Texas Longhorns Game Review: Offense vs Arkansas State

We'll start our postgame review with a look at the offense.

Quarterback

McCoy did complete 22 of his 33 passes on the night, which is solid. And if we went by the first quarter alone, he'd have received an A or A+.

Unfortunately, Colt had a pedestrian game after the first quarter. After completing his first eight attempts of the game, McCoy completed just 14 of his next 25, including two interceptions.

What went wrong? It's hard to say exactly, but McCoy definitely struggled. In the second quarter, I thought McCoy was too loose, which is an odd thing to say. It looked like -  at least to me - things were coming so easily to McCoy in the first quarter that he let his concentration slip. He didn't step into throws. He failed to look off receivers.

In the second half, he had the opposite problem, appearing to be thinking too much. Balls wound up being forced, his progressions seemed to lack flow and good order.

Add it all up, and this was not the Colt McCoy that our Big 12 title hopes depend on. He's showed remarkable bounceback ability in his young career thus far, so it's not exactly a source of concern here, but we have to call this what it was - a bad performance.

Grade: D

Running Back

On the plus side, Jamaal Charles handled 27 carries just fine, making several inspiring runs in the process. I thought Jamaal looked great last night.

Unfortunately, he had nowhere to run more often than not. When we get into the gameplan grading, I'll talk more about the failings in this regard, though the grade here is for the tailbacks themselves, who were fine.

Mysteriously, Texas didn't use Ogbonnaya much (two carries) or McGee at all. The Longhorns stuck with Charles, even inside the five yard line, where we (like 2006) struggled to score.

Both Ogbonnaya and backup fullback Antwaan Cobb were used well in the receiving game, with CO being sent deep on a wheel route and Cobb being released into the flat for a first quarter touchdown.

Grade: B

Wide Receiver

They were open. They caught passes. They (mostly) blocked well.

Colt just missed a lot of throws, and you can't really fault the pass catchers for that. Nate Jones and Limas Sweed were both outstanding, and Quan had a decent night catching his little screen passes.

Beyond that, Colt didn't get the ball to anyone. This remains the team's greatest strength.

Grade: A-

Offensive Line

Well, Texas' line only allowed one sack and Colt wasn't really hurried much on the night. On the other hand, Texas averaged a paltry 3.1 yards per rush on the evening.

As with the tailbacks, we have to ask if it was a problem with the players, or a problem with the scheme. I don't think there's any way around saying that this is a structural, schematic problem. Greg Davis has figured out how to move the ball through the air with Colt McCoy, but he has not found a way to do so and have a healthy running game.

I simply find it difficult to believe that Texas' linemen are incapable of run blocking with better success than they are. I think this has to go mostly on the coaches.

Still, the run blocking in the red zone was bad once again. These guys aren't getting it done. It's time to get worried.

Grade: C-

Offensive Coaching

After a solid first quarter, the Texas offense was flat out bad. 340 yards of total offense is bad, and only 238 in the final three quarters is especially ugly.

I've always thought people go too far criticizing Greg Davis overall, but there are - without question - games after which I'm at the front of the line to take shots at him. And last night's is one of them.

Texas had eight months to figure out how to develop a better rushing attack around Colt McCoy and we didn't see anything last night to make me believe that we have. Most infuriatingly, Texas bumbled around inside the five yard line once again, poking at the goal line with Jamaal Charles on four straight plays:

1st and Goal, 3 yard line :: Jamaal Charles rush over left end for no gain

2nd and goal, 3 yard line :: Jamaal Charles rush up middle for 2 yards to the ASU1
3rd and Goal, 1 yard line :: Jamaal Charles rush over right tackle for no gain to the ASU1
4th and Goal, 1 yard line :: Jamaal Charles rush up middle for no gain to the ASU1

That is so pathetic, and worrisome, it's not funny. You could literally pick four plays at random from the playbook and it'd have been guaranteed to be a better four-play sequence. Furthermore, why keep poking at things with Charles? Why not try Ogbonnaya? Or McGee? Christ, hand it to Derek Lokey. Whatever you do, don't give it to the same guy four times in a row, calling four straight ahead run plays which our linemen are apparently incapable of executing.

This is a basic human concept which each of us employ in our daily lives. If I think up a new post series on checkers rule history, the first post of which doesn't receive any comments, I'm going to think long and hard about posting the second one. If I do post it and it also inspires no responses? There won't be a third.

What, then, is going on with the Texas running game? Lord knows we have enough data to conclude: the system is broken. Where, then, are the adjustments? What's the new plan? If there is one, we didn't see it last night, and it can't only be chalked up to lack of execution. Even if the players are to be blamed for not executing it right, the coaches are required to recognize this and either (1) coach them up to getting it right or (2) do something different - something they can execute.

The offensive struggles last night fall on two guys - McCoy and Davis. I expect better from McCoy going forward, but I'm downright concerned about Davis. He proved himself able to build a dynamic, historically great offense around Vince Young. He has yet to figure out how to build a consistently dynamic offense around McCoy. There have been flashes of what it could be, but nothing consistent enough to win a conference, let alone national, championship.

Perhaps worst of all, the time to "go back to the drawing board" has come and gone. Football season is here. TCU arrives in Austin in six days. And if Texas doesn't improve vastly from week one to week two on offense? We won't score enough to win.

My God You're Brilliant

I couldn't have summed it up better. I was certainly looking for someone else to carry the ball at the one. It's Davis and 2006 all over again. Fortunately, this wasn't Kansas State. But was it Davis that built an offense around Young or Young checking off and directing the team to scores? Re-visit your predictions. Maybe a four or five loss season!!

Just Sad

Those 4 JC carries brought back nightmares that I thought had been put to rest over the off-season.

Also, just curious, when Texas went into the 5 reciever set, which 5 were out on the field?

No subs

When they went to five wideouts, which happened at least five or six times, they simply sent Finley and Charles out wide along with the three regular wideouts.

Cosby, Sweed, and Jones got almost no rest last night b/c of the injuries/suspensions to Pittman and Shipley. And I could be wrong but I don't remember any of the three freshman wideouts playing at all on offense.

I would have loved...

to see Chiles come in for at least a couple of snaps on the red-zone series from the 3yl.  I know that's a lot of pressure for his first series, but it can't possibly have been worse than what we did.

The last time I remember us consistently scoring in those situations, it was due to a different athletic quarterback who was always able to run it in.  Why not try to let history repeat itself.

Hell, it worked for FL.

yes, sterling

You're exactly right, it did work for Florida.  And who knows, it could have worked for UT last night.  Unfortunately, Davis left his balls in the...oh wait, that's right, he didn't have any to begin with.  I'm sick of all this talk.  John Chiles getting dicked out of snaps last night is just one of many points where Texas didn't back up their off season promises.  And hell, after first and second down, it wasn't working; where's the harm in letting Chiles take a stab at it.  What the worse that could happen, he gets stuffed at the line of scrimmage?

Wow

It's like you're reading my mind, PB. How many times can one scream, "put in Chris Ogbannaya" at the TV?

You did forget one other positive, though: Colt McCoy's got a hell of a leg.

Well Put..

Obviously those 4 plays inside the 3 were extremely frustrating. Definitely would've liked to have seen anyone other than JC get at least one of those carries. The lack of Jermichael Finley was also somewhat disappointing. He should be wreaking havoc in the middle seam of the field. Colt's 1st quarter was excellent, and it was all downhill from there (for the most part). They will definitely need a better effort from him next week. The receivers (as expected) were excellent as you mentioned. I really liked the deep wheel to Ogbonnaya and of course the TD to Cobb. I hope that Davis will try to use them sort of the same way Pete Carroll used David Kirtman and Brandon Hancock (although I think Ogbonnaya and Cobb are better athletes than those two). Hopefully the old cliche about the most improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 is true... or else the 'Horns could be 1-1.

Game Plan

It seems that GD does a nice job analyzing the opponent during the week and scripts out a nice set of first and second series.  When the plays run out, the play  calling from the hip ends up failing. Hasn't Mack had to correct him (advise) at times going into half time?    I think he needs to get an overall game plan ie, if we get into this situation (goal line) we look at these plays, if we are getting beat here, this is what Colt is comfortable with.  On 3rd and 1 from the 1, how sweet ass would a Play Action Pass in the mix be? How about naked bootleg?  Or, as PB put, any other play you pick that's not run charles over and over.  We as fans should not be this good at critiquing play calling for as long as UT fans have been doing it. /GD rant

No Fire

Mack and his staff better light a fire in his team's ass before next week or it'll be a long season.  I may hate OU more than anyone here, but I can't help but respect the fact that they take care of business on the field.  PB, you're right we could've been Michigan last night but it still feels the same as a loss.

There were lots of negatives..

about the offense but I think it all boils down to the play of the O-line.  J Charles did a phenomenal job at working with what poor blocking he was given by breaking tackles and busting it around the corners when there was nothing up the middle. And the lack of a consistent running game kept some pressure on colt to have to make plays with his arm.  All in all, I think it was just a matter of being focused and knowing that every team wants to kick our ass so we can't take anyone lightly.

Running and Scheme

Glad to hear that JC was going to the outside because he had to, not because he was dancing around too much like last year. (It was hard to discern on PPV.) IF the blocking can get better, we can have a little hope—ASU's back showed how to use the zone read to bust some runs up the gut. Last night was just a replay of last season: JC being forced to run too much east-west, the defense pushing him towards the sidelines, and as a result, JC's speed being negated.
Should the interior line play improve, JC may be able to take it up the middle, turn on the jets, and finally put some explosiveness into the running game.

On another note, I'm guessing that (unfortunately) GD will use to the poor goal line running to justify not using the more traditional running formations at all. While the I formation failed there, it worked on Cobb's touchdown pass—so why not try it somewhere else than the goal line? Or what about trying some ace formation if he doesn't think we have the personnel for constant I form?

Just a thought...

I know I've said over and over that we need to try to use Chiles as a "Tebow" type threat, but.....

would it not be beneficial to put Chiles in on 1st and Goal at the 3? Even if he does nothing, we could still have handed the ball to JC and merely the "threat" of a QB keeper, I'm certain, would've allowed us to punch it in.

It absolutely amazes me that we cant score from 3 yards out. That's ridiculous and somebody needs to FIX THAT NOW.

I am guessing

that is what GD said after the fourth try to get in.

by Wells on Sep 4, 2007 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no power inside

Two examples best show the nature of the running game.

One was the pitch to JC around the right side, he is so fast he was 10 yards past the line before the secondary could react.
The second was the inability of JC to gain any yards inside on the goal line.

He's a gifted and fast open field runner who can make tacklers miss when he has the room and he can break some arm tackles but he is not very good between the tackles. Even with his new bulk he can't run over or push anyone back.

The coaches seem to be waiting for him to develop the ability to run inside instead of developing some fresh runners.Nothing has changed from last season to this one JC is not a power runner or a ball control back, he's more like a receiver in his running with the ball.

As far as the blocking scheme I think it has been developed to open big holes when the defense is more spread out like it would be in the middle of the field.

Anytime the defense packs the box the complex blocking scheme is a lot less effective. In that case they need to go to straight zone blocking and use their strength, just forget about pulling, traps or any such fancy shit. Just fire out and push the man in front of you back. Almost every team the longhorns lines up against is smaller and weaker they should get 2-3 yards easy.

But then you need a strong inside runner who has the strength and momentum to hit any LB and move him back the same 2-3 yards.
JC is not that runner.

Goal line

Agreed... definitely would've liked to have seen Ogbonnaya, Cobb, McGee, or even Lokey get a carry. You're also right about straight ahead zone blocking. There is no reason that the 'Horns line can't get a 2 yard push for a dive into the end zone.

by Sweed4Heisman on Sep 2, 2007 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

why,,

don't we just give it to antwan cobb on the goal line red zone. he looks big enough to take some punishment if the blocking is bad and still finish the play.

Peter...

...I warned you about listening/believing GK's assessment of the Horns. First he doesn't know the game and second he's a mouthpiece for MB. Everything, and I mean everything, is flowery and spring roses in his opinion.

Last night you caught a glimpse of reality.

Let's all hope and pray that Chykie Brown, Deon Beasley, Cedric Dockery, Buck Burnette, Muckelroy, Sergio Kindle and Jared Norton can help Mack Brown grow a pair, so he can trust their play by OU.

Peter

It seems that our offense was based around the pass, which I think some people were calling for on this blog.  When it stopped working, so did the offense.

That does not excuse the horrid goal line stand, which brought back all of the negativity of last year in four plays.  Maybe if that did not happen, and the game still ended as it did, we would not be complaining as much about GD as we would be about building an offense around a passing attack and then only having your QB play for a quarter.  But as it is, GD called the four plays so in general I think he deserves most of the negative comments this week, but I think other than the horrid red zone offense, the rest of the problems were more about the play of Colt than anything else.  Something I think Colt will correct next week.  As for the red zone running, maybe when Major is the OC we will see something better.
