Applewhite Impact

Though there are some who will be excited by a Major Applewhite return to Austin just because He's Major Applewhite, the potential hire excites me for a number of much more substantive reasons. The storylines I'm interested in:

Recruiting, generally. Major's already proven himself an able recruiter in his young career, helping Nick Saban haul in one of the country's best classes in 2008. More importantly, he's shown excellent ability to work the Texas high school network. Between Muschamp, Applewhite, and Mack Brown, the sky's the limit. Or is what USC is doing these days the limit? You get what I mean...

Recruiting, quarterback. A month ago, when Terrelle Pryor officially dropped Texas from his list, I noted that the focus now returned to Russell Shepard and Garrett Gilbert for the 2009 class. I wrote that though I would be happy with either quarterback, I'd prefer Shepard for his versatility and suitability for a run-pass hybrid spread offense. If Applewhite comes to Texas, my enthusiasm for Shepard only increases. (Gilbert seems better suited for a pro style offense, which Texas has abandoned - rightly - since Vince Young took over.)

The Future. Some have questioned why Applewhite would come to Texas as some sort of co-coordinator/running backs coach. It's a legitimate question, but the answer seems obvious: the grooming has begun. Assuming Major wants Texas like Texas wants Major, coming on board now - even while Greg Davis is here - makes sense. Whether this is a grooming for Offensive Coordinator, Head Coach, or both, if Austin is where Major Applewhite ultimately wants to be, there's no reason to wait.

And of course in the short term - as argued below - this also brings a fresh perspective to Greg Davis, who everyone agrees could use some new blood.

New Blood

And perhaps a signal/competition for GD from Mack?

Mack has never even remotely hinted that GD's job was in jeopardy while replacing the DC (with arguably the best young DC in college football) in a heartbeat, and with seemingly little effort.

Now he brings in a hungry, young, fan favorite nipping at Davis' heels.  To me, this move says that while Mack might not ever actually say it, GD's "Play-the-percentages/same ol' offense" just isn't going to cut it anymore.

Until you said that

I was not all in favor of Major coming back to Austin. But if what you're saying comes to pass, it could be the boost this complacent staff needs - not to mention what Muschamp will do for the defense.

Personally, I would have rather Major stayed at Rice as head coach after Graham left to get some seasoning without pressure, then join the UT staff as OC or head coach in a few years. But that's just a Rice alum daydreaming...

Major

We needed another young dynamic recruiter as well as a coach.  If that is Major then even better.

If Major wants to coach in Austin

then that would be one of those "something elses" that I mentioned in my comment.  I completely understand doing something others might percieve as odd for the sake of a dream job.

Some have questioned why Applewhite would come to Texas as some sort of co-coordinator/running backs coach.

I never knew that I constituted a plurality.  I didn't gain that much weight over Christmas.

I hate to nit-pick (but...)

I don't think there's an "h" in Shepard's name (Shepard vs. Shephard; see http://rivals100.rivals.com/viewpros...

Gilbert is the big target in '09

The 'horns need to get Gilbert and build an offense around him, whatever it is.  Shepard is supposedly a talent, but all indications are that Gilbert is the top recruit in the state and possibly the country.  When a kid like that wants to come to your school you get him.  Regardless of who they target, Mack's allstar class of recruiters will hopefully score some huge wins in the '09 class.  I can't repeat myself enough, the '09 class of recruits is in all likelihood the best group of guys to come out of the state of Texas in a long, long time.

I don't care how good he is...

I don't want to go through this whole "Colt is the man!/Colt can lick my balls, what a girl!/I like him but we can't win championships!" BS anymore.  Just recruit super fast dudes that occasionally throw the football.  Let Colt be the last of the lovable white dudes that are "no threat to run" (I think Colt could push 800 yards, maybe say 6 or 700 or so next year, but whatever, he's slow as hell compared to Chiles, so obviously not a threat.  Triple spin-move touchdown runs be damned!).  With that out of the way, we can just gripe about how bad some of them are at passing for their first year/year-and-a-half.  Then Applewhite will have whipped them into freaks.  Freaks from Hell!

For the record: I disagree

Not that your opinion doesn't have merit.  Gilbert is an exceptional talent.  But the spread almost cannot be defended when run properly.  Shepard is a follower of Vince and tries to immulate his every move on the field.  He is an extremely hard worker and will be a pretty good passer by the time he's done with college (with the right grooming).

Shepard is supposedly a talent, but all indications are that Gilbert is the top recruit in the state and possibly the country.

Also, for the record: Shepard is ranked higher than Gilbert in all of the rankings to date.  The last Rivals publication had Shepard coming in at #4 while Gilbert was #49.  But I expect the numbers to be much closer after Gilbert's Jr. season!  Dude's a beast.

/breath

All that to say this: This entire conversation could be irrelevant on Feb. 10th.  The first Jr. day happens and both are expected to get an offer.  Most believe Shepard will accept and those close to Gilbert say the same about him.  I put the chances at greater than 40% that both give verbals that weekend.

in case any of you has this much time on your hands, the AAS says that Major is on board this flight.  This guy is a rockstar, and it brings hope to dorky, non-athletes everywhere.

Rockstar indeed

The Muschamps had to ride in a lowly King-Air.

Job title

Applewhite's job title does not really matter. What counts is his role in designing the offense and formulating game plans. In any case it's a brilliant hire. Mack avoids having to fire Davis, but can bring in the help he needs. I've always imagined that Brown's reliance on Davis was for his organizational abilities and now he can run the offensive side of the program without having to run the offense. Applewhite only needs to do what he is now able to do buts gets to continue his preparation for stepping up when Mack steps down. With a successor in place, that can happen in its own time without disruption to the program.
