Memories
I can still remember screaming at the the TV that day. "WTF? He's passing it? What the hell is he thi...OH MY GOD. GO GO GO..." Easily my all time favorite moment of UT football pre-Vince.

Awesome
What a great play. Now I remember someone mentioning this a while ago with Musburger saying "No question what's about to happen here." Haha. Thanks for the link.
A Simple link to a YouTube
Video just doesn't do the feeling justice. This was the Conference championship against a Neb team that was one of (if not) the best teams in the country. It would be like let's say Arizona beating USC in the conference championship (I know, that's probably a bad example - it's early). That play sealed the victory in the most improbable victory that Texas has had in a very long time.
This is the play people are talking about
when they say "roll left."
As in, "you'd have to consider 'roll left' in any discussion of greatest plays in college football history."

In my mind, Texas's win streak
against Nebraska starting in the late 90's precipitated the rise of the Texas football from the UCLA dark ages. Also, the Nebraska program has never been the same after getting smoked by Texas 3-4 times in a row and then having their hearts ripped out by A&M in the 98' big 12 title game.
The 96' big 12 game was epic, but the 98' game in Lincoln in which Ricky put the wood to Nebraska to end their home winning streak was just as monumental.
I still remember the horns needing one last 1st down to end the Lincoln game, and Rick just steam rolling a DB on 3rd down to pick up the 1st and put the game away. Great stuff.
98 title game was
Kansas St actually. The only reason I point it out is because I want to diminish A&M's accomplishment somewhat.

Strange game
I yelled hook 'em aggies at one point because I really wanted KState to lose.
Six of Seven
Texas has won six of the last seven against Nebraksa, including ending the nation's longest home win streak on two different occassions. Three in a row at their place. So Texas has won all five regular season games and then split the two conference championship games.
I think Texas joining the conference is why Osborne retired. He couldn't get his partial qualifiers anymore. It should be noted that they did a remarkable job of graduating those partial qualifiers. He was smart and went out on top. I'm sure he could have adjusted to the new rules, but why would he want to? He built up an incredible legacy and a long career.
Beaumont-boy James Brown
Godfather of Soul, and quarterback of a rising-from-the-ashes Texas Longhorn football team.
I remember watching this in my dorm room in Moore-Hill, with the door open, and the eruption of screaming down the hallways as the ball was in the air.
And I agree w/ TCU-HF....by far my favorite pre-VY moment in Longhorn football.
That game
was played durring December graduation commencement ceremonies. I had a few friends that bought 2" tvs, solely for the purpose of watching the game durring their graduation ceremony.
it's coming on ESPN classic in a couple of days
check your schedules.

Thanks for the heads-up
I just set my DVR and I found it on Friday May 11th at 3pm. I think since its on ESPN Classic it should be the same for all of us...

that play
what a gutsy call on 4th and inches... J.M. will always have a measure of respect from me because of that.
I remember screaming at the TV, too.
A slightly more intimate view
'96 was my senior year and last year as a walk-on for UT's scout team defense...believe it or not, we actually practiced "roll-left" (don't remember the actual name of the play) a couple of times in practice the week leading up to the Big XII Championship.
Mackovic actually called that play a couple of times before in some previous games (Rice '95 if memory serves is one of them). It was originally meant for situations when we had a 4th and 1 deep in our opponents territory as a way to get an easy score, not just pick up the first down against a drawn in defense expecting a QB sneak.
Say what you will about Mackovic, but to call that play when you only needed an inch, on your own end of the field, knowing that failure probably meant losing and the wrath of an entire fan base and media contingent for eternity...that took some balls, big ones. It's like choosing to play a song by stroking wet wine glasses instead of going with the safer piano solo during the talent portion of a beauty pageant. You're either going down in flames or taking home the crown if you pull it off. There's no middle ground and no going back.
this is when
i first became a texas fan. i grew up a UH fan (yes, they exist...), which was great in the early 90's... but it wasn't that ingrained and i usually watched both texas and a&m, rooting for both. but it was this game (and particularly this play) that made me realize Texas was where my heart was.
