Lots of fans
At least from TV, the drum looks packed.
They just hit a three to open the game.

Johnson!
gets our first basket. Still down 5-2. Rusty start.

Bad
- We're allowing a ridiculous number of WIDE open threes.
- Rebounding, and their size will get them easy baskets.

Yes same here
I thought it was just me being spoiled by HD.

Production
My picture started out dark, but got better in the second half. I think we were dealing with a camera problem. A problem they have is the glare coming off the polished floor, which shifts from white to yellow as the scoreboard display changes.
Mooney and Wingman already in game
DJ makes a sick step back shot.
Looks like either Barnes is sending a message about giving players time that play hard, or Mooney is actually in the playing rotation.

Augustin off to a great start
He's making his shots. That's always a good thing. His midrange game is elite. That's where the Nash comparisons are legit.

Just like the TCU game
We just don't feel like guarding the three point line. At all. Horrible job of perimeter defense and rotations. We're just going to let them drain threes. Our only hope is if they go cold.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:23 PM CST reply actions
We are playing awful perimeter defense
Why are we playing d like a JV team?
rebounding?
otional i guess in this game for the horns
Johnson
That's exactly what we want. Offensive rebound and put back. 24-21 St. Mary's.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:28 PM CST reply actions
Give up another three.
18 of St. Mary's 27 points are off of threes. This is becoming ridiculous.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:29 PM CST reply actions
Even better news
Either they make their threes, or if they miss them, they get the offensive rebound.
Nice fade away by Wangmene!
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:31 PM CST reply actions
Rebounding
We have a grand total of three of them. Outrebounded by 9.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:33 PM CST reply actions
at least
they're in foul trouble
Another DJ midrange jumper, 10 pts
This is one of his best games in like 2/3 weeks.
DJ three! WOW.

Wingman can't rebound
Now we take him out for Pittman. Lets see if this works out...
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:38 PM CST reply actions
All of a sudden we're looking very good
We're subbing in big bodies like we have (dare I say it) DEPTH in the frontcourt
Horns retake the lead 32-29
on a Damion James THREE!
We're starting to see that we have a lot of options to go to when everyone's having a good shooting game. Abrams isn't though.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:39 PM CST reply actions
Outrebounded 15-5
They just want it more. At the same time, it's leading to them getting fouls.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:41 PM CST reply actions
PITTMAN BLOCK!
Maybe we do have some frontcourt depth behind Connor and Johnson. Dexy, Mooney, and Wingman have all played consistently. Add them with Mason, and that's a 9-deep rotation.

Can't buy a rebound
Not even a FT rebound. Un-freaking-believable.
St. Mary's - 18 rebounds.
Texas - 5 rebounds.

Shooting the ball well
We're shooting 56%, while they're shooting 34%.
We're only up by 4 though because we've given them a bunch of second chances.

James
is playing like a first round draft pick right now
i'm a moron
just now realized that apparently i have ESPN full court. apparently espn gameplan for football season carries over or something.
Another James three
He's really knocking them down lately.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:46 PM CST reply actions
Abrams three!
12-2 offensive rebounding edge for St. Mary's.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:48 PM CST reply actions
Great executed play
Off the ball movement by Augustin and gets the layup.
42-33 Texas. Timeout.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:49 PM CST reply actions
James not hitting FTs
He's scoring, but he's not rebounding much either.
James basically missed 4 FTs (1 was front end of one and one)
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 5:53 PM CST reply actions
james
needs to work on his free throw
Reasons why we're not blowing them out
- 3pt defense. 2/3 of their scoring are from threes. I'd be OK with that if we had a hand in their face, but they are getting WIDE OPEN looks.
- Rebounding. We are being outrebounded 24-9 overall and 12-2 offensive boards.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:00 PM CST reply actions
Looks like Johnson
is the only player that's going to get offensive rebound. Our rebounding is just so atrocious right now.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:14 PM CST reply actions
Abrams....
Nice and under control. Like those close shots much better than the floater.
Back to a 9 pt lead
Barnes must've emphasized rebounding, and we're gradually making up the deficit.
St. Mary's is killing themselves by shooting so many threes. There's a clear matchup advantage inside and they're not exposing it enough.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:23 PM CST reply actions
Boy, James is sweet on the break.
It's nice to give DJ a break and having AJ penetrate and score. St. Mary's seems to be wearing down to me.
Yes
Now they're missing wide open looks. Maybe our strategy was to intentionally let them shoot threes so they don't take advantage of their size advantage.
Now they're missing their threes, and we're pulling away.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:29 PM CST up reply actions
Abrams is finding his shot, thankfully.
And we're rebounding!
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:27 PM CST reply actions
abrams
and johnson are leading the team in rebounds. thats saying something about the rebounding tonight
Those treys sorta skew the normal RBing
Quickness makes a difference on those loose balls.
If I had to guard DJ
I would be soooo frustrated. The man can draw a foul in his sleep.
Big time dunk by Johnson
That was a great play.
When DJ and AJ are both shooting the ball well, how do you stop this team? You have 2 inside beasts in Johnson and James, and you have another guy in Connor who can score very efficiently inside and outside.
I've been all over the team's bad rebounding and 3pt defense in the first half, but this may end up being our best performance since the Tennessee game.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:35 PM CST reply actions
Johnson's coming out game
I thought any offense from him is a bonus. Well, we hit the jackpot. Already 15 pts and 5 boards.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:38 PM CST reply actions
Standing ovation for GJ
well deserved.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:39 PM CST up reply actions
Hear, hear. Just a great addition
and maybe better than we anticipated. Give him a couple of more games and the Horns will have the machine well oiled. When everyone (starters, at least) can score, it really opens up the offensive game.
Crossover DJ AND 1
You can't stop this.
St. Mary's is playing like they give up. Defensive intensity is much lower. We wore them out.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 6:47 PM CST reply actions
Yeah, they're tired - and they have no answers.
Tired legs don't make threes and going inside isn't consistent. And the Horns are maintaining their intensity; that's sure to make Rick happy.
atchley
so according to cbssportsline.com connor atchley made 5/6 FT but has only 4 points. how is that possible?
re. atchley
check yahoo they have it right
hes 4/6 FT with 4 pts
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/boxsco...
Balance
Nice to see 4 guys in double figures, and this time it's Augustin that's approaching 30 pts.
Connor has only attempted 1 shot. I don't like seeing an efficient shooter like him disappearing. Mason has only attempted 1 shot. Now that's a good thing. With Johnson as an added scorer and James sudden ability to shoot outside, Mason doesn't have to shoot that much anymore.
Even though DJ is our leader and soul, it's starting to look like we can have a different hero each night.
FINAL! 81-62 victory. This ended up being a great win. Who thought we were capable of getting a team fatigued? You'd think it would be the other way around.
by goingforthecorner on Jan 5, 2008 7:01 PM CST reply actions
just got back
Great game, except for the shoddy rebounding. Johnson is a huge presence, AJ found his shot, DJ was channeling his inner Nash. Is it just me, or is Mooney one of our better defenders?!?
I looked up at one point in the first half (around 11:00 mark) and St. Mary's was 5/8 3-pointers, Texas was 0/3. Not a great start, but they picked it up after that.
I tried to listen to Rick on the radio
but missed most of it. I did hear him say that DJ told him "...to leave Ian in, that he was doing all the little things right."
Looks like Mooney has earned a niche role the last two games, got 12 minutes this evening. Without the big bench that some teams have, that is exactly what the Horns need, to find solid niche roles. Rick may not need that player for 2 or 3 minutes, but he needs those minutes executed well. Kudos for Ian for stepping up.
BTW James played for 38 minutes and was none the worse for wear. Turning that around from the other team's point of view, you really don't want James on the court for that long.
