Horns Roll in Second Half, Win 102-78
Texas wins going away, 102-78, in Boulder to improve to 11-3 and 1-0 in Big 12 play. Rick Barnes has never lost a Big 12 conference opener. The Horns, other than Kevin Durant, weren't overly impressive in the first half but punished the Buffs with the three pointer and an improved defensive effort to extend a three point half time lead to double digits very quickly.
Behind a strong performance from Richard Roby (30 pts), Colorado was able to hang with the Horns for the first twenty minutes by shooting over 54% from the field, scoring easy points in transition, and competing well on the glass. Texas wasn't awful in the first half either scoring 51 points, but they fell asleep too many times in transition and gave up too many easy looks in the paint after dribble penetration.
The second half was a masterful performance by the Horns. Texas shot an amazing 8/12 (67%) from behind the arc in the second half, 61% from the floor, shut down Colorado's transition game, and dominated the glass (49-27 overall). This game was over about six minutes into the second period.
Kevin Durant was absolutely unbelievable. If he has made a few easy ones late in the second half, he could have easily scored 50 points. Even with the few misses, he tied a freshman record with 37 points, including two monster SportsCenter worthy dunks. It wasn't just dominance on offense though. Durant pulled down a game high 16 rebounds and blocked one shot as well. Durant was basically unguardable the entire game scoring from behind the arc, on the drive, in transition, and at the line. Forget about Big 12 Freshman of the Year or even Big 12 Player of the Year. It is time to start talking about Durant's chances at National Player of the Year. He is that good folks.
We also witnessed Damion James' best game as a Longhorn. James got a few shots in the paint to drop early and finished with a career high 15 points. Even more important than his scoring, James was again active on the glass (9 rebounds in 24 min) and played solid defense.
With the awesome performances by Durant and James, it would be easy to overlook yet another solid game by DJ Augustin. Augustin is most poised freshman point guard I've seen since Mike Bibby at Arizona. DJ finished with 15 points, 9 assists to just one turnover, and four steals. Augustin really ran the offense well: he consistently finds the player with the hot hand and rarely makes a poor decision on the dribble drive. As someone mentioned in the comments last week, Durant is the best player on the floor but Augustin is the future of UT basketball. I can't wait to see his development over the next few seasons.
AJ Abrams again had a slow first half scoring just two points but was crucial in the Horns' early second half run that put this one away. Abrams finished with 15 points (6/12) and knocked down all three of his three pointers after the break. The only starter who didn't stand out numerically was Justin Mason. Mason finished with just five points, four rebounds, and three assists but played solid defense.
Overall, this was a solid and encouraging win for the Horns. On offense, Durant couldn't have been more dominant or more involved. Meanwhile, DJ looks like a maestro at the point guard spot, breaking down defenses and limiting turnovers. The Horns were also physical and aggressive on the glass. For the game, the Horns had 20 offensive rebounds and were +22 in rebounding margin. On defense, the Horns clamped down in the second half (38% for CU from the floor) after a forgettable performance in the first half.
The performance in the second half in Boulder was almost as impressive as the first half performance in Knoxville. Even though Colorado is awful, Texas played fantastic basketball over the last 20 minutes. If the pieces start to fall into place like they did this afternoon, then there is no limit to where this team can go. The football season may be over but excitement remains on the 40 Acres.

First Half of Tennessee Game

Interesting tandem of games
Colorado played a bit better in the first half, good or better that expected on offense, not very good as expected on defense. Texas played great on offense throughout but lacked intensity on defense in the first half and came out and played much better after the break.
Not the same at OK St. Baylor hung around and got within 4 in the last minute, this at Stillwater. OK St. couldn't put Baylor away in front of a loud home crowd. Not a very good effort on defense on the part of OK St. It made them look beatable when the Horns meet up. Big Dex needs to get in shape fast to be ready for Boggan and Monds. Those two will just push Atchely and Hill out of the way. James has some chance using his quickness and athleticism to match up against them and is really starting to show off his skills

Agree
The Horns were ranked at the bottom of the top 25 pre-season but dropped out early and haven't been able to claw their way back in despite playing a solid schedule. Texas has already played Michigan State, Gonzaga, Arkansas, LSU, and Tennessee. We have two solid wins and three respectable losses.
Texas may sneak into the top 25 on Monday but if not they will be there with two home wins next week before heading to Stillwater.

Changes in the top 25
we have examples in the first day #1 UCLA loses, #7 Arizona loses to unranked WSU and #5 Duke Loses to unranked VT at home.
I have caught OK st. three times this season and don't see that there any better than UT. UT is suffering from the Colt McCoy effect, "You can't win with Freshman" which is the status mindset around the country. Which might be true most of the time but Kevin Durant and DJ Augustin are so far nothing but glaring exceptions to that thinking. But as was mentioned above because were not ranked coaches and writers don't watch the UT games because there are almost 25 games a week just for ranked teams.
A big change can come next two Saturdays when the Oklahoma and Villanova games will be carried Nationally then the rest of the country will see what we have been watching for the last few months.
My guess is UT could be ranked in the top 15 to 20. UT is comparable to OK st. whose only real competitive games against were Pitt (won)and Tennessee (Lost). The difference being they return some know quantities in Curry Boggan Monds and Dove. UT on the other hand is filled with unknown freshman who haven't yet proved much. Hopefully on the next weekends UT plays as well as they have up till now because they have a good shot at beating both OU and Nova. Even thought neither is ranked it might show off their talents well enough to break in to the top 25

#15 Marquette has lost two in a row...
Notre Dame just got demolished by Georgetown, and has to play WVU next. So if they don't drop out this week, they will for sure next week, opening a second slot.
Wichita State, which was at #26 in the AP poll, lost to Missouri State.
Michigan State, the next team in the ranking, lost to both Iowa and Indiana this week.
Florida State, which followed next, lost to both Clemson and UNC.
So that would mean the Horns are next to go in the poll. If logic holds. Which we all know rarely happens in either of the polls.
In the Coaches poll, Marquette and Michigan State should both drop out, so #26 WVU will move in for sure. For the second open slot, it looks like Maryland is next in line. However, their schedule has been pretty light so far, and they've lost to the only two decent teams they've played (Notre Dame and Boston College) and barely beat the team dropping out of the poll (MSU at Madison Square Garden). So Texas may get some votes from a few coaches impressed by the large margin of victory over hapless CU. Might be enough to slide us in at #25.

Aggies barely survive K-State
Did anyone get to watch that game? Rough game for aTm, or is KSU really good enough to challenge them at home?

K-State
They could be a force in the big 12 starting next year, once Coach Huggins has a full year under his belt. He has some stellar recruits coming his way.

other signs
UT's D held Arkansas to 12 less points than #8 Alabama defense did. The UT offense scored 19 points more than the #8 team did against the same defense.

A&M vs Kansas State
Don't worry about the rankings, after all the big show is the most important. Sure rankings will help with the first round team played, but hell A&M took out Syracuse pretty easily last year so anything can happen.
I think Texas has a good team and I'll be at the Feb. 28 game hoping the ags can explain it to them =) Better win too, I don't feel like hearing crap.
