Morning Coffee Peers Down At The Bubble
Sooners pick up critical win. Oklahoma's 68-56 win over Oklahoma State in Stillwater last night tightened the Sooners' grip on an NCAA tournament berth as they move to 20-10 overall, 8-7 in conference play. For Oklahoma State, they're now far outside looking in, needing a win Saturday over Texas and at least two wins in the Big 12 tournament to have a chance. Byron Eaton was bound to return to being a pumpkin at some point, anyway.
Baylor flops. The other team with a chance to lock up their tournament status failed last night, as Texas A&M picked up a must-win at the Ferrell Center, 71-57.
A record crowd was on hand for the game, which got testy towards the end, especially after Donald Sloane's showboating dunk with just seconds remaining. The 12th Manchild has video of the jam, as well as postgame commentary. The DMN's college blog has a ton of good coverage of the bottle throwing Baylor students, as well.
(This is as good a time as any to note that The 12th Manchild is relaunched under a team of new writers. Stop by and give 'em a warm welcome.)
And the Frannie goes to... ESPN.com's Fran Fraschilla hands out his Big 12 awards ($) for the season:
Big 12 First Team
F Michael Beasley, Kansas State
F Blake Griffin, Oklahoma
G Brandon Rush, Kansas
G Curtis Jerrells, Baylor
G D.J. Augustin, Texas
Big 12 Second Team
C Aleks Maric, Nebraska
F Darrell Arthur, Kansas
F Damion James, Texas
G A.J. Abrams, Texas
G Mario Chalmers, Kansas
Coach of the Year: Rick Barnes. (Speaking of which, Rick Barnes is a finalist for national coach of the year, as awarded by the US Basketball Writers Association.)
Quick Hits. Is your knowledge of past Texas recruiting years encyclopedic? If so, you might enjoy this article... Billy Disch, Burt Hooper, and Greg Swindell elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame... A&M's athletic director is as dumb as you'd imagine... An absolute must-read Big 12 stat piece from SMQ.

A&M/Baylor Game
That game last night was hilarious. It kinda reminded me of old basketball games of a different era. Fights, fans routy, both teams getting physical, the refs not doing much, etc.
Funny.

Speaking of bubble teams - will it be enough?
The Texas WBB took care of Tech in their final Big XII game last night 70-55 to take their record to 19-11 (7-9 in conference). Will it be enough? Coach G seems to think so.
I think we’re definitely in the Tournament so that feels good, but we know that we are still on a mission. I believe we are playing some of our best basketball right now, and that’s a good thing because this is the time of the year you want to start peaking. But, we have things to prove and that’s also a good thing. Right now, our focus is on the Big 12 Tournament. We want to make a great showing in the Big 12 Tournament.
I'm not quite as sure, although when you look at the latest bracketology it's hard to argue there are 64 teams that are better than Texas right now. The team finished on a 3-game win streak, including a huge upset of #10 OU. Texas will start off the tourney against either Tech (who they split with) or Colorado (who beat Texas in Boulder). Crash out with a loss in that game and I'd be hard pressed to justify an invite to the dance.
