 40 acres.

I think its pretty much official.
He is going to be at UT. The only thing that is not yet confirmed is what his role will exactly be. I think he is going to be our new DC.

really?
i figured they'd hire him as offensive line coach, but what you're saying is that you think Texas will hire him at the same position he held previously, and at the exact position in which texas has a vacancy, and at the exact position for which he interviewed? interesting theory........Dhab.

What is dhab exactly?
I was asking what his role would be. Would be it Co-DC or full time DC with Akina demoted or gone?

Can Muschamp stop Big 12 offenses?
Kansas, Mizzou, Okla St., Tech.
There's a lot of them. SEC is thought of more as a smash-mouth, slow it down, defensive oriented conference.
How much experience does Muschamp have against teams that run a spread offense?

Duarte reports...
http://blogs.chron.com/longhorns/200...
Auburn's Muschamp could be named new Texas defensive coordinator
Will Muschamp could be named defensive coordinator at Texas as early as tonight, a person close to the program told the Houston Chronicle.
Muschamp, who is currently the defensive coordinator at Auburn, met with coach Mack Brown and the entire staff on Thursday in Austin, the person said on the condition of annonymity.
The Longhorns have a vacancy after co-defensive coordinator/linebackers Larry Mac Duff stepped down Wednesday.
Muschamp is considered a hot commodity right now after his Auburn defense led the Southeastern Conference and ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense this season.
It remains unclear how Brown will divide the coordinator duties. Duane Akina is expected to remain on the staff, but any new hire could take over the play-calling responsibilities.
This would mark the second time in three years the Longhorns have raided an assistant from Auburn to be their defensive coordinator. Gene Chizik was hired away in 2005.
Texas officials had no comment.
In terms of salary, Akina and Mac Duff both earned $300,000 during the 2007 season.
UPDATED {1-3}: The Birmingham (Ala.) News also is reporting that Muschamp interviewed today.
