Texas at Oklahoma Open Game Day Thread
Texas and Oklahoma hit the hardwood tonight at 6:00 p.m. CST on ESPN2.
Game comments here. Excellent game preview here.
AW: My two cents. OU is a lot like A&M: solid half-court defense, phsycial forwards, and serviceable guards. To be honest, I don't like this matchup for the Horns.
Blake Griffin is probably the second best freshman in the country conference and appears to be fully healthy. Longar Longhar is much improved over last season and will be difficult to shoot over in the paint. Austin Johnson, Tony Crocker, and David Godbolt can all knock down the long ball.
OU’s post players are more skilled and present tremendous matchup problems for the Horns. If Barnes elects to play man and starts Justin Mason at the small forward spot, OU will have an enormous size advantage at the forward spots. Please, play zone. If OU beats us from the perimeter, so be it. I just won’t be able to watch Blake Griffin going off on the low block against man-to-man defense.
On offense, DJ Augustin will have a quickness advantage and should be able to get into the lane. His decision making once he gets there will be key. AJ Abrams and Justin Mason should be free for some open looks from three and Connor Atchley, Gary Johnson, and Damion James will need to be ready to finish off the pass.
If you like up and down, finesse basketball, don’t tune in for this one. It should be a war. The Sooners are favored by 2-3 points by most books and Pomeroy predicts a 70-68 OU victory, for what its worth it.

9-2 OU at under 16
shot selection has been poor so far. AJ is 0-2. Mason forced one and somehow we are allowing fast break opportunites despite not crashing the offensive glass.

Rick Barnes...
...sux. He has no clue how to design offensive sets. That's why we get off to such slow starts every game.
by DC Horn on Feb 6, 2008 6:11 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Maybe not sucking,
but I do have to wonder why we only have one play on offense and always start so slowly. While the players evolve and grow, our coaching doesn't seem to.

Texas is ice cold
Nice follow from Gary.
17-11, under 12 tv timeout.
Sooners have already hit three three pointers and have gotten the ball easily to B. Griffin. Texas' offense is very stagnant. Lots of dribbling by DJ and waiting for AJ as he runs the baseline. Need to get some touches on the low blocks for Gary. Attack the rim and force the issue. Don't just resort to perimeter jumpers.
by awiggo on Feb 6, 2008 6:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Field Goals
Texas 4/15 26%
OU 7/11 63%.

James
picks up silly foul as he pushes Griffin on the low blocks. Horrible D from Texas on inbounds play.

Foul on B. Griffin
Loose ball foul. Bad luck for him, good news for us.

Mason with a 3, wow
about time. OU starting to get really sloppy with ball. That is about five turnovers already.

21-16 OU, under 8 tv timeout
Better. Horns starting to create turnovers and got an easy layup from DJ and two FTs from AJ off them.
OU has missed last couple of threes as well.
Gary Johnson showing good energy on both ends and was a little unlucky with his last jumper.

Griffin with 9 pts
and getting doubled on every touch. He may be a Sooner but he is really good.
DJ nice job pushing action. OU looks tired to me.
by awiggo on Feb 6, 2008 6:37 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I agree Griffin is doing a great job...
...but they are calling fouls whenever a Longhorn gives him a less-than-nice look.

same thing happened in College Station

27-23 OU, under 4 tv timeout
DJ sank last two free throws. Horns still perfect from the line.
Not sure why but Horns are back in man defense. The zone was forcing contested threes. Other than Crocker early, no other Sooners are knocking down perimeter jumpers.
Again, Texas looks to be in much better shape than OU. Lots of grabbing of the shorts by Sooners. They will likely survive this half but stamina could be an issue in the second.

4pt game while they're shooting 40% and we're shooting 25%... I'll take that.

agreed
I also agree with AW that OU is already close to gassed, we should be able to overtake them in the second half. And let's stay in that zone!

Texas with ball, 30 sec left
Down just four after slow start and forced shots isn't so bad. OU has really helped with terrible 3 pt shooting.
by awiggo on Feb 6, 2008 6:47 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
somehow
We are still in it. OU went cold after their hot start, and we've been able to keep them within reach despite our terrible shooting that hasn't gotten better yet.

29-25 OU
Not a good last poss. DJ gets a shot blocked in the lane. No one else touched the ball.
Texas doing a good job in zone defense and by doubling Griffin on the catch. DJ a little frustrated by long OU defenders.
Stay in zone, push the ball, and feed the post. Come on Horns. Longar squared is in street clothes. We have a great shot at stealing this one.

Notes from the top of my head...
Atchley came up HUGE down the stretch with his defense, rebounding, and the tip-in.
Mason was clutch from 3 all night long, not missing any of his 3 attempts and hitting both free throws.
AJ hit some beautiful 3s, and a few from inside the arc as well. He ended with 22.
I'm going to put this in all caps: TEXAS DID NOT MISS A FREE THROW, going 11-11. That felt good.
Looking at the box score, only 4 guys scored for OU.
Texas ended the game shooting 38.6%, while OU finished at 34%. Quite the contrast from the first half. Credit to Barnes for the defensive effort, as well as to OU for playing sloppy ball.
