Longhorns Win Third Big XII Title under Barnes
Game Recap: This afternoon’s game was no prettier than the mid-week game with Nebraska, but in the end, it didn’t matter. The #9 Texas Longhorns outlasted the Okalahoma State Cowboys, 62-57, in an ugly, low-scoring, and physical affair. The victory gives Rick Barnes and the Longhorns their third conference title in the last decade and clinches the top seed in the Big XII tourney in Kansas City. Technically, it is a co-championship. However, Texas defeated Kansas in Austin, so no one should have any problems calling the Longhorns, Big XII Champions.
Led by DJ Augustin of the offensive end and Damion James on the glass and on the defensive end, the Longhorns led 33-27 at the half despite shooting just 31% from the floor. DJ did a great job in the first half of driving the basketball, getting fouled, and converting at the line, and DaMo seemed to grab just about every missed shot on either end. James had 10 rebounds in the first half and a career-high 18 for the game!
Oklahoma State came out of halftime with a 10-4 run to tie the game at 37. The Longhorns didn’t buckle, though, and had several opportunities to pull away during the second half. However, those chances were squandered by missed looks and turnovers.
The Cowboys pulled to within two, 51-49, on two made free throws by Byron Eaton before AJ Abrams, who was suffering through a miserable shooting game, canned two jumpers. His quick five points put the ‘Horns ahead 56-51 with just over a minute and a half left. OSU made two three-pointers in the final minute but clutch free throw shooting by Damion James (4/4) and AJ Abrams (2/2) sealed the victory and the conference championship.
The outcome was: Sublime. The more you step back and look at what this team just accomplished, the more impressive it becomes. Texas lost the best player in the country from last year’s team, was severely challenged by the losses of Matt Hill and Dogus Balbay to season-ending injuries, didn’t get their only legitimate offensive post threat on the floor until January, and just went 13-3 in one of the two best conferences in the country. Wow! This team, the one without any backcourt depth, the one with two sub-six foot guards, and the one with really only six regular contributors, just set a regular season record for victories with 26. Hats off to Rick Barnes and the basketball staff! The Texas basketball program has now won over 10 games in the conference in nine of Rick’s ten seasons in Austin. Under Barnes’ leadership, the Longhorns have become a consistently elite program that should be mentioned in the same breath as the Dukes, Carolinas, and UCLAs of the college basketball world.
Stat of the Game: Oklahoma State from behind-the-arc: 6-of-28 (21%) Remember not too long ago when opposing guards couldn’t wait to face the Longhorns, so that they could pad their stats from long-range? Remember when all the talk was about how the ‘Horns couldn’t afford to play two sub-six foot guards for 35+ minutes because teams were killing us from long-range? I remember, and it wasn’t so long ago. I don’t know when it change exactly but since about mid-season the ‘Horns have been played outstanding perimeter and this afternoon was no exception.
The Offensive MVP was: DJ Augustin. I know he’s said that he would like to come back, but I have to think that this was DJ’s final game in Austin. If it was, his performance this afternoon was a pretty good one to go out on. Although DJ did have five turnovers, a few weren’t his fault, and his assist total of three would have been much higher had his teammates been able to convert on a couple of really nice looks. For the game, Augustin led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-14 from the floor, canned two three-pointers, sank 6-of-7 from the line, grabbed two rebounds, and had two steals in 37 minutes of action. There is always going to be a question about his height, but it’s hard for me to see him returning after leading the Longhorns to a Big XII title and, almost certainly, earning First Team All America honors.
The Defensive MVP was: Damion James. After DaMo grabbed the first three missed shots in the opening 90 seconds, two on the defensive end and one on the offensive end, it was obvious that he was going to have a big night. His effort on the glass continued throughout the game. James ended up with 18 total boards, 14 of which came on the defensive end. When you throw in solid perimeter defense when his man drifted outside and three blocks when he was challenged in the post, you get a complete defensive performance. Very nice work by DaMo.
The Freshman Evaluation tonight was: Inconsequential. Gary Johnson did bounce back from a terrible performance against Nebraska but still didn’t play well. Johnson played just 15 minutes, scored two points (both on free throws), and failed to grab a single rebound. The Longhorns did feel comfortable enough to go to Johnson late in the game, though, and Gary responded by drawing a foul and making his free throws. The Longhorns are going to need a stronger performance from Gary to a make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
I thought Barnes made a mistake for the second game in a row by not going back to Clint Chapman in the second half for additional minutes. Chap played five minutes in the first half and scored two points on a nice fade-away and blocked a shot. He did give up an offensive rebound and a put back, but I thought he deserved another chance.

Alexis Wangmene played just two minutes and was called for two fouls. It was far from his best effort.
Three Things: (1) AJ: hot and cold. Abrams played 37 total minutes, 35 of which were awful on offense. AJ made just one of his first 13 field goals before knocking down two critical jumpers. The first came off a nice head fake and a single dribble, and the second came from about five feet beyond the arc late in the shot clock. AJ also added two more free throws in the final minute to help put the game away. So, AJ scored two points in his first 34 minutes but seven down the stretch. Some of his missed shots were forced, and he has got to do a better job of taking jumpers within the flow of the offense, but it was obvious that his confidence was still there when the Longhorns needed him the most.
(2) When are we going to hit on all cylinders? This afternoon it was DJ and Damion with AJ thrown in late. In other recent games, it’s been Connor and DJ or AJ and DJ, but rarely have all four scorers been ‘on’ in a given game. This team plays solid enough defense that they can overcome foul trouble to a starter or two or a cold shooting game by one or two starters and still beat most teams. They are probably good enough to win their first two games in the NCAA tournament in scenarios such as these. However, to make a Final Four or to win a national championship, more Longhorns are going to have to be ‘on’ than just one or two.
(3) This team is not built for the Big XII tournament. Texas played just six guys in the entire second half. The bench contributed a total of four points and four rebounds in 22 minutes in the entire game. This team can easily win two games in three days, which is what is required in the NCAA tournament. I’m just not sure they will be able to win three games in three days, which is what would be required in Kansas City. To me, the goal is NCAA tournament success and a trip to the Final Four in San Antonio. A conference tournament championship would be nice, but I won’t be disappointed, if we fall on Saturday and have an extra day of rest before the Big Dance.
Big XII Champions! Congratulations Rick Barnes! Congrats Longhorns!

Pulling these together...
...I was pleased to be able to go on the court yesterday and fire up the crowd. I've had a lot of fun with the Wabash this season, but I go to the games first and foremost as one of the biggest Texas Basketball fans on campus. I think Ryan Clarke (Longhorn Road Trip) takes the cake as the biggest fan, but I only missed one home game this season, which was due to a legal memo deadline.
I didn't wear the sheep costume for the A&M game last season, but two seasons ago, I wore a SWAT outfit while my friend dressed up like Billy Gillespie and held up his sign for being arrested for a DUI. It was funny, but pretty classless, and I wish we wouldn't have done it. The South O-Zone pretty much handles the sheep and Seahawk duties against A&M.
Dancing the Wabash originated with my cousin's husband (Alvin) in Section 62, who is the really athletic black guy in the black baseball hat. He started the tradition, and, during the 2005-2006 season, I also started watching the Pom Squad to figure out the routine. It took a few games, but it's a pretty simple dance, and I told some friends I had down stone-cold. That piece of braggadocio led Alvin and myself to dance a few joint routines at the end of 2005-2006. He got hurt in a flag football game last season and passed the torch to me, since he could barely walk.
I've had fun with it, but it's not really something I brag about as a pick-up line...in fact, the girls I've dated the last couple years really had no idea about it until they made the unfortunate error of attending a basketball game with me.
I'm glad you guys seemed to enjoy the performance yesterday...

Conference Championship
Probably shouldn't take that for granted...I know we don't football, that's for sure.
Good on the Horns. I don't think it takes a brain surgeon to look at the conference top to bottom and deduce that the North isn't quite as competitive as the South. The bottom 3 seeds are from the North and even Nebraska only got the 7th via tie breaker.
Indeed, give the Horns a lot of credit. Enjoy the conference title, they earned it.
Also agree that losing next Saturday wouldn't be the end of the world.
The thought of KU winning yet another tourney title doesn't exactly thrill me, but we all know deep runs in the Big Dance are remembered long after conf. tourney titles.

and so are huge failures. KU fans know what I'm talking about. Bucknell. Bradley.
Let them enjoy another tournament championship if they get there. I still see this team underachieving once again under Bill Self.

Disagree
Mason has really learned to be a teammate this year. He doesn't shoot well, but he has limited his shots to when he is wide open.
What he does add:
Offensive rebounding
Ball handlings
Assists
Defense, defense, defense
Hustle
Semi-solid free throw shooting
There was a time earlier in the year when I would have agreed, but he changed his approach and plays within the offense now. He doesn't take more than 3-4 shots per game that aren't lay ups.
Dowell probably wouldn't be better, but Williams might add something to this team.

Sorry to pile on here ...
... but I couldn't disagree with mj more.
J Mason is one of my very favorite players EVER in Texas basketball, and I've been watching since the Blanks and Mays days.
In fact, I've been pleased that J has actually found some offense as of late. Today, he hit a long three. But that's just icing, as far as I'm concerned.
This guy is one of the best defensive players Texas has ever seen. His effort never drops, and he never stops. I love seeing him on the court.

Sounds like you have already decided
that you will mistakenly blame any loss on Mason, marking your own words.
He is shooting 67% from the line. As a team Texas is shooting 68%. Yes, Mason is only 40% from the field and the team is 46% (DJ is 44%, Johnson 41%).
He was 7 of 9 against Tennessee. I guess that was an aberration.
Forget the stats, the truth of the matter is that Texas is a better team with Mason in the lineup, that should be obvious to anybody who is paying attention.

Co-Champs Along with KU
Technically, it is a co-championship. However, Texas defeated the Kansas in Austin, so no one should have any problems calling the Longhorns, Big XII Champions.
I do.
Aside from a poorly constructed sentence, both teams are Co-Champs. KU had the advantage of a weaker shedule (the North not being as strong as the South). Texas had the advantage of having the one game between the teams being in Austin. Texas couldn't beat A&M in Colic Station, KU won by 17. Texas couldn't beat Misery in Columbia (I actually like Columbia so no derogatory slam), KU won by 6. KU couldn't take care of KSU in AFHW, Texas won by 9. OSU beat KU by 1 in Stillwater, lost by 2 to Texas.
Game by game comparison.

It was a Co-Championship, wins at home are only used for seeding purposes. All things being equal, KU was more likely the better team. If you win the Big 12 Tournament, then I'll call you champions.

interesting analysis
I appreciate your opinion, but one could also use the kenpom ratings to observe that 6 of the top 8 teams are in the South part of the conference, so Texas went 13-3 with the tougher schedule AND won the head to head game with KU (albeit in Austin.) So, I understand your point, for sure. But, one could argue Texas fought the tougher road to get to 13-3.
Regardless, I do see your point, and I don't necessarily disagree that KU is at least the more talented team. However, that doesn't guarantee championships of any sort.
Maybe we'll see a rematch and see how that goes. But, I also don't think this Texas team would thrive in a third game in three days.
by junglerules on Mar 9, 2008 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd have to agree
We shouldn't waste time arguing over whether or not winning the head-to-head matchup and getting a #1 seed in the tourney should make us Big 12 Champs. The Big 12 has already decided how to make the ruling, and we are officially co-champs. In my opinion, the title doesn't matter so much, because this year both teams are final four capable. Success in the dance is what both these teams are focused on.
The Jayhawks are a very good team, and though I wish we would've taken care of business at Tech and won the title outright, I'm OK with us sharing the title. In a perfect scenerio we would meet in the Final 4 or the championship game, and it'd be at tough one. It'd also be a perfect scenerio because it'd be in San Antonio, essentially another home game for us.

I think AW's point
was not that Texas was the "true" Big 12 champion rather than Kansas, but rather that in discussing this team, we don't always have to qualify it with a "co-" because this team deserves to be the champion (with no statement that Kansas doesn't also deserve it). It's just a semantic thing.

Good Catch
Sorry about the extra 'the.'
We don't need to win the Big XII tourney to be called champions.
I don't want to get into a big fuss over champions vs. co-champions. The conference calls it a co-championship and that is fine for them. Here, we're calling the Longhorns champions.
Texas and Kansas finished with equal records, yet the Longhorns beat the Jayhawks and played a tougher schedule. That is enough for me.

Stats can be just as misleading as they are telling...
KU has the deeper bench and the superior front court...we have the All-American Point Guard.

Say what you want
We beat Tennessee, UCLA, and KU. 3 top 10 teams. How many top 10 teams did you beat?
Why does margin of victory even matter? You're making too much out of this. You really think you'd beat Tech by 50 if you were playing AT Tech? In fact you lost @ Tech last season so these numbers are highly misleading.
When it comes Dance time, I'll take Rick Barnes over Bill Self, and I'll take our guard play over your guard play.
And by the way, we ARE champions. So is Kansas. BOTH ARE. So then you better call us champions.

Shared Co Championship everybody wins
why isn't the head-to-head a tiebreaker?
As in, breakin the effing tie. Why are we sharing or co-champing or partial-trophy hyphenating anything?
We played KU. We beat them. They are not co-anything with respect to Texas.
I do not get why they have a share of anything

We beat Kansas in 2006 as well
It was the same scenario in 2006 that it is this year. Texas and Kansas both finished at 13-3 and split the title, even though the Longhorns beat the Jayhawks 80-55 in Austin.

agreed
Texas should be the outright champions because of the head to head win and winning at Baylor, OU, KSU and Okla St are all better quality road wins than what KU has. KU has not defeated a team currently ranked in the Top 25. Texas defeated UCLA and Tennessee, which are likely #1 seeds, and defeated one of them on the road and the other at a neutral site. No other team in the country can claim that.

Outside of Texas KU 7-0. Avg. score KU 86-73.1 KU +12.9
Value of home game worth approx. 7-8pts.
KU's Big 12 opponents went 108-122 in games not involving KU. Texas' Big 12 opponents went 118-112 in games not involving UT. KU's avg. opponent would have a 7.5-8.5 record over a 16 game schedule. Texas avg. opponent over a 16 game schedule would have a record of 8.2-7.8.
The strength of the South was worth a one game advantage for KU, the game being at home was worth a one game advantage for UT.
If you want to call UT champions that is your right, but winning the game in Austin doesn't automatically give them the "mythical" Big 12 Championship. This isn't football, you have to earn a championship on the court. However, I think all Big 12 basketball championships are somewhat mythical, until the two divisions are equal in terms of quality teams or they go to a true round robin. The only "real" Big 12 champs have been 96-97, 97-98, and 01-02 KU teams. You have to win the conference by 3 games to be a true championship team, to negate the impact of the schedule.
If it is any consolation, I think Texas was the better team in 2005-2006, the last time these two teams were Co-champs. If A&M had tied KU, last year, I would have thought of them as champions since they won @ KU. Since KU went farther in the B12 and NCAA tournaments than A&M along with the better regular season record, KU probably was the best team in the B12 last year.
