This the Big XII - Pac 10 rubber match
KU and Nebraska won today; Ags and Colorado lost, all to Pac 10 opponents. Not that I care about Big XII pride so long as the Horns win!
UCLA shooting well early
but they just can't keep up with the speed of Texas. unless they slow the game down significantly or their hot shooting lasts the entire game, I don't think UCLA can really compete.
of course they have a good coach, so i imagine a massive slow-down is in the near future.
also, everyone from texas can beat their man off the dribble. augustin, mason and atchley have already done it.
Solid start
Gotta make sure we limit their transition points, make 'em earn it in the half court, where they struggle. They've settle for three 25 footers already.
Northeast
It's showing on Comcast Sportsnetwork in Philly if anyone is looking for it and doesn't have the sports tier. HD to boot.
So far so good
Atchley is a just a different man this year. This is only the second time I've seen him, but man, the difference is palpable. He seems to be playing with so much more confidence. I don't want to be hyperbolic, but this is amazing, and good to see. Great fast start by Texas.
Their Big white guy
looks as fast as Big Dex and is going to blow gasket at this rate
WTF A&M!?
What the hell happened in the 2nd half? I only got to see the beginning of the 1st half and it was total Aggie domination. Making most of their shots and great defense.
Then I check the final score and see that they give up 50 points in the 2nd half?
I'm going to guess this is more about Arizona being really good.

Tx 15-14, under 12
Terrible charging call on DJ. Augustin is the one player we cannot afford to have in foul trouble.
UCLA getting decent outside looks but not making anythying. Texas looks to be in better shape, quicker, and more active on both ends. Good start.
UCLA are grinders
I think more than anything we have to keep the pace up. Run it any time we can, force UCLA to play faster. They're out of the comfort zone when that happens.
The only sharp-shooter to really keep an eye on is Collison. Most of the rest of them aren't spectacular.
White on White crime!
Atchley smasch!
Intensity
This is the most intense and high octane I think I've ever seen the Horns play. If they can keep this up for 40 minutes, I'm confident in our chances.
missed that one
but i'm glad to hear it.
by DisplacedTexan on Dec 2, 2007 7:35 PM CST up reply actions
AJ ineffective right now
I'd sit him, go big for a bit, let AJ come back to run in the second half.
atch
why are we so surprised with connor? this is his third year playing in the program. last year he had some brilliant moments and some terrible ones, but you could see him improving. barnes is great at bringing players along. connor has learned his role.
Texas
Is imposing themselves on these guys. Let's hope we're not still the team that gave up huge leads on Kansas twice in a row. Horns up, baby!
Beautiful
Justin Mason stopped my heart.
Justin Mason = Royal Ivey
I can see it already.
And excellent job at Barnes for forcing them to shoot jumpers.
AJ FOR THREE!
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 7:35 PM CST reply actions
Abrams appears!
The assassin strikes!
OMG!
Please don't pull a Kansas after this dominance! Continue to destroy! Destroy!
UCLA getting run
Texas looks so much quicker right now. Bruins can't stop dribble drive and look horrible on offense.
Couldn't have started better. 26-14.
I am wide-eyed right now
This team runs at 10,000 RPM. This is beautiful stuff. Swarming defense, quick ball movement and aggressive drives towards the bucket. Man oh man.
James monstrous on the boards
Justin Mason gives us a little more than just "glue".
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 7:36 PM CST reply actions
This is awesome
Horns playing with energy and composure on both ends of the court. We look like a much better TEAM than last year.
by roywilliamsisgod on Dec 2, 2007 7:37 PM CST reply actions
Defense
Doing a great job against the bigger team. Keep up the pace, baby!
Chapman's box out
Right there. Epitome of the game so far. Just muscled Love out of the way.
by DisplacedTexan on Dec 2, 2007 7:38 PM CST up reply actions
Wow
I'm very impressed. We're looking like the aggressor. Lets just hope we can keep it up for the whole game. It'll be tough with no bench.
OK nvmd
Nash it is. Even the commentators just mentioned him.

Advice for BONers
mute the game on TV and listen to Craig Way on the radio.
Longhorns are bringing their A game, and so is Way.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 7:40 PM CST reply actions
Quick
Momentum shifted for a second, there. Get it back, Texas.
What ball control.
He breaks down the defense on his own by moving effortlessly through the defense. Just wow.
Hope Augustin
Can keep dealing with the pressure like that. They've gotten the ball once, so I'd expect it to continue.
I second that
He takes double teams and burns you with the open man.
How do thugs
get a away with so much then get touch fouls on the other end?
Augustine gets blocked
But has an AMAZING steel on the outlet pass. James Fouled at the hoop.
by roywilliamsisgod on Dec 2, 2007 7:48 PM CST reply actions
Unbelievable
Domination.
Must find an answer for the big guys defensively after the half, though.
Very Strong Half, 37-25
Horns did a nice job pushing the ball early and attacking the rim. Also did a good job on defense forcing the outside jump shot, which is not UCLA's strength, and limiting the touches inside.
Need to keep up the good job on the boards and keep attacking the rim.
Texas really appears to be in much better shape than do the Bruins and have a quickness advantage at every position.
All Texas.
Must continue to out-pace them, and need to get back to being more physical. I have a feeling our shooting will be off coming in after the break, and we'll need to hold the surge off by getting some rebounds. Keep it up, Texas, you're beating these guys.
Bill Simmons
looking like an idiot already. I remember last year all he'd do was bash Barnes and Augustin. Barnes had no idea how to coach, and Augustin was a wild and wreckless PG.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 7:54 PM CST reply actions
wow
This is my first time to watch us on tv. The biggest difference between last year and this one is Justin Mason's confidence.
Outstanding work getting him back "in the game."
by the other Andrew on Dec 2, 2007 7:56 PM CST reply actions
horns look hungry
man oh man, I never thought they could match UCLA inside. It's pretty even on inside play. Horns are ahead on better shooting and all around quickness.
jimmer
never could find a ticket under 50. Sucks.
So I settled for my living room and cheap ass beer.
by the other Andrew on Dec 2, 2007 7:58 PM CST reply actions
it ait over yet guys
these guys can finish.
the Horns need to keep focused and adjust to whatever Howland switches to in the 2nd half
They just lulled us in
Howland is actually an offensive genius and UCLA will come out running the weave or some wonky shit.
The key will be containing the inside muscle of UCLA. Limit them.
by DisplacedTexan on Dec 2, 2007 8:01 PM CST up reply actions
UCLA giving us
a taste of our own medicine.
God, this is looking like those KU games last year.
And there appears to be a lid on our basket.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:14 PM CST reply actions
This sucks.
But not nearly as much as the BCS rankings. You guys are not going to believe my BCS Breakdown this week.
That said, CALM DOWN AND MAKE A BASKET, TEXAS!
UCLA
doing a great job staying with AJ as he runs the baseline. I'd almost rather Connor run the baseline and make Love defend side to side.
Adjust, Rick
They're denying DJ, flashing VERY high on the pick. Denying AJ on the perimeter. Need to work the weak side with Damion
Where's Mason
I haven't heard his name in awhile...
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:25 PM CST reply actions
I don't understand
UCLA is 2x more physical but are getting all the whistles. What the hell?
Also... [long string of expletives]
Damn, Barnes
is going all "Mack Brown" crazy on Mason!
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:27 PM CST reply actions
Now Barnes rubs his voodoo doll...
... And UCLA begins to feel sharp stabbings in their abdomens every time they make a shot. Thug ball, meet devil ball.
UCLA is dictating the tempo
and that's why they came back. We had the tempo in the 1st half.
We need to go back to Suns/Warriors ball. Do we have the energy?
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:28 PM CST reply actions
Cold/Hot
Horns started relatively hot and got a run. UCLA is having their run now. Then the Horns will again.
Still getting a lot of the D rebounds, loose balls.
It'll be ok.
Refs letting a lot of hand checks
and physical play on the preimeter, not at all to our favor.
What do we need to do, now?
I'm going to start gluing my beard clippings from earlier today back on. Maybe that was it...
Have to play through it
Rick needs to get in the ears of the refs as well. Keep attacking the basket.
Yeah, Rick will handle that...
... But what about my beard, dude?!
Ok this is just getting ridiculous.
They put a body on DJ anytime he comes down the court. Fine, I'll look past the fact that Collison has a hand inside swiping at the ball (and missing) every freaking time.
But that... that was a foul.
Chapman getting lots of valuable PT
And I guess we're giving Connor a breather to save him for the end.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:29 PM CST reply actions
First half we took what they gave us.
Horns haven't really run their offense that much; I think like some above they need to run their plays and stabilize their offense, dictate the pace.
They sure have.
DJ not penetrating near as much.
Floor level camera
Is the worst angle ever. I have no idea what's going on. But it doesn't appear to be good.
Damion James - secret weapon
Nationally, everyone thinks about DJ and AJ. If this guy makes this a 3-headed monster, look out.
DJ FOR THREE!
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:35 PM CST reply actions
Mason and Connor
both back in.
Still would like to see more ball movement on offense. We can't expect DJ to create on every possession.
You are misinformed sir
That is Thug-ball and it is accepted if it wears powder blue.
by DisplacedTexan on Dec 2, 2007 8:38 PM CST up reply actions
WHy?
Why is the 'C' on UCLA's jersey a different color than all the other letters? Anyone know? Anyone else really care?
100 Nat'l championships
They are the first school to collectively have 100 championships among their sports teams.
by DisplacedTexan on Dec 2, 2007 8:40 PM CST up reply actions
Are they counting equestrian
Or some bullcrap? I'm sure A&M gave them chase.
We're going to have to match threes
before this is all said and done.
Our starters are back in
It's time to make the final run, and I emphasize the word run.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:43 PM CST reply actions
We're letting them slow the game down...
Agree. Need AJ's outside thunder now.
But James seems to be it.
James has absolutely
mastered that jumpshot. Great work by him during the offseason.

side note
i'm convinced my upstairs neighbors are fat
i've never heard anyone walk that hard that consistently
sorry ... i needed to complain to someone other than myself
I'm with you
I'm convinced my upstairs neighbor's name on his birth certificate is Stompy McStomperson.
True that!
I think TX ought to recruit the 2 fat chicks that live above me. It feels like the ceiling is about to fall in!
Dammit Connor
grab the ball with 2 hands!
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:45 PM CST reply actions
No reason...
but that reminded me of "Punch the keys for God's sake!"
Run, Texas, Run!
he had it in both hands
hit the rewind on the dvr
it was stripped on the umpteenth over the back foul that wasn't called
LOL
I remember him when he was with the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Loose Ball
That hurts. Don't need to give UCLA easy points, when we're having difficulty getting scores of our own.
We had that rebound. Extra possession for the Bruins.
Texas' shorts
are baller.
by Bdub on Dec 2, 2007 8:48 PM CST reply actions
Ever possession is key now.
So cliche but so true. We need to get points.
And as I say that - DJ airs it. MOVE OFF THE BALL, PEOPLE!
Ugly DJ shot
We allow another 2nd chance basket.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:49 PM CST reply actions
I can't figure UCLA out
Every time I watch them, their ball movement and offense makes me hate myself. And yet that grind out these wins. It just kills me. It's offensive.
If we lose this one,
it will be b/c of the lack of offensive execution.
Our def has been decent and we are more than holding our own on the boards. Really thought we'd get killed on the boards.
Got to get good looks, regardless of how physical they are.
OK it's time DJ
THREE!
He needs to ask himself "WWTJD" ?
Excellent timeout call by Barnes.
Ah, James misses open shot.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:51 PM CST reply actions
DAMMIT!
Now we're just missing wide open looks.
No doubt, we should've won this game, though it's not over yet.

would've been huge for this game.

UCLA MISSES! WE DID IT!
CRAIG WAY IS GOING NUTS!
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 8:58 PM CST reply actions
I don't think Barnes had much of a choice.
Horns were swervin' outa control for a while.
Barnes didn't
Trying to stop UCLA momentum on the road. But Howland sure did. Didn't need to draw up plays with 4 minutes left. Trust your players and good things happen.
Womp Waaaah
Debbie Downer strikes again!
OMG James is a MONSTER!
Headline of the game:
Damion SHAMES Bruins in LA!
DJ and James carry Horns, Again
#1 team in the country.
Texas nows has nations's best win. Period.
Freaks from Hell!
We're freaks from hell! WOOOOOOOO!
DAMN WHAT A GREAT NIGHT
Washed the nasty taste of football right out of my mouth. Great job, HORNS!!
What a game!
Way to play through the dry spell, Texas. Simply incredible. What's college football?
by roywilliamsisgod on Dec 2, 2007 9:01 PM CST reply actions
Probably
We don't beat the #1 team in the country too often. And certainly don't do it on the road, ever.
what was UNC ranked
when we beat em in 95(ish)? In chapel Hill no less.
by the other Andrew on Dec 2, 2007 9:26 PM CST up reply actions
I feel better about the rebounding
but a little worse about the perimeter offense.
I feel vastly better about James and Connor.
Sorta co-mvps. Couldn't have done it with Connor's three, best shot of his career.
TEXAS WINS!!!
WITH THE DJ TO DJ CONNECTION!
...however unintentional it may have been!
WHAT A GAME!
Kevin who?
referring to durant not love
YES!
That was awesome. Open three miss to lose. Damion had a huge game. I love our role players, DJ is always gonna score, but you never know who else is gonna beat you. Tonight, Damion James takes over with jumpers. WOW! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I thought...
...that last shot was a toe-on-the-line two. Still scared the crap out of me.
WHOOOOO
unbelievable finish? was that a pass or a shot by DJ? I really dont care. Helluva game. Our quickness + UCLA's bad shooting made up for our weakness under the boards. Great game by James, the guys down low (especially Wangmene) played a great game. This team is going to be GOOD this year.
Last time we beat a #1 or #2 ranked team
was in the 1980's. 1981 I think?
Durant who?
Yes PB, this is by far one of the biggest wins in basketball school history.
Bragging rights for Big XII, and basketball in the state of Texas.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 9:05 PM CST reply actions
Closest we came that I can remember
...was a few years ago at UNC when we took it to 'em. I think it was when we had Terrence Rencher...but I could be wrong
SWEET!
First time to watch the Horns this season and it's like a totally different team from last year.
The defesnse is incredible...the offense runs through the Point Guard again, thank God.
All the players are stepping up instead watching someone else...it's the Ewing Theory incarnate.
Kevin Durrant was great but this is a team.
And Connor...holy crap, when did he grow a pair.
We need a new nickname for him...
Bad Ass Connor
Ice
F-Bomb Connor (did you see him talkin' shit to the UCLA crowd)
Forget football, it's time for round ball.
Big win, fun game to watch.
I couldn't tell if...
...he was talking shit to the crowd or to a ref — it looked like there was one right where he was staring. And I don't think whoever it was that restrained him (sorry, it happened to quick and that's not where I was looking) would care too much if he was just going after the crowd.
You can't see it in real time
It's during the wrap up as they're going to commercial and they slow the center victory celebration down and then cut to Connor flashing the Horns up at the UCLA students, then he changes to pointing his index finger at them and then I'm pretty sure he "f*ck you."
CONNOR THE BARBARIAN!!!

Let's see now..
We just beat the best team in the country...at their place...where they have the best home record.
Could that mean that we are now ... Number One?
We should have gotten everyone's attention
for a pretty good while. And think of that RPI. Don't get many of those.
And the best thing - no Greg Davis all night long.
haha
and we're not even close to being done now as far as nonconf games go.
Everyone knows who we are now. The target on our backs just increased by a bunch. Michigan State is waiting for us at their place.
We still have Wisconsin and and a good St. Marys team at home.
I think Lunardi will have us as a #1 seed in his "Bracketology".
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 9:13 PM CST up reply actions
That's something Top 10 teams have to contend
with and they'll just have to learn that lesson. Not every night is going to be great, but with this team it has a chance to be. That's the difference.
I think this team likes to play tough games and likes these challenges. That's healthy if they can hold on to it and not get lost in the clippings.
And, like LSU, tOSU, putting that little bird in everyone's ear can pay down the road, if you can fulfill it to some degree.
basketball rankings don't matter for anything
but who has a more impressive resume so far than texas? undefeated; destroyed a top 10 team on a neutral court; beat the #2 team on the road to snap a 25-game home winning streak.
HOLY CRAP!
Did not see that coming. That's the kind of game where we've been blown out by 15-30 points in previous years. This win was HUGE and will pay HUGE dividends in March
Ben Howland
helped UT a lot in this game. What was he thinking in using his last timeout with more than 2 minutes left? I think they could've used that last TO at the end.
His pre-game strategy was garbage, but his halftime adjustments were better. Seems like he and Barnes are the opposite in that way.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 2, 2007 9:10 PM CST reply actions
Makes Tressel
look like 'effing Mike Leach.
i guess
we aren't under anyones radar anymore.
we gotta be a team to beat now. since we won this game, who can beat us. Kansas, A&M.
about to interview Connor on KVET
Some Comments by Rick
He didn't think they'd play zone as much as they did.
Really impressed with James.
Was also surprised that neither team had a timeout in the last few minutes.
FWIW
I HATE UCLA. We win. They loose. Woo! We sure look like a basketball school. Sure its early but would anyone be surprised if this were a Final 4 team. They'll only get better. And, not to beat a dead Longhorn, maybe, just maybe, the B-ball sucess will light at least a small fire under Mack. Maybe, or am I asking for too much.
This is the kind of win
where you go meet the team at the airport or the Drum.
Good idea.
I'm not in Austin but someone should know where to access that in the Athletic Department.
I shot the an email and called
but my email has been problematic since yesterday and the Athletic Dept. only had an answering machine.
Someone got Craig Way's # or access to the radio stations (98.1) who could find someone who knows?
nice, thanks
not really sure i could make it due to work, but if someone could at least provide the info on BON, maybe it would get an extra few people there.
you are right that it is a win that deserves a reception.
arrrghghhghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, i love our team.
Emailed KXAN, suggested they discover details
The bowl games are going to be the lead, but this win tonight can't be ignored. Because of Sunday Night Football, KXAN news won't hit until 10:20-30 and might give them time to make connections. And have something the other station might not have, seeing how they air in seven minutes or so.
You know what's sad...
I wonder how many Longhorn fans even knew this game was on tonight, much less saw it.
The Dallas Morning News barely had a couple of paragraphs on it in the paper this morning and the article was burried...maybe the Statesman did a better job, but I would imagine a lot of students are face down in Finals.
And you know everyone else was tuning into the BCS run down.
Oh well, it's way too early in the season to go truly ape shit, but this is definitely one of those wins you put in your back pocket and when it comes time for the comittee to decide what seed in the Dance Texas gets, you whip it out and say...BOOO-YEAAHHH!!!
And to think that we beat UCLA
without Gary. Despite the win, the 2nd half performance was a bit of a disappointment, especially on offense.
How good are we going to be with Gary Johnson? Jesus Christ.

Dogus Balbay
I don't expect Dogus to play this season. He had knee surgery in Oct/Nov. Even if he was lucky, four months at least. That would put in healthy by the end of February. There wouldn't be much sense blowing an entire year of eligibility then.
true
it would've just been much more awesome having another ball handler in there
for as great as aj's jumpers can be ... he gets trapped entirely too easy
and with the d over persuing him to keep him from getting the ball
his back cut is lacking because of his size
justin mason in the first half of the first half showed how awesome a slasher is in that offense
Maybe yeah, maybe nay
If he's near the quality of DJ and the chance of DJ going pro is relatively high (or higher now), then it would be both to his advantage and to the Horns to get some action this season.
Really, if these guys are not staying for four years, red shirts get sorta obsolete. Great for the Connors of the world, but not for the hyper talented in the modern basketball program.
Hook'em!
Thanks Coach Barnes! Thanks to give us a drop of sweet note from our remorse football season. You just brought us back to the pride of our school and brought the Longhorns back to the national spotlight not only to beat the #1 team in the nation but (in their house). Proud to be the Longhorns! Hook’em!
But still, Mack needs to fire Greg Davis & remove Duane Akina after Holiday bowl. If he don’t do jack about it, I consider to rally my roommates and some of my classmates to wear a huge sign says "We Want Change" and walk in front of his office until he comes out to let us know what the hell he will do about our sorry football season.
If not fire him,
at least Mack needs to find a way to have him to resign from his OC positon. Sorry guys, not to try to turn this thread to a football topic but I'm just so sicked/tired to see Bob Stoop got 5 Big 12 titles in the last 6 yrs.
I can't wait to see West Virginia to pull all kind of trick plays to Fuck the hell of OU just like what Bosie State did last year.
This has been discussed at great length before
but frankly, this night belongs to Texas basketball so leave your Coordinator/Coaching stances out of this thread.
I just wish Mac watched the games
this last weekend. I heard they don't watch much during the season and at times I've caught a whiff of that obliviousness.
The price of poker has gone up and we don't need Mac sitting there with his blinders on.
Ugh
Congrats to your boys. That was heartwrenching (and heartbreaking). Augustin was a beast and hit some amazing shots. The hardest part was losing on essentially an offensive rebound. I never want UCLA to lose, but if they have to, I guess it's better that it was Texas than someone else. I think UCLA will take this as a good learning experience, especially since they were able to figure out the zone and how to defend Texas better in the second half.
A Trojan can only be used once. A Bruin is forever.
a lot of refs will call that bump off the pick
ask shaq
love needs to move his feet better off that one
Just finished the game on TIVO
Great Win
2 Huge Points:
- We beat the number 1 team in the nation on the road shooting only 36% from three.
- We beat the number 1 team without Gary Johnson.
Anybody want to play us at home or on a neutral court with our full squad on an average three point shooting night?
