Horns Dominate Sooners, Sit Atop Conference

Game Recap: The #7 Texas Longhorns (23-4, 10-2) grabbed first place in the Big 12 after a 62-45 win over the hated Oklahoma Sooners. The Horns have now won seven straight games and stand a full game above Kansas (losers in Stillwater this afternoon) for the Big XII lead. The blowout win was also a 40 minute example of how far this team has come under Coach Barnes this season. Texas has evolved from a guard and perimeter dependent offensive team who hoped to just outscore their opponents to a balanced, defensively solid ball club that can score and win in a multitude of ways.

The Horns won this one with defense and rebounding and in the four minutes on each side of halftime. Texas was up just 21-17 with four minutes in the first half, despite holding the Sooners to under 25% shooting from the floor. AJ Abrams was ice cold while Connor Atchley and Gary Johnson were largely invisible after picking up two fouls each. However, Texas has surprisingly developed into a deep ball club. DJ Augustin began to attack the basket late in the first half after Damion James had led the scoring with mid-range and three-point jumpers earlier. Texas closed the first half on an 11-4 run and opened the second half with a quick 6-0 run to put the game away. The Longhorns led by as many as 24 points at 58-34 with just five minutes left, before OU cut into the lead slightly by finally making some outside jumpers.

Augustin continued his impressive play with a strong second half attacking the rim and distributing the basketball off the drive. Atchley and Johnson rebounded in the second half with strong minutes and Abrams finally got on the board with five second half points.

Alexis Wangmene may have also played his most complete game as a Longhorn. Wingman had five points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and played physical and effective post defense in his 16 minutes. Earlier in the year, this team would have struggled mightily with Connor and Johnson on the bench in foul trouble and AJ cold from the outside. Today, they simply did not. Wingman, Chapman, and even Dexter Pittman all provided valuable minutes off the bench as the Horns cruised to the top of the conference.

The outcome was: More Dominating than Expected. With Longar Longar back in the OU lineup, Blake Griffin in crimson and cream, and the possibility of the Horns looking ahead to Monday nights’ match-up with Kansas State, I expected a much closer game. Despite Texas shooting just 37% from the floor and a horrible 10% from behind the arc, this game wasn’t even close, and the Texas defense and depth were the reasons. OU shot an embarrassing 26% from the floor and was held to a season low in points. Additionally, Texas outrebounded the Sooners 44-40 for the game despite the fact that OU picked up five offensive rebounds on their first possession.

I haven’t heard the exact quote about rivalries but many of you have mentioned it: DJ said something like, "We don’t consider A&M or OU our rivals. We consider Kansas to be our top rival." Facts don’t lie: Texas has now won five straight against OU and 10 of the last 13.

Stat of the Game: Points in the paint: Texas 32, OU 14. Ouch! That is incredible considering the make-up of both teams. Gary Johnson has definitely evolved as Texas’ best low post scorer, but the offensive arsenal extends much deeper these days. WingMan scored a couple of times in the paint, Connor can score with his back to the basket, James and Mason are excellent slashers, and DJ has significantly improved his decision making of when to finish and when to dish off his drives to the hoop. This team no longer lives and dies with the three-pointer and that is a critical improvement and a testament to the player development of Coach Barnes.

The Offensive MVP was: DJ Augustin. For the second game in a row, DJ was terrific. In fact, he was so good, he was able to sit for a good four minutes in the second half as the game was well in hand. Numbers: 19 points, (8-for-14 field goals, 1-of-3 threes, 2-for-2 FTs), four rebounds, three assists, and two turnovers in 35 minutes. His assist total would have been even higher had Chapman and James converted on a couple of nice dishes. DJ’s ability to beat his man off the dribble and get into the lane was the biggest reason for the 'Horns 11-point halftime lead.

The Defensive MVP was: Everyone. Connor had two blocks, as did James and Wingman. Chapman added another block off the bench. AJ had three steals and played solid perimeter defense all game long. Johnson battled on the low blocks even though he was giving up three or four inches in height to Griffin and Longar. All in all, Texas rotated well, fronted well, denied passing lanes well... they did everything well on defense, no matter who was on the floor.

As mentioned above, OU shot 26% for the game. That doesn’t happen because of a single defender. This was a team effort, and a dominating one at that.

The Freshman Evaluation tonight was: Solid. Wingman played his best game as a Longhorn. While his offensive moves are still not sharp, he plays solid defense, rebounds, screens, hustles, and knocks down his free throws. Coach Barnes couldn’t have asked for much more from him this afternoon.

Clint Chapman played just five minutes and got muscled around some on both ends but he battled hard and is definitely benefiting each time he sees the floor. He obviously needs time in the weight room and more practice time. However, the skills and upside remain apparent. If James turns pro, the continued development of Chapman and the return of Matt Hill will go a long way to determining how deep and eventually how good this Texas team will be next season.

Three Things: (1) Texas won without AJ’s scoring. Abrams was just 2-of-11 from the field (0-of-6 from three) and scored just five points in 36 minutes. You know what? It didn’t matter. Augustin, James, and the Texas bench carried the load on offense and everyone stepped up their game on the other end. Fran Frachilla likes to talk about how Texas is so much better when AJ is knocking down shots. While this is true, the Longhorns proved that they can still beat good ball clubs even when AJ is not hot.

(2) Damion James with another double-double. I gave the offensive MVP nod to DJ. It could have just as easily gone DaMo’s way. Damion scored 13 points and grabbed 11 boards for his 12th double-double of the season. His mid-range jumper off a dribble or two has become a thing of beauty and due to his leaping ability, completely unblockable. James has also become a rebounding machine, and now has eight or more boards in each of the last seven Texas games, all Longhorn victories.

(3) An outright Big XII title is on the line in Manhattan. The Horns now stand alone at the top of the conference standings at 10-2. With KU’s surprising loss in Stillwater, the Jayhawks fall a game back at 9-3. Kansas State is 8-3, with a game at Baylor tonight. If the Horns win at Kansas State on Monday, which will be very difficult, to say the least, they would have a very good chance to win out, win the Big XII outright at 14-2, and be in fantastic position for a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. I said before the season that 12-4 would be a solid conference run. Well, we are at least a full game ahead of that now. A conference title is within reach.

Amazing performance by Texas

Sorry Oklahoma couldn't be a better opponent today.

KSU Monday

Right after the ISU game I posted that if UT could win five straight against the five they were staring at they would go deep in the NCAA's.  Four down, one to go.

K State will not be easy at all.  The Wildcats are 14-1 at home this season, and 6-0 at home in Big XII play - exactly the same marks as the Longhorns thus far.

Winning on the road in the Big XII is not easy.  UT is the only squad with a winning record (4-2) on the road in conference play.  While at the same time, three teams (UT, KSU, KU) are undefeated at home (6-0) and one team is 5-1 (Texas Tech, where we head after the Manhattan Monday matchup).

As far as winning the Big XII, winning in Manhattan gives UT a two-game lead over KSU with the tiebreaker in hand (that's if KSU beats Baylor tonight) and a one-game lead over KU with the tiebreaker in hand.  Of the remaining games before the regular season ends, only Tech in Lubbock is a real challenge.  At that stage, even losing at Lubbock would be no big deal, since the last two games are gimmies and UT would still win the Big XII regular season.  Lose in Manhattan, UT could finish 3rd in the conference.

What Monday means for the tournament, by beating K State, UT will have shown that they have what it takes to at least make it into the Elite Eight, if not the Final Four.  Lose to K State and the Sweet Sixteen is as deep as they are going.

Great win today, Horns - play your hearts out again Monday to pick up the win and no one will care if you take next Saturday off in Lubbock, you'll still coast into the top seed for the Big XII tournament and have shown you can put 5 wins in a row together against tournament quality opponents, a great omen for things to come.

What does this mean?

this makes absolutely no sense to me.  wouldn't the results of, say, the entire season be a better gauge of how well texas will do in the tournament than the results of one single game?  how exactly is the entire fate of texas' tournament hopes completely encapsulated by one game?

I Know This Must Be Hard

for you to comprehend, so I'll speak reeeaaaalll ssssllllooowwwww for you, oh, ye nasty stalker billyzane:

T o  w i n  t h e   N C A A  T o u r n a m e n t  y o u  h a v e  t o  w i n  6  s t r a i g h t  g a m e s  o v e r  q u a l i t y  o p p o n e n t s.

A team that is only capable of winning 2-3-4 straight games during the regular season against tough opponents doesn't demonstrate that they have what it takes to keep it up at the highest level.  Sure, winning over an entire season and the totality of the resume, particularly as good as UT's has been this season is a good thing.

To put up FIVE straight wins over quality opponents late in the season, opponents that play very different styles of basketball, games in hostile arenas with lots of pressure bodes very well for the tournament.  Winning at KSU puts the exclamation point on 5 big wins.  KSU is undefeated at home, UT winning there demonstrates they are a force to be reckoned with.

Yes, billyzane, t h e r e  i s  n o  s i n g l e  p r e d i c t o r  o f  s u c c e s s.  But there are markers that winners lay down.  The KSU game is one of them.

After reading your other posts where your "pet peeves" compel you to become a complete and total asshole because you disagree with the OP or would have phrased something differently I can only hope that you'll do me the favor of ignoring my future posts and leave your rants to yourself.  Jerkoff.

Or better yet

If you have some personal comment to make, send a personal message. Spare the rest us of the annoyance of your little spat.

Well, that was uncalled for.

I asked you to explain something that you did not explain in your first post.  And to the extent that you did, thank you.

To the extent that you ripped into me for not understanding what you failed to explain initially, well, that reflects far more poorly on you than it does on me.

No sense getting upset every time anyone disagrees with you or asks you for further clarification of a point you ambiguously made.  You don't make friends with anger.  Or salad.

Just made a diary about this

DJ says he's coming back next year

Also, OU coach Jeff Capel says DJ should be getting NPOY consideration

There was a nice debate in the pre-game show of the Memphis/Tenn game of who's better between Kansas and Texas.

They compared the resumes, and it's very obvious that Texas should have the higher seed. Higher SOS, better quality wins, the head-to-head win.

They debated who's the better team. Hubert Davis and Digger basically implied Texas. Everyone criticized KU for their lack of perimeter shooting and disturbingly high turnover numbers. They said Texas finds a way to score easier.

Jay Bilas was the only one to go with KU. His logic is that KU is more suited to perform well in the NCAA Tournament because of their superior size and superior defense. I think I can agree with this to a certain extent. But I believe our PG is the difference maker.

On a friggin' roll...

Wiggo, our defense is doing something I can't quite put my finger on the last few game, but whatever it is, it's beem damn effective...

So many teams play the high pick and UT is challenging it beautifully...sometimes it seems like we've got six guys on the floor. The defender who's man sets the high pick leaves his man to disrupt our opponent's PG just long enough for his defender to get around the pick and regain pressure. It's incredibly frustrating for our opponents and I love it. It basically renders the pick worthless and just makes our opponent reset their O, but with much less time on the shot clock.

I said earlier that Gary Johnson was the heart of this team, but I'm quickly moving that title to Damion James. You can't discount Gary's contribution in the second half of this season, but everytime I look up, it seems James has another double-double. Don't know what Barnes said to him after the A&M game, but we should make a bumper sticker out of it.

KU losing tonight was just huge as I didn't see them dropping another one. Manhattan will be damn tough but at least we'll go in with a lot of confidence. I didn't like having to play 3 big Monday's in a row, but in the Dance, you have to be able to play two great games in a 3-day span and it's turned out to be great practice.

Big week coming up with two roadies...we earn a split, I think we'll win or at least tie for the regular season title.

Lastly, what happened to the Agros...talk about mailing it in. I think Mark's team just laid a Turdgean.

Seriously

Turgeon is the least charismatic coach I've ever seen. I'd be soooo upset if he were at Texas.

A&M

Aggies have gone from 6-3 to 6-6 in just a week and a half.

Final four games: Tech, @ OU, @ Baylor, Kansas.

They absolutely must get two of those and get to 8-8. With their weak non-conference, 7-9 won't be good enough. In fact, no Big XII team has ever been selected as an at-large team with less than a .500 conference record.

High pick and roll defense

The reason we can do this so well is the lateral speed of our bigs.
Watch when other teams try to do that to us, DJ just dribbles around their big and they can't move fast enough to stop him, so they either foul him or he burns the guy and is in the lane with only one big left to try and stop him.

by Wells on Feb 24, 2008 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

True dat

One other thing, usually our oppoenents use one of their lesser offensive weapons to set the pick...if they used a guy with more offensive prowess, he could streak to the bucket for a quick pass and lay-up (thus the pick n'roll) as we're ostinsibly double teaming their PG for a second or two.

But because the guy setting the pick isn't much of a threat it gives his defender time to drop back and pick him up again once we've regained pressure on their team's PG.

It'll be interesting to see if this continues into the tourney as some coach will figure that out most likely and we'll have to return to a stricter man-to-man D.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.

Michael Beasley... oh my!

Had 28 points at halftime in the Baylor game.

With 14:11 left in the game, he now has 34 points.

This would be a much needed high quality road win for KSU if they pull this out. They're only up 5 though.

All I can say is good luck Damion James on Monday!

The refs

Cut the balls off both teams tonight.  It really detracted from the game, I felt.  Oh well, the end result was still quite enjoyable.
