Morning Coffee Is Glowing

One more time, all together. Kirk Bohls is talking #1 seed, but fails to mention to real prize - an assignment to Houston. Being #1 instead of #2 in Charlotte, Detroit, or Phoenix wouldn't be much of an advantage; being the #1 or #2 in Houston... different story. Just keep that in mind as we get ahead of ourselves throughout the rest of the season.

(And by the way, #2 in Houston is exactly where we're slotted on Joe Lunardi's board. Let's stay hot.)

Movin' on up. Texas boosted its statistical profile with last night's throttling of A&M, jumping up five spots to #13 in Ken Pomeroy's pythagorean rankings. Texas' 54.2 eFG% helped it reclaim the top spot in offensive efficiency in the country, but the real story was on defense, where Texas harassed A&M into a woeful 30.9 eFG%. It was, overall, Texas' best defensive effort of the season since blowout wins over lowly UC Davis and Arkansas-Monticello. And we've always known this team could score; now we're seeing it defend. That gives me hope that a Final Four run is at least a possibility.

Mark Turgeon is (still) a sissy. You may recall A&M coach Mark Turgeon's whiny comments earlier this season after his team lost three games in a row. Asked last night if he's concerned about his team's current two-game losing streak, Turgeon defensively whined, "Oh, come on. We whipped them. They whipped us. Maybe we'll play 'em again."

As with his earlier comments, it's not so much that what he's saying is inaccurate, but the comments regularly reflect an insecurity I'd prefer not see in a coach. Recall, for example, Mack Brown's defensive remarks following the string of summer arrests this past offseason. Though he was right - bad apples shouldn't spoil the whole barrel - it was the wrong tone, wrong message, wrong time. That's how Turgeon sounds to me. At a time when his team needs to hear how much it needs to improve to get to the NCAAs, he's defending them, seeking validation.

Garrett Gilbert to have surgery on torn labrum. The word from Lake Travis is that Garrett Gilbert has a torn labrum which will require surgery. Without knowing the type of labrum tear Gilbert suffered, we can't speculate with certainty on his rehabilitation.

Here's what we know. Labrum tears are devastating for baseball pitchers, but the prognosis is much better for quarterbacks. You may remember Drew Brees' dislocating his shoulder in his penultimate game as a Charger in 2005, tearing his labrum in the process. He underwent surgery and four months of rehab, but made a full recovery and enjoyed a Pro Bowl season in New Orleans in 2006.

Though the prognosis is good for quarterbacks with labrum tears, there are two important caveats:

(1) If a player tries to return from this injury to quickly, it can have a "cascading" effect; as the quarterback compensates for his injured shoulder by altering his mechanics, he can inadvertently create other injury problems. The key is to take rehab slowly and surely. No rushing back.

(2) The biggest worry with labrum injuries is that they can become a recurring problem. A full recovery is probable, if not certain, but the quarterback is more vulnerable to injury upon return.

If I'm Mack Brown, I might reconsider my decision to offer Russell Shepard only as an Athlete. Of course, I'd have him reconsider even if Gilbert were 100% healthy, too.

Consistency demands it... We were adament last season that Kevin Durant had to be the National Player of the Year. So I'm with TB on Michael Beasley: he's your '07-08 POY. The ridiculous freshman dropped 40 and 17 this past Saturday over Missouri to get K-State back in the win column. After Texas hosts Oklahoma this Saturday, the team will travel to Manhattan for its third straight Big Monday game. Managing Michael Beasley's going to be quite a task, especially in his home building.

Beasley POY

He deserves it for sure. Hopefully the voters are smart enough to not get hung up on having a freshman win it two years in a row.

Seeds

If Texas lands a #1 seed, we would be a shoe in for the south regional as well, right?  Irregardless of who else gets #1 bids.

Our only way to drop out of the south should be if we drop to #3 or less, or am I missing something?

Memphis

Is, right now, looking like the tournament's overall top seed. The consensus seems to be that their natural region slot would be Houston.

I just Google mapped it, though, and Memphis is 634 miles from Charlotte, 568 from Houston - not much of a difference. I suppose the committee could ship Memphis to Charlotte and slot Texas to Houston. We're a long way from that, though.

Huge game this Saturday between Memphis and Tennessee.

And of course, Texas would need to remain hot down the stretch.

Ahh

I didnt know they did it first come first serve as overall rankings.

I guess I thought it was done as a group, but I guess it makes more sense to do overall.

KSU will go a long way in deciding if #1 is a possibility at all.  Im just hoping for the south regional, #1 or #2 is fine with me.

Duke

Memphis would probably only go to Charlotte if Duke ends up not being a #1 cause you know the committee will put Duke in Carolina.  So let's hope for a) a solid finish and the #2 in Houston or b) Duke completely collapses, we win out and the committee puts Memphis and Duke in Charlotte as 1 and 2 and we go to Houston as the 1.

Duke AND North Carolina

Both teams in NC would have to go cold down the stretch to put Memphis in Charlotte.  UNC is #3 and Duke is #5, both legitimate #1-seed contenders today.

UNC has a tough stretch this week, with games at NC St and versus WF before they close the season at Duke.

Duke plays at Miami this week, and also play at NC St before hosting UNC for their final game.

It will take two losses by both these teams down the stretch (go Wolfpack) combined with UT running the table to grab a #1-seed that pushes the both the NC teams out of Charlotte.

BOD giveth, and BOD taketh away, but

Bod definitely knows that irregardless is not a word.

by DogTown on Feb 19, 2008 11:03 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Actually,

Not only is it a word, but it's my favorite word.

http://dictionary.reference.com/sear...

I adore the usage note there:

Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

by Meekrob on Feb 19, 2008 11:24 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

so...

it's really more of a "word" than a word.  one of those "words" that people use so much that they sort of have to be recognized as words, but with the giant caveat that you sound dumb if you use them because, you know, they don't make any damn sense.

by billyzane on Feb 19, 2008 11:37 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Well,

It's recognized as slang, for use in casual speaking and writing.  I assume the comments on a sports blog is considered casual.  This just shows that it has a recognized spelling, pronunciation, and definition.  I'd say that constitutes being a word.

by Meekrob on Feb 19, 2008 11:57 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Which is why

I endeavor to use it at every opportunity that I get.

For the more you use it, the more right it becomes,  irregardless of others opinions of it.

Wikipedia:

The term "irregardless" has begun to move towards acceptance because incorrect words or grammatical conventions are absorbed by the English language based on common usage. It is apparent that the word originated from regional deviations and was subsequently re-introduced to the wider English-speaking community, and thus the use of the term should be avoided if one takes the position that this word should not enter common use.

I encourage everyone to take up the fight.  The tyranny of regardless will last no longer, it shall be replaced.  Like one's appendix, tonsils or wisdom teeth, I seek to remove it at every given opportunity!

Note: I actually have my original appendix, tonsils, and wisdom teeth.  But if those cheeky bastards take just one step out of line...

My late mother was a great proponent

of the word "irregardless." In my smart-ass teens and twenties, I chastised her mercilessly for using it. I still sorta disparage the word, but for love and respect, get a kick out of hearing it today.

I'll never forget ol' what's-his-name.

If the folks at Barking Carnival were Mack Brown, they'd get down on their hands and knees begging Russell Shepard to run the zone-read in their offense, over and over and over again.

Who do we have to worry about going pro?

Other than DJ (who prior to this game looked a little iffy) will anyone else try to make the jump to the NBA?

James might...

Besides that, we should be pretty safe.

Well, besides the loss of Mooney and Lewis' minutes.

Ahem.

Was anyone else disappointed when Harrison Smith came in that he didnt just drain a three to up his Pomeroy stats?

Gilbert's Shoulder - "Slap Lesion"
The info I've received is that Gilbert has sustained a "slap lesion" in his throwing shoulder.  Apparently, this is the lesser of the two types of injuries that can affect the labrum.  This info was apparently confirmed by Gilbert's dad.

Doctors familiar with the injury say that it is easy to fix through arthro and that most likely Gilbert would be ready to go by 7-on-7's this summer.

Also corroborating this report is that the injury was sustained in September (which we all knew about) and Gilbert was able to still pass for over 4,000 yards.  Guys with major injuries to their shoulder cannot do this, but the slap lesion is minor enough to be able to still be productive.

Houston

Let me bump up a thread from an earlier article regarding the relative advantage of a Houston regional.

So far, there have been two advantages for Houston presented (by Boddicker). One is the shorter travel distance and the other is more fan support.

I have questioned travel distance as a factor, since a travel day is a travel day. I recognize that a drive to Houston is an easier trip than a flight to Phoenix, but given two or three days to recover, how could that be much of a factor? If you were crossing multiple time zones or going into a high altitude city like Denver, there could be a distance factor, but that does not apply here.

As to fan support, I need to hear just how this is supposed to make a difference. Are we looking at the motivation of the players? Influence on refs? Psychic energy? Remember that this game will be in the Elite Eight round and the teams should be plenty psyched up and the refs should be the best. And despite travel time, I expect that quite a few Memphis fans will find their way to Houston.

Now on the other side of the equation we have the seed of the opponent. Matchups aside, there are some pretty compelling statistics that would indicate that your team's WORST chance of victory would be against the tournament's overall #1 seed. And given a choice between being the #2 seed in the regional against the top #1 and being a #1 seed elsewhere, the odds are even more stacked.

Now if you say that the goal is win the whole thing, then it matters less whether we encounter the top #1 in the regionals or in the finals. But if we are discussing the best chance to reach the Final Four, then I still think weaker competition matters more than distance.

by Caradoc on Feb 19, 2008 11:32 AM CST   0 recs

i agree somewhat

about the competition being more important than the location, but you remember San Antonio during our Final 4 run?  We played Michigan State and UConn and the Alamodome was like 75% burnt orange.  that's got to count for something.

by billyzane on Feb 19, 2008 11:40 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

You needed to be at the South Regional in 2003

When 70-80% of the stands were burnt orange. Motivation is more than just trying hard; there's feeding off a crowd's energy. The Alamodome was ROCKING for Texas, and I have no doubt it helped. I have a lot of confidence playing in Houston could be a big boost. It's not the most important factor in whether we win, but the kids feed off it.

It's one thing to say the players shouldn't be affected by a crowds, but in reality, crowds do have effects. On both the team being cheered and the opponents.

--PB--

by PB @ BON on Feb 19, 2008 2:56 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Actually, I was there...

..for the first game, and there is no doubt that the crowd was loud and enthusiastic. I almost lost my voice.

But I still wonder just how the crowd affects the team and how you would be able to tell when it does. It could be that any correlation is due to the impact on the crowd of how the players perform, rather than the reverse. Do screaming fans help you jump higher, shoot more accurately, rebound more aggressively? Maybe so, for players who are not already playing as well as they can.

However, I still think the main effect of crowd noise is on inferior refs, who get intimidated. The response they get to calls against the home team makes them self-conscious, indecisive, and ultimately homers. This should not be a factor in an NCAA regional.

Finally, on the other hand there is the indisputable fact that when you play a better team you are more likely to lose. It would take a heap of intangibles to overcome a significant deficit in skill, depth, and preparation.

So let's just hope that Texas wins out, Memphis stumbles, and we come out as the #1 in Houston.

Who's better KD or Beasley?

There are some people who think that Beasley is just as good as Durant was and maybe even better. I, personally, think that it is totally wrong. KD was one of the greatest college players I have seen in the last 10-15 years. Beasley is good and should be POY but KD, at times, last year was just too good for the college game. Beasley, just had, his man amongst boys moment last year while KD had several.

Don't get me wrong, Beasley is good, but KD was on another level and unstoppable and unguardable at times. He made the game seem so easy and was so good.

Maybe, it is the Longhorn bias in me that KD is way better than Beasley but Durant could have been a candidate for ESPN's 25 greatest players of all time list.

Turgeon

He's right.  The series was equally split.  He said they whipped us.  He's not really defending his team.  He's just pointing out the facts.

Scary surgery
  1. Let's hope for his sake that Gilbert's surgery and recovery runs without any hiccups.
  1. Beasley is a beast, and with his right hand man, Bill Walker, he's even scarier.  KSU will bust many a bracket in March.
  1. Way to work "penultimate" into your notes.

by Kool Hand on Feb 20, 2008 1:15 AM CST   0 recs

And KSU just lost to Nebraska

They're not a very good road team.
