Hope Springs Eternal
A schmaltzy headline? No question about it.
But I am sincere when I say that with the arrival of spring practice this Friday I find myself excited, optimistic, renewed. The slate is wiped clean - for players, for teams, for fans. With spring practice, we begin to look forward again as losses from the departed season finally drift from our present conscious to become a part of history.
With the clean slate, we think less of the loss to Texas A&M and more of what a Muckelroy-Norton-Kindle linebacking trio might look like anchoring Will Muschamp's defense. We turn our attention to the future of John Chiles. We daydream about the next great Texas tailback. And we start obsessing over 16 and 17 year old kids who might come to play for Texas in the fall of 2009.
People who aren't from where we're from sometimes ask me why I love college football as completely as I do. This is why. Like all team sports, college football starts fresh each season. And like all team sports, there are year round stories to follow, trends to track, and developing players upon which we can speculate. But more than any other popular sport in America, there's as much drama in the speculation and anticipation as there is in the performance.
So this Friday, we start anew. We grab what we want to remember from the previous season, build on what we think we've added, and start to formulate theories of how it all could end in championship.
Long live sports. And in particular, long live college football.

Regardless
UT basketball should still be the dominate storyline for BONers and all UT fans.
Like the Chargers' fan said many times, this is a special team, and it shouldn't be overlooked by the football offseason and recruiting nonsense.
It's basketball season, dammit!

No worries there
But this is one of the things I love about college football. It's round-the-calendar fun. And each spring, I get excited for next year's team. There's nothing like it.
AW and I love hoops as much as football though, so don't worry too much.
Disagree with
Basketball being as big, or exciting as "Longhorn Football." Football is a thought process 365. Basketball is starting to capture my attention more and more, but it will always be FOOTBALL by a wide margin.
agree on it being a mistake

hehe
Theres time for both, no doubt. I just hope to see the day when UT fans realize that their basketball program right now is as good, and arguably better, than the football program. That doesnt change history, but for the time being, there's just so much to be excited about and proud of.
I believe UT fans have it in them to rally behind the hoops team just as much as the football team. I know 'we're texas' and love football first (myself included), but with no football till the fall and baseball more boring than ever, I feel even mild sports enthusiasts should be able to get behind a program as consistently successful and squeaky clean like the one we have.
I love the coverage AW provides during the season for sure. Top notch.

I cant wait for that first game....
The build up to the first game is almost more exciting then the actual game itself because of the possibilities to any team, especcially the Longhorns! Oh man i cant wait
Spring football
this is kinda random but I talked to somebody closely acquainted with Antwan Cobb today, word is he may not be ready (healed) for the spring game, but he is expected to be ready to go by the time the season starts. That's good news IMO because he was looking good last season.
you know what spring football means, right?
Texas Rangers spring training is right around the corner.
VERY well put, PB
Almost brought a tear to my eye. :)
