New Blog: RSL Soapbox for Real Salt Lake Fans!

For what it's worth, I'm sorry Chris.

So I'm watching SportsCenter this morning when I nearly shot Cheerios and milk out of my nose because I saw a highlight of Bill Buckner walking stoically to the mound at Fenway to throw out the first pitch of Boston's home opener yesterday.

And after getting over the initial shock of seeing a man that I thought would only return to Fenway strapped with dynamite or to see it razed to the ground, I began to get really indignant.

Even if this magnanimous gesture does help Buckner and his family put the past behind them, I feel like Red Sox fans and especially the Boston media don't deserve to have this conscience-appeasing moment for the hell they put Buckner and his family through after the infamous error he committed in Game 6 of the '86 World Series.

For crying out loud, the guy had to move his family to B-F-Idaho to get away from the torment and even there, he was constantly hounded by opportunistic media hacks asking him to apologize for letting his error become an excuse for their constituents' pathetic, miserable lives.

Even worse, I believe Red Sox Nation forfeited their right to make amends with Buckner forever when they didn't get it done before they won a World Series...maybe that's why Moises Allou recently tried to play damage control by exonerating Steve Bartman before the Cubs do something to remind their fans that they destroyed a man's life because he was sitting in the wrong seat at the wrong time.

But as my pride begat my fall from the soap box pulpit, I imagined Chris Simms sitting in his dorm room alone erasing 1,000's of threatening calls to his cell phone from irate Longhorns fans drunk with hate after the 2001 Big XII Championship.

And sure, like most fans, I never sent a threatening voicemail to Simms or messed up his car or did anything that could be construed as hurtful to he or his family, but I never defended him either and when fellow fans were hanging him in effigy, I stood idly by feeling sorry for myself.

So I ask you...is Chris Simms really any different than Bill Buckner when it comes to suffering the wrath of a disconsolate fan base whose ire was stoked by a bunch of media whores who'd gladly sacrifice an athlete (an amateur one no less) in the name of ratings and selling papers?

More importantly, am I or are you any different than the Red Sox fans I just patronized?

And like Red Sox Nation and Buckner, is it too late for Longhorns fans to make amends with Simms now that UT has won a Championship and the "co-starter" era has been reduced to a mere footnote in Texas football history?

The evidence suggests it as like Buckner before him, Chris' only crime was failing to live up to expectations. No matter what, Simms will always be remembered for that fateful day in December 2001, but I also remember a guy who played hard, played hurt, and played for the love of his teammates. We should all be so fortunate.

For what it's worth, I'm sorry Chris...sorry for losing perspective back then and sorry for knowing that I feel guilty now only after getting the one thing you couldn't give me.

Thank you

Appreciate the props and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's drawn this comparison.

When I read it again, I sound like I was totally inspired by guilt, but my real motivation was shame. There are few things in this life that I detest more than hypocrites and I couldn't have a been a bigger one this morning.

I was literally yelling at the TV and admonishing the Red Sox fans...maybe, in a way, I wanted to apologize to them too with this post though I feel like we're all guilty of doing these guys an injustice.

Please

Write something nice like that for me should I ever drive you, or anyone, to insanity by anything I may do. I'm not saying it was biblical, but it is a nice lesson in "Forgive and forget" and move on and remember the good memories.

Are you also letting him off the hook for the Kyle Shanahan tattoo?

So take that.

No way

He's fair game for that one...he volunteered that info to the press.

Well Said....

It always amazes me when college players are tomented, by fans, like this. Their friggin' kids playing a game.  It is inevitable that they are going to make mistakes.

The difference between me and Red Sox fans

Aside from me having self-confidence, extracurricular hobbies, the ability to communicate with people on non-violent terms, the lack of hypocrisy, the self-awareness to stop alcohol consumption prior to the point of no return, the appreciation of competition, the capability for both sympathy and altruism, a basic understanding of priorities, the ability to handle stress, the tendency to speak without whining, ....

Ok, so there are a lot of differences between me and Red Sox fans.  But one key difference is that I'm not a pussy, and that's why I'm never apologizing to Simms!  Never!  You hear me, Chrissy?  Never!  I want my 2001 Big XII Championship game back you son of a b!

Yeah

If you recall, everyone thought the Sooners were a lock to go to the conference title. All they had to do was beat a so-so OSU team at home. Hell, even Stoops made that infamous remark before the game, "Texas can call themselves co-champs of the south if they want, we're the ones going to Dallas."

Anyway, an OU alum I know, who was also sure the Sooners were coming to town, comandeered his company's suite for the game for ten of his Sooner friends, but he still had to pay $100 per ticket plus the cost of booze and food.

And of course when the Sooners lost and Texas got the nod, all of his friends bailed and he was forced to scramble. Me and bunch of my Texas friends agreed to buy the tickets, but he still had to take care of the booze and food tab.

We thought this was the ultimate revenge...now most us of don't even like to admit we were even there.

As I recall...

Roger Clemens was going strong that game when McNamara unaccountably pinch hit for him while the Sox had the lead. And McNamara's the one who decided to pitch to Wilson with first base open. If you ask me, they targeted the wrong goat.

Red Sox Nation

The Nation is a bunch of bandwagoners who don't know who Bill Buckner is.

True Sox fans still exist, but there are plenty of douchebags who walk around with Red Sox gear that never knew Clemens pitched for their "favorite team", let alone that Buckner's error cost them the title in that game.

by chief on Apr 9, 2008 4:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Red Sox Nation

While its true that RSN is made up of at least 70% bandwagoners, any true Sox fan knows that Buckner is just a scapegoat.  Yes, he made the error that gave up the winning run, but the Sox had a 2 run lead heading into the bottom of the 10th.  He shouldn't have even been in the game - he was a defensive liability. The Sox made a series of terrible decisions in that half inning and, while Buckner's error was the most visible, it certainly wasn't the most egregious.

In addition, that was the sixth game.

The Red Sox still lost the final game on their own. Fuck 'em.

You May be right!

You knowww... I've been thinking about this since I read your article and I gotta say.. although like the rest of us, I was completely devastated, I would never have gotten the opportunity to meet Major in person in San Diego had we not lost that game to CU. I was at the San Diego Zoo with a couple of buddies when we ran into the entire Texas team there!

Thankfully I had a camera to record this moment (keep in mind I was a 19 yr old soph. at the time). Also, I vividly remember Nebraska getting their asses handed to them again The U and I really dont think we could have much better. Plus, the 19 point comeback by Major and horns was ohh soo sweet! It gave Major the opportunity to leave a winner!

So all things considered, things really do happen for a reason... maybe we were meant to lose that game... I dont know.. but I know I'm at peace with it now.Major And Me!

good stuff

Never have and never will understand the abuse that Chris took. Who cares how Buckner's appearance came about.  It happened and that is better than it not happening.
Good piece.

This makes sense to me...

... But what happened to Simms in that game?  I never found out more than he threw a million interceptions and fumbled a few times to boot, then got pulled in the third quarter when he dislocated a finger or something.  Was there more to this?  Torn spleen or something?  Or did Colorado just watch film from the first time we played them and adjusted while Davis sat on his farts and raked in the same salary as the DC?

That's who we should really be hating on: Greg Davis.  Even VY had a few of those "Woops, where'd the offense go?" days before '05.  I think that days like Chris' folly, the Red River Shutout, Aggisaster '06 and '07, the "What the Duck?" Holiday Bowl, Bring on the Cats ('07 not '06), "Stop blitzing all your dudes so I can call my offense, please, Nebraska" and so forth and so on.  Davis lays eggs more regularly than a farm hen.

So, trying to keep from hijacking the thread, my point is, maybe we were wrong to blame Chris for his horrible performance when horrible performances are par for the course in the Davis offense.  Things go wrong in horrible ways at the worst times, and that's just normal.  Maybe that explains why Major did so well replacing Simms;  If Davis had a separate package for Major, CU may not have been prepared, thinking they would only see Chris.  What's the group opinion?

Go boom, mothers. Please, just go boom.

The offense was the same...

with Applewhite and Simms.  Both were pro-style qbs, and there was no such thing as thunder and lightening, or whatever name they want to assign to Chiles' pass-less offensive set this year.  Personal was the same.

Literally the only difference was who was helming the show.

I was at the game as well with the Band, and what I remember most is that our team was dead in the water when Simms was playing, but Mack would not pull him.  I mean it was bad, terrible decisions, no confidence, he looked like a 7th grader against NFL players, but Mack would not pull him.

Then he "injured" his finger.  One of those, nothing you can see, nothing that would affect him later, and nothing that anyone more than 2 feet away could definitively call as a legitimate injury.  Watching the game, I had the feeling that Simms gave up, Mack wasn't going to pull him, so he pulled himself.

Then Applewhite came in, and just didn't have enough time to cover up for Simms.  We were the better team.  Sure Geiggar screwed up, and sure the Buffs still scored on our D, but we could have, and should have won despite those.

Anyone who was there, left with the feeling that if Simms had started the whole game, we win handily, just like we did earlier in the year.  Simms, for whatever reason, was just plain bad that day, and Applewhite was not.

This entry outlines it well - http://www.burntorangenation.com/sto...

You absolutely cannot blame GD for....

either the holiday bowl loss to Oregon or the 2001 big 12 championship game loss.

Some other games, maybe.  Not those two.  And you can't blame Simms for the Oregon loss either.  He threw two no-doubt-about-it winning touchdown passes in the final 5 minutes that were flat-out dropped by freshmen WR's Roy Williams and BJ Johnson.

And as for the big 12 championship game, I don't know if you watched it or not considering you're just in college now, but beyond Simms' total collapse in the first half (3 interceptions and a fumble) which were clearly individual mistakes rather than systemic ones, the defense didn't exactly hold up its end of the bargain either.  do you remember those pictures this past fall of USC opening those gigantic holes for its running backs?  it was like that.  i have nightmares about Chris Brown and Bobby Purify running wild to this day.  Greg Davis didn't give up 29 first half points.

Right before the end of the first half, Chris got "hurt" and Major came in: False start, incomplete pass, 79-yard TD pass to BJ Johnson.  Everyone sort of settled down after that.  If Geiggar doesn't rough the punter in the 4th quarter, we win that game, I'm almost positive.  And to be honset, I'm still not sure that was roughing.  I think at most it was running into, which is a 5-yard penalty and it was 4th and 8.

Regardless, the point is, you can't blame GD for any of that.  Clearly the game plan was fine, Simms and the defense just didn't show up the first half.  And we still might have overcome it if not for a Geiggar mistake and a questionable call on the roughing the punter.

by billyzane on Apr 11, 2008 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was definitely not roughing

And I'm still bitter about it.

by Meekrob on Apr 11, 2008 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Youch...

OK, so Chris played horribly all by himself.  Maybe not all of the games I mentioned were offense flops, but the point is that GD's offense will go nuclear winter from time to time, perhaps Chris' meltdown was just an extension of that.  You can't say that Greg puts all of these QBs in the position to succeed all the time.  Don't hate on my youth, brah...

Go boom, mothers. Please, just go boom.

by Horn Brain on Apr 11, 2008 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I remember is the left DE

Thornton, if I remember correctly, was injured and placed intermittently in the game. His replacement just rushed straight up the field. CU would block down on the DT and LB and away they'd go for big gainers. That was definitely the the key on the final CU TD. Classic overplay of the DE position.

The defense really gave that game away. Chris must of had a tell on throwing to his left; the left flat was murder for him, even into his pro years.

Forgive Simms? Don't give a shit.

But I did meet Major a couple of months after that Holiday Bowl game at a UT alum function. There was an amount of adulation reserved only for legends, just stunning. I asked him if he had adjusted to that and he said no, that it was beyond anything he had ever conceived or believed possible.

My lesson was that it pays to persevere.

I never give a shit for celeb QBs; they all come with their own baggage.

Buckner was a Cub too

As a loooooooooooonnnnnnnng suffering Cubs fan, I actually have a pretty special place in my heart for Bill Buckner. It's because the man was wearing a Cubs batting glove under his first baseman's mitt when he committed that error in the '86 World Series. Oh, and I fucking HATE the Red Sox... YOU PANSY WHINING LITTLE BITCHES: "Oooohhh...the curse of Babe Ruth is why the Yankees are always beating us" was the cry prior to the 2005 championship. The only thing you CHUMPS ever hear out of a Cubs fan is "eh...wait till next year".

Does that last quote ring a bell, my fine-leathered Horns fans? At least being a Cubs fan was good cross-training to being a Horns fan.

I would totally read the Washington Post every single day if I cared at all about helping Dan Steinberg keep his job.

i do apologize to chris simms the person because i have never heard anything bad about him. but times are tough and the longhorn nation deserved better.

It's only been as of late

That I had begun to question my hatred of Chris. The one thing that I had forgotten to put in perspective is that a) Chris was not the one who created the depth chart b) he's seems like a pretty good guy overall.

Time bring perspective, and I think the longhorn nation will soon figure that out. But as any fanbase with high expectations, those who in high profile positions who don't fulfill them will suffer the scorn of the masses every time.

by fathead on Apr 10, 2008 10:25 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Just never got a legacy win while he was here

Time certainly brings perspective and maybe even a reconcilation one of these days, but thinking about this Simms thing some more, I think another reason people find it hard to like him is he never redeemed himself or left any kind of lasting memory to his time at UT.

Looking back, he had some nice wins over the Aggies and a lot of people remember his unbelieveable 3rd quarter in the 2000 game when he lit them up for like 300 yards in one quarer, but his best win was probably against #17 K-State up in Manhattan. It was a hell of a game and Simms played well driving UT down the field for the winning TD in the 4th while the defense blocked a FG try as time ran out to win 17-14. But of course, it happened the week after another OU loss and UT fans were still pissed about that.

He also beat #14 CU at home in 2001, but of course had his melt-down game against that same CU team later that season. So no credit for that one.

HIs last game was the Cotton Bowl win over LSU which was pretty impressive except LSU wasn't even ranked at the time and the only reason UT was in the Cotton Bowl at 10-2 instead of a BCS bowl was because OU blew the Big XII Title game to that same 8-4 K-State team mentioned above.

What some may not remember is Simms went 21-4 his Junior and Senior years...unfortunately, he'll only be remembered for those 4 losses because the ended up being what kept UT out of the BCS.

But no excuses, he had his chances and I'm not trying to make a case for him going down as one of the greats. I'm simply saying he didn't deserve all the hate that came his way.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.

by 54b on Apr 10, 2008 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was his dad

A lot of people resented Simms because of his dad. He came here with a pro pedigree, a pro physique, and a sense of entitlement that rubbed many the wrong way. When he proved to be mortal after all, it was easy to get down on him. Especially compared to the homespun hero, Major Applewhite.

I always felt sorry for the kid and sometimes wondered whether his problem was that his heart wasn't really in. I got a sense he was striving to live up to expectations, feeling the pressure to match his dad.

I was happy to see him get his shot in the pros and to see him play as well as he did. I can't help thinking that if he had been handled better at UT, he could have been one of the greats.
