Morning Coffee Limps Out Of College Station
Buffs not giving up. Six Colorado coaches are headed to California to make a final plea to Darrell Scott. My sense is that Scott's basically pledged to Texas already, but as noted yesterday, until the pen is on paper, these things are never final. Especially with Scott having an uncle at CU.
Whatever the case, signing day will actually be an exciting event for Longhorn fans across the country. Scott has said from the very beginning he'll make his formal announcement this coming TuesdayWednesday; we'll be huddled around computers as he does.
Rick sends a message. Rick Barnes is Not Happy with the team in general, and with Damion James in particular. Disgusted by James' tentative play in College Station Wednesday night, Barnes noted that "We'll probably make a change there" when asked about Damion's play.
Show host Craig Way asked, "Might not start him?" To which Barnes quipped, "I might not play him."
This is one of the many things I love about Rick Barnes. For starters, forceful, direct, and honest critique of his players' performance is always in bounds. But beyond that, Rick's not just lashing out in blind fury; he often does so with purpose.
Damion James didn't have an off night. He wasn't in up against competition he can't handle. He just didn't show up - he played tentatively. And Rick's message is clear: "Failure we can live with. Playing soft we will not."
A small slice of cheerleader heaven. Making fun of Aggies is one of my favorite hobbies - yours too, I'm sure. But even if they're not as good an academic school as Texas, even if they've been athletically inferior, the one thing we absolutely must give them credit for is cheerleading. No one cheerleads quite as well as Texas A&M. Never forget: for a male Aggie, the highest honor one can receive is becoming a cheerleader.

As good as it gets!
But the peppy Agros got the best of Rick Barnes and Texas on Wednesday after a group of students coordinated a chant for the final minute of the basketball game.
(As an aside, the funniest part of the above article comes at the end, where there's a Very Serious discussion about whether or not the cheer created for Barnes is in violation of the Texas Fightin' Aggie Traditions Penal Code.)
Weak sauce, defined. So Boone Pickens' dream has come to this: Okie State is no better than Iowa State. Pathetic.
Quick Hits. The Lady Horns drop to 3-4 in Big 12 play after a last-second loss to Baylor... Fans who want to attend the men's Saturday home against Baylor need to get tickets quickly... Kyle takes on the weak season that was Ohio State football in 2007... Auburn's athletics department is using YouTube to its advantage.

Consider the governor
Never forget: for a male Aggie, the highest honor one can receive is becoming a cheerleader.
Yep, our present governor was one.
He's the dumbass who put a creationist in charge of the State Board of Education. That's like putting a crack whore in charge of drug policy.
Frakkin' aggies.

Did you hear
about the Aggie that moved to Oklahoma and raised the IQ of both states?

Tenuta
BON-crush Jon Tenuta is taking his A+ defensive playcalling skills to Notre Dame. So maybe games in South Bend won't be so bad next year, PB.

tsk tsk
when defaming a rival for intelligence less than your own, best not to misspell a word in there:
But even if they're not as good an acadmic school as Texas
Obviously just a typo, but looks bad. I hate when I do that.
But maybe we can just admit that A&M has a better typing program than UT? "For Agriculture and Typing, make it Texas A&M University. Helping young minds adjust to the technological wizardry of the 19th century for over 100 years."

Begs the question
Which is worse: the embarrassingly placed typo or that it took until nearly close of business for someone to catch it?
Shame on us all.

I noticed the typo
but since you're the God here, I wouldn't dare correct you.
If Peter thinks it's spelled acadmic, then it's fucking acadmic.

RB Recruiting...
... is really getting interesting at this late stage in the game. Despite landing two of the top RB's in the state of Texas (though one is projected at LB in college), OU is still out there working.
Cedar Grove's Xavier Avery confirmed Wednesday night to Georgia recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner that he will sign with the Dogs next week. Oklahoma had been making a late push for the talented running back.
There were rumors late in 2007 that perhaps Mack was reconsidering passing on Jermie Calhoun, given his dire need for a stud RB. Didn't buy it, still don't buy it. But why is Bobby S still out shopping for a featured back?
I probably posted 20 times I thought the Darrell Scott story was just so much recruiting board hype. Call me cynical, but I've been burned twice by high-profile OOS recruits since I've been posting on Horns sites, so I was - and still am - reluctant to jump on the Darrell Scott bandwagon. I will say, PB, I'll gladly admit to being wrong on this one, and will give you your props if he signs with Texas on Wednesday. But I'm still not there.
On another recruiting note - all Horns fans should be glad Mack never jumped into the Terrelle Pryor sweepstakes. On the same page in Truth & Rumors, Pryor says he probably won't sign in front of a national audience on NSD on ESPN as originally planned. He's now saying he wants to take another visit - this time to Oregon! PB's best buddy at MGoBlog has his usual witty take on it. Is this guy a head case or what?

Speaking of recruiting....
.... man, I can't wait for National Signing Day to get here. Not because I'm excited about finding out where Darrell Scott ends up. But because it officially kicks off the 2009 recruiting season. I just never could get excited about the 2008 recruiting process, partly because there was a dearth of superstar recruits to follow, and most of the interesting next-tier ones were already sewn up by OU before the race even started. 2009, though, looks to be a whole different story.
For one thing, the state of Texas has a bumper crop of talent in 2009. More than I've ever seen since I've been following recruiting. Look who ended up in the initial 2009 Rivals Top 100:
- Jamarkus McFarland - the next in a long line of NFL-bound DT's
- Russell Shepard - the second coming of VY?
- Garrett Gilbert - please God let him follow Drew Brees to Purdue, I don't want this guy to end up at OU or aTm!
- Tyrik Rollison - yet another amazing signal-caller
- Craig Loston - an Aaron Williams type talent at DB
- Mason Walters - will likely anchor our O-Line for four years
- Emory Blake - another receiving star in our back yard
- Ryan Mossakowski - see another Ryan M, formerly of Michigan
- Kevin Brent - SOC DB
- Thomas Ashcraft - What are they feeding these boys in Cedar Hill? Another anchor for the O-Line
- Chris Whaley - will the Darrell Scott signing scare him off?
- Greg Timmons - Great height, great hands, could ocme as a package deal with Loston
- Michael Brockers - a 6'6" DE? That's just not fair...
Texas could feasibly end up with two of the top 5 players in the country. Five of the top 50. Ten of the top 100. IN THE COUNTRY. That would no doubt be the best recruiting class in the country. And the best of the Mack Brown era.
Now THAT, boys and girls, is something to get excited about.

On Timmons
Meant to type "could come as a package deal with Shepard and Loston". Loston is Shepard's cousin and Timmons' teammate at Aldine Eisenhower. Just nailing down these three guys alone would seal a top-5 class.
