#11 Horns Topple Third Top Ten Opponent
Wow! That is certainly the first word that comes to mind as I return from the Erwin Center. For those of you who missed it, the #11 Horns (20-4, 7-2) played their most balanced game of the season, a 72-69 win over #3 Kansas, and put even more polish on what is already a striking resume.
I’m going to forgo the usual recap format and write just a few points about each of the six major contributors. Why? Number one, because I’m exhausted and number two, because no one player was responsible for this win. This was a fabulous team effort. The Horns played outstanding team defense in the second half, passed the ball well in the half-court, limited Kansas to just six transition points, and crashed the glass so well in the second half that they actually won the battle on the boards, 36-35, after being outrebounded by ten in the first twenty minutes.
Damion James: 14 points (4-of-8 field goals), 4-for-4 from the line, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 assists in 23 minutes.
James was the difference between the first half and the second. James picked up his second foul just three minutes into the game and was forced to sit the rest of the half. Despite shooting lights out from three, Texas got killed on the glass, gave up a tremendous amount of second looks, and headed to the locker room down four points, 42-38. With James on the floor in the second half, the Horns had a fighting chance on the boards. DaMo had all but two of his points and all of his rebounds in the second half and also helped shut down the Kansas bigs despite being undersized. If James plays his normal 30+ minutes, we’d be looking at 20+ points and 20+ rebounds. He was that good tonight.
AJ Abrams: 14 points (5-of-13 field goals), 2-of-8 from three, three rebounds, a block, a steal, and an assist in 40 minutes.
BON reader ‘jimmer’ said it best on the way home from the Drum, "AJ is all heart." With Damion on the bench and DJ having another tough night in the lane, Abrams stepped up big time in the first half. His 10 points in the first 12 minutes of the game gave the Horns the early lead and got the 16k in attendance excited and on their feet. But his biggest play of the night came on the defensive end and shouldn’t go unmentioned. With 58 seconds left in the game, Kansas kicked the ball to a wide open Brandon Rush in the corner for a game tying three-pointer. Somehow 5-10 AJ closed out on 6-6 Rush and managed to block his shot. Definitely the defensive play of the game.
Justin Mason: 9 points (3-of-8 field goals), 3-of-6 FTs, eight rebounds, two assists, and zero turnovers in 36 minutes.
Texas scored 11 second chance points in the second half in large part to the offensive rebounding of Mason and James. Five of his eight boards came on the offensive end. Mason was also outstanding on defense. He moved his feet well and kept the KU guards in front of him as well as he possibly could. Mason also played point guard for about half the first half and ran the offense well. He didn’t panic when he picked up his dribble; he didn’t lower his head and drive recklessly into the paint; and he didn’t slip and fall on every change of direction. Mason played in control and really helped the Horns tremendously on both ends.
Connor Atchley: 16 points (6-of-6 field goals), 4-of-4 from three, four rebounds, four blocks, two assists, and one turnover in 29 minutes.
In the preview, I noted that I didn’t think Texas had very many advantages in the match ups with KU. I forgot about one: Connor on the perimeter knocking down three-pointers. Atchley’s four three pointers were absolutely crucial to our first half success. He was also very good on the defensive side. Connor is one of the best shot blockers in the Big XII and showed his skills again tonight. He has really improved his timing and his help defense across the back line. I’d guess that all four of his blocks came tonight when he left his man and helped across the lane.
DJ Augustin: 10 points (1-for-13 field goals), 8-of-10 FTs, two rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one turnover in 40 minutes.
It is easy to look at 1-for-13 and say that DJ played a bad game, but I don’t believe that is the case. He had a tough first half as he once again got too deep into the lane and was forced into tough shots over taller defenders, but his second half was much better. He ran the half-court offense efficiently and found Texas bigs for a couple of easy looks in the second half off his own drives. His penetration also caused the defense to collapse and allowed James and Mason some space for offensive rebounds. Last, five assists to just one turnover in a full game against the opportunistic KU guards is very, very good. Even though his jumper and drives weren’t falling, DJ contributed to the win in other ways.
Gary Johnson: 7 points (2-of-5 field goals), 3-of-6 FTs, three rebounds, an assist, and four turnovers in 19 minutes.
GJ is the second Longhorn where the stats don’t tell the full story. Gary provided the Horns with an inside presence, especially in the first half with Damion on the bench, and was active on the glass and with his post defense. He is still learning and missed some defensive assignments. Overall, though, he played really hard and helped get Arthur and Kahn into foul trouble.
This is a very satisfying win. The Horns just beat the team that I thought was the best in the country. Take nothing away from Kansas. They remain a deep, talented, and well-coached team that may not lose again this regular season and will be tough out for anyone come tournament time. But, tonight, Texas was the better team and Coach Barnes and the Longhorns deserve all the praise. The Horns played a complete and physical game, which they won with defense and rebounding in the second half. Imagine that, the Horns won with defense and rebounding. It is worth noting again: this team just keeps improving. Well done Horns.

just wanted to say congratulations...
you guys are a very good basketball team, a legitimate top 10 team IMO, and i hope we are far way come march in the brackets.
you guys were the better team tonight. put us on a neutral floor, and i think we win, but i am (only slightly) biased so who knows.
in any case, congratulations for the win. it was an awesome game to watch, one of the best games of the year by far, IMO. tremendous from start to finish, although the fast-paced first half was >>> than the ref-dominated second half IMO.
congratulations...

Very, very lame, KU
Now we'll have to make T-shirts with an upside-down buzzard on them for the Big XII tourney...
It had to come to this...

yea, i hate the whole upside-down
longhorns hand symbol, but it fit so i put it up.
it isnt exactly the most creative thing in the entire world.
as a fanbase, i just hope we never reach the point of the wildcats, who wore upside-down longhorn t-shirts to a KU-KSU game.
that is when it extends too far, just like muck fizzou shirts worn by KU students to game NOT against mizzou.

I agree with Barnes
Despite a horrible shooting night by DJ, Barnes didn't criticize him. He once again stated that DJ was still helping the team win in other ways.
He missed a lot of shots, but that beats the hell out of turning the ball over against an explosive Kansas team. His misses allowed James and Mason to get the offensive rebounds and put backs.
James/Mason wouldn't be able to recycle trash if there wasn't garbage to begin with. DJ shot up some excellent garbage tonight.

Good summary
Well written summary, couldn't have said it better myself. Obviously you're never confident playing a team the caliber of Texas on the road, but I would have never expected to lose on account of Texas' balance and toughness.

A different perspective
Damion, Connor, and Mason were clearly the MVPs last night. These guys (plus Gary) provided most of the great D and rebounding that won the game for the horns. the horns held the great KU offense to less than 70 points! Amazing!
Most fans probably don't notice/realize it but the only reason that UT could play man to man D against KU is the great shot blocking support provided by Connor and Damion. Otherwise KU would just post up Augustin or Abrams whenever the horns play man. When Self tried to exploit the little guys in the post, their big brothers came over and swatted the shots away.
Abrams and Augustin were a combined 6 for 26. It is amazing that the horns could win with these guys going 6 for 26. A & A are not on the floor because they are good at rebounding, defending, or even passing. In Barnes world, their main contribution is to score (and ball handling by Augustin).
It is way past time for Augustin to become a we first player, not a me first player. Point guards need to be pass first, shoot second guys. Augustin is not. His selfishness has held back the development of the other players. At the end of the game, when his teammates were celebrating the great victory, Augustin was looking totally pissed off. WTF?!
My criticism is not about Augustin having a poor night shooting, that just proves he is human. Augustin is great at penetrating and dribbling (and usually great at finishing, mid range shooting and 3 point shooting) but he is playing point guard.
Point guards need to dish the ball after penetrating much more than Augustin does. When point guards run the pick and roll, they need to be able to get the ball to the big man cutting to the bucket. Augustin does this rarely. Augustin could be getting a lot of assists to big men for easy shots in the paint but most of his assists are on long shots now.
On offense, Augustin needs to be provide help to his teammates (just like they help him on D). The KU game showed that when the horns give the other guys (like Connor, Damion, and Gary) a chance and run some plays for them, they can deliver (even against the very best competition).
Basketball is a team sport. We need to stop calling Augustin the best point guard in the NCAA until it is true. We need to stop saying this team is all about the guards (i.e. Augustin and Abrams). The focus needs to be on team.
This team can jump up another level if:
- Augustin will become much more assist oriented (especially on his penetrations and pick and roll plays)
- the horns pass the ball much more rather than so much dribbling by Augustin
- Barnes will continue to diversify the offense (we saw some of the first glimpses of this last night).
I also think the horns would benefit on O and zone D if they got Dex on the floor. I have to admit that it is unlikely that Dex has the speed to provide the help support that is required for the horns to play man to man D with Augustin and Abrams on the floor. If the horns are playing a team that can't shoot well outside (i.e. the horns can play zone on them), then Dex should get some minutes.
Last, can Barnes figure out some plays where Damion can attack the rim? It is great that he can shoot outside but let us exploit his athleticism on O.

You should try and get your glass half-full
considering we beat the best team in the country on a DJ off-night.
DJ made some great interior passes last night. If his shots were falling also, you wouldn't mention anything.
Gary is literally improving each minute he is on the floor and we will continue to increase his chances to receive the ball inside. AJ has made some nice entry passes.
It was pretty obvious to me last night that Dex was too slow in the zone to play with Kansas, he might be able to succeed with other teams, but Kansas passes the ball so well that Dex just gets turned around.
Damion attacks the rim on the offensive boards. I do agree more could be done in this department.

Seriously
How good was Kansas' passing when Texas was in the zone? They were putting on a clinic not holding on to the ball too long, making sharp, crisp passes. The Texas players were running all over the place trying to keep up. As you said, Dex was way too slow to keep up with that last night, especially with how Kansas was using the high post.
A quick observation because, like Kafka, I'm obsessed with criticizing Barnes' offense. I loved the offensive set Barnes used twice in the second half where Connor got it at the high post, then DJ cut back door, and the first time down AJ got open off a Mason screen for a jumper. The next time down Mason cut off the screen and got fouled (I think that was the one where he got clobbered?). Awesome, awesome stuff. It seems like Barnes will come up with these great sets that I've rarely seen. He'll use them a few times in a couple of games, and then they'll disappear for the rest of the season, and it's back to pick and roll offense. I wish he would consistently use these plays, mixing them up. Anybody else notice this as a trend?
Amazing win overall. Last night should be a great confidence booster for James and Mason, who were both struggling some.

Half full
No offense but don't you think it is unnecessarily provocative to tell me I need to improve my attitude? If you disagree with something I say, just disagree with the specific comment, OK?
I didn't see a lot of great passing by Augustin last night (the same as most nights), especially considering he has the ball so much. IIRC, he had 5 assists. Most of his assists are to guys shooting a long way from the bucket. Do you actually think Augustin dishes well after penetrating the lane? How about passing to big men rolling to the bucket after a screen and roll play? It is very seldom that we see either of these things occur.
Again, it is unnecessarily provocative to speculate on what I might have said had Augustin shot better. Having said that, since I have been a consistent critic of Augustin's passing, you are probably wrong. BTW, I specifically did not criticize Augustin's shooting performance and have never criticized his shooting performance (IIRC).
My main point about Augustin is that it is absurd to call Augustin the best point guard in the nation when he does not pass well and is a shoot first guy. Point guards are all about passing and making their teammates better. Augustin can be a great penetrator, finisher, mid range shooter, and 3 point shooter but he cannot be considered a good point guard until he is a good passer.
My comments about playing Dex in a zone pertained to future games. Your comments about Dex playing against KU were not really relevant to my comments about Dex, right? Just making sure.
You said:
"...we will continue to increase his (i.e. Gary) chances to receive the ball inside. AJ has made some nice entry passes.".
Who is we? Certainly not you, right? How do you know UT will continue to increase Gary's chances to receive the ball inside? Is it just your guess or do you have some inside knowledge?

Great Points!!
None taken.
Two passes off the top of my head, one to Chap in the first half who missed it and the other to Connor who slammed it home - this was a pretty big play in the game. So, my point was that I saw improvement in DJ last night and you saw someone pouting, I guess. I will say this, and I am certain you have said things similar...Augustin is most likely a great passer he just has not chosen to pass the ball at all times.
Since you posted the Dex comments in the recap for Kansas I assumed you were referring to the Kansas game and all future games. That would make sense.
We is actually the Horns bball team and myself as a fan. Obviously it is my opinion that we will get the ball inside, just like you state your opinion in your commments. I think that you will see it to be true though.
I apologize for any unnecessary provocation you may have felt. In the future I will try and provoke you only when extremely necessary.

My Thoughts
I totally agree with everything you wrote in your first three paragraphs but have a few disagreements beginning with the fourth one.
DJ is the best point guard in the country. He has certainly had some tough games recently but I'll stand by that statement. If not DJ, then who?
Also, I'm not sure you can say that DJ is a me first player simply because he is a scoring point guard. Coming into this season, who did you think was going to score? This was always going to be a guard driven team that will go be limited in March by the level of season long development of their bigs. That was true in October and is true now.
We know what we are going to get from AJ and DJ, that is why the entire offense is built around those two. Your criticism and mine should be aimed at Barnes and not at DJ. Augustin is simply running Barnes' plays. Most of our offensive sets are AJ running off multiple baseline screens to get open in the corner or off a curl. And if those screens don't work, then we go high pick and roll and try to get DJ into the lane.
Up until the last few games, DJ has gotten into the lane and finished. Teams are starting to adjust and its time for DJ to adjust to the changing defenses. And he has to some extent already. 22 assists to 5 turnovers in the last four games is not too shabby. But to call him a selfish player, a me first player, and one who has limited the development of other players is simply not true.
I agree with a lot of your points at the end as well. Barnes does need to get the ball to Damion going to the basket and continue to work on diversifying the offense. We are never going to have a Bobby Knight style motion offense. Barnes' offenses are built around individual players making plays and not on complex sets. That is who he is. But, believe me, I'd like to see more as well.
As far as Dex, he is not there yet. When the Horns went zone in the first half with Dex in the game, Kansas scored on every possession. It wasn't even difficult. They really did put on a clinic against our 2-3. Not all of that is on Dex, but his inability to move laterally in man or zone is his biggest limitation. I'm pulling for him and expect improvement next year, but he is not there this year and is a total defensive liability.
