Muschamp A Done Deal?

That's what I'm hearing from two people I trust. I've learned to keep a cool distance from coaching search rumors, so take this with all necessary caveats.

If what's being said is true, though, we might get an announcement as early as tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed.

Update [2008-1-4 1:13:39 by HornsFan]: The Statesman is reporting that no deal has been reached. This as of five minutes ago. Again, coaching rumors are wrong more often than they're right. For his part, Auburn coach Tommy Tubberville says he doesn't believe Muschamp will leave. If I needed another reminder of why I try my best to stay out of this particular rumor game, this is is one of 'em.

In any case, for now it's "Stay tuned." If it's not Muschamp, then the next set of rumors will fly in just as fast. We'll try to keep pace with it, but this as unpredictable a game as there is.

Update [2008-1-4 1:19:57 by HornsFan]: Jesus, it's a good thing I'm on the west coast; this might go all night. After the Statesman refuted Orangebloods' original report, the Texas Rivals site has countered with an official story that the deal is done. By the way, this is all happening virtually simultaneously. Somebody's wrong here.

I called the one person I know who could give me a definitive statement about what's actually happening right now, but I can't reach him. So I'm stuck on the sidelines with everyone else. I'm hearing from solid sources the deal is done. Orangebloods is confident enough with what they know to run a story on the hire being made. But the Statesman says this thing's in limbo. Buckle up...

Update [2008-1-4 10:2:4 by HornsFan]: Still nothing official on this, but both Texas premium sites are reporting that Muschamp has agreed in principle to come to Austin. Without official confirmation from the UT athletics department or Muschamp's agent, the Statesman, DMN, and Houston Chronicle are all running stories that fall short of calling it a done deal.

I'll hold off on popping the champagne until the official announcement, no matter how good this looks right now.

Statesman is saying....

....that a deal has not yet been reached.

Here's what the Bevo Beat says...

A Texas official said late Thursday that there has been no deal reached to hire Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

An internet site and an Austin TV station reported that Muschamp had accepted an offer from Mack Brown earlier in the evening.

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville told local media that he didn’t believe Muschamp would end up coming to Austin.

But in all coaching searches, everything is fluid. Stay tuned.

Hook 'em

I think he is coming here.

It is just a matter of paper work. I could be wrong, though. Lets keep our hopes up.

Once we have

napped Muschamp for our DC, the next should be replace Greg Davis w/ Major. I can't wait to see him comes back home from Alabama to be our new OC. Hook'em!

1300 in Austin confirming, sort of

The guys on 1300 say it's a done deal, but they seem to be basing that conclusion on the weight of the published sources, rather than on independent information that contradicts the Statesman story.  They also say that Auburn media think he's leaving.

You get the feeling that the AAS

calls up Bill Little for a response. He says "no deal yet" -- and that is good enough for them.
Run the story with that response, despite every radio station and internet site claiming otherwise.

Good theory

Especially considering that Halliburton's name is on the story.

Holy hell...

From BevoSports:

Update: It is being reported (again by Orangebloods, best $10/month you can spend) that Muschamp was offered a "Jimbo Fisher deal." The Florida State offensive coordinator was lured away from LSU by the promise that he would be the coach to succeed the legendary Bobby Bowden. If this is true, Muschamp would likely have something in his contract that paid him a large buyout if he is let go or if someone other than himself is selected to follow Mack Brown as Texas coach. Biggest difference, Bowden is 78 and Mack is still a relatively young 56. (9:44 pm)

I guess we can afford the buyout if we decide we don't want him (Thank you Vince), but this is really locking us down on this guy.  Could be super good, could be bad... If true.  What does everyone else think?

doubtful

I heard Ketch say that yesterday and thats the kind of package that takes longer than 24 hours to put together.

Granted I dont remember a lot about the hiring process of a HC but it doesnt seem like you can circumvent the Regents like that.

Whats more likely is Mack told Muschamp that he only has a few years left in him as HC at Texas and that it'd be easier for Texas to hire someone within the family.  At that point Mack probably winked at him.

Makes sense

I've long felt that Mack wouldn't be a Bowden or Paterno in the sense that he coaches until he turns to dirt. What I've always thought would happen was that in a few years Mack is going to retire and then take the Athletic Director job when Deloss retires. Then Muschamp takes over as HC, which I like because he has the fire in him. He doesn't just clap a lot, he says stuff like "Boom! Motherfucker! Yeah!" And that's the type of coach we need, someone who's going to get "hyped". This and Darrell Scott saying he's a longhorn (apparently, eventhough I can't find it anywhere on Rivals website)as of a minute ago is huge for Texas.

where heard?

Where did you hear that Scott is for sure?  He said he wasn't committing until signing day.  I think you're confusing commitment for putting us in the lead.

Scott...

Doesn't sound like he's commited anywhere. And states he still has visits yet at Florida and LSU. Factor in his brother at CU and the hopes of signing him should be tempered.  Sounds like he's intent on milking the spotlight til national signing day, which is his perogative I guess.

Sorry

I didn't mean committed sorry. Was reading off a text message from a friend who gave a quick synopsis.
