Abrams and Johnson Key Win over Cyclones

Game Recap: This time the Horns fell behind in a different way: in the second half. Fortunately, the Longhorns (19-4, 6-2) chipped away at Iowa State’s 13 point second half lead over the final 16 minutes and eventually outlasted the Cyclones, 71-65, in overtime. Rick Barnes got huge games from AJ Abrams and Gary Johnson, who made up just enough for the Longhorns to overcome a forgettable performance from DJ Augustin.

For the first time in many games, Texas actually took the lead from the opening tip but couldn’t capitalize on the Cyclones offense woes. The Longhorns led just 6-0 after four minutes of action. After a sloppy first half of turnovers and missed opportunities by both teams, ISU led 31-27 at the break. It was obvious that the Horns were the superior team. However, it was also obvious that things weren’t going their way. Texas missed point blank shots in the lane, turned the ball over at least seven times, shot just 31% from the floor, and allowed way too many easy looks after slow defensive rotations off high pick and rolls. Talent advantage or not, the Horns were locked in a battle.

Texas opened the second half repeating the same errors and fell behind by 42-29 with 16 minutes left in regulation. Fortunately, AJ Abrams kick started the offense and the whole team picked up their intensity on defense. Texas began to cut into the double digit lead possession after possession. Abrams nailed three three-pointers and scored 11 of the Horns next 13 points to cut the lead to 48-42 with six minutes left. Then, it was Gary Johnson’s turn. GJ’s back to back buckets and another three by AJ brought the Horns even closer. Solid free throw shooting (8/8) by AJ, DJ, and Gary over the final minutes helped send the game into overtime. Also worth mentioning is the Horns’ defensive effort. ISU had been getting multiple looks at the basket off long rebounds. The Horns did a better job on the glass and with post defense as Juri Hubalek sat with four fouls. ISU went cold as Texas began to hold the Cyclones to just one shot per possession and held ISU to just seven points over the final eight minutes of regulation.

After a missed AJ jumper, the game headed to overtime. With ISU in foul trouble and having just blown a double digit lead, Texas looked to be in good shape. The defensive intensity continued as ISU scored just two points in the five extra minutes and repeatedly settled for long, contested jumpers after Texas played solid half-court defense for 30+ seconds. Now, Texas wasn’t exactly spectacular on offense in overtime either, but they did just enough. Gary finished near the rim off a nice feed from DJ, and Augustin hit one of his few field goals of the afternoon to put Texas up by four points with just 38 seconds left. Texas easily held on from there to grab their third straight victory, their second straight on the road, and improve their Big XII record to 6-2.

The outcome was: Enormous. Winning on the road in conference play is never easy, but this is one the Horns should win and did. Texas is in the midst of a very difficult stretch of games with both games this week coming on the road, a home tilt with Kansas, and another road trip to Waco next Saturday. The win over Oklahoma sent this team on an upward trend and the Longhorn couldn’t afford to give back the momentum now.

The Horns have now finished the first half of conference play 3-0 at home and 3-2 on the road. The uneven split means that Texas now gets five of their last eight at home with road trips to Baylor, Kansas State, and Texas Tech. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I can’t help it. This road win combined with the win in Norman on Wednesday allows my pipe dream of 12-4 in conference to remain possible.

The Offensive MVPs were: AJ Abrams and Gary Johnson. AJ gets the nod because he single handedly shot the Horns back in the game. Abrams finished with 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting, 7-of-10 from three, five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and zero turnovers in 42 minutes. I have been one of the first ones to gripe about his shot selection at times this season. Not today. This was one of his best overall performances, on offense and defense. If he doesn’t get hot from behind the arc, there is no way we win. Period.

Gary Johnson was just as important, and this was without a doubt his best performance as a Longhorn: 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting, 5-of-6 from the free throw line, and nine rebounds. Johnson looked so much more comfortable. He rotated well on defense, showed effectively on ball screens, and was active on the glass. I also liked his patience on offense. If his defender pressured him, he lowered his left shoulder, powered into the paint, and finished with his right hand. When his defender played off him, he calmly raised up and knocked down the baseline jumper. Very impressive. The performance we saw today was exactly what we’d hope to see from Gary since he committed to the Horns last spring. BTW, Gary apparently broke his nose in practice on Friday and decided to play without the Rip Hamilton-like mask.

The Defensive MVP was: Second Half and OT Defense. The first half effort on defense was simply poor. ISU shot 41% from the floor and consistently got good looks at the basket off high pick and rolls, offensive rebounds, and turnovers. After the Horns allowed ISU to score the first seven points of the second half, the effort and the results changed. The Texas guards pressured the basketball on the perimeter which resulted in turnovers and more difficulty feeding the post. The Texas big men were more physical with their defense near the paint and did a better job on the defensive glass. For the game, ISU committed 15 turnovers, shot 36.5% from the floor, 22% from three, and scored just two points in overtime. With the game on the line, the Texas defense made the difference.

The Freshman Evaluation tonight was: Not Relevant. If you exclude Johnson, who we mentioned above, Clint Chapman and Alexis Wangmene were not factors this afternoon. Chap played just four minutes, committed a turnover, and watched a DJ Augustin pass whiz out of bounds. Wingman managed to commit four fouls in his seven minutes of play.

Three Things: (1) This team is getting better. That may be an odd thing to write after the Horns had to go to OT against one of three worst teams in the conference, but it’s true. Coming into this year most thought Texas would be able to put up tons of points but with their small guards and lack of experienced big men would struggle on defense. That has been the case through most of the year, but things are improving. Gary Johnson is coming along nicely, and AJ, DJ, and Mason are starting to do a better job of pressuring the basketball and contesting three pointers. Next, the mid-season free throws adventures are starting to disappear. Only Damion James still appears to be struggling at the line. Even the rebounding concerns are starting to become less of an issue. Rick Barnes coached teams historically have gotten better as the season as gone on and this one is no exception.

(2) Very tough day for DJ. This just wasn’t his game. Augustin began the game at attacking the paint relentlessly. Unfortunately, he was totally ineffective once he got there. DJ forced too many tough shots in the lane, relied on his fade-away too often, and rarely looked to dish to a post player. He even struggled shooting the three. DJ was just 1-of-7 from behind the arc and missed more than a couple of looks that he normally cans. It is obvious that defenses are sagging into the lane and helping with an extra defender when he enters the lane. DJ needs to adjust and start to kick the ball back outside for open threes or dish to Connor, Damion, or Gary before he takes that final dribble in the lane. This was one of those games when we sorely missed reliable guard play from off the bench. It would have been really nice to sit DJ for a few minutes and let him catch his breath.

(3) Bench play will be needed on Monday. I just finished watching Kansas fast break their way to victory over Baylor, 100-90. Against Iowa State, I thought Texas needed to push the tempo. The opposite may be true against the Jayhawks. DJ played 44 minutes, AJ played 42 minutes, and only six Longhorns played more than seven minutes. With a quick 48 hour turnaround and our lack of depth, the Texas bench may have to play some extended minutes on Monday night. That doesn’t sound good...

With Wisconsin, Gtown, Mich St all losing

this week, Monday's game should be a Top 10 matchup. My early keys of the KU game are:

  1. Transition defense
  1. Holding them to one shot per possession
  1. Guard the three point line decently (KU did not make a single three in the BU game but still scored 100 points... yikes)
  1. Make sure everyone is involved in the offense. James, Johnson, and Connor (Pittman if he gets time) all need to be able to get feeds inside from DJ/AJ/Mason and they need to be able to finish inside. Also, James and Connor need to be able to hit a couple of outside shots as well. Will the Good Connor show up for this game?
  1. Solid, efficient shooting from DJ and AJ

Defending the 3 may not be a big issue

Connor is probably better off shooting outside.  I think he may have little hands because he has a hard time grabbing rebounds and entry passes.

Augustin and Abrams will have to be very hot for the horns to win.

I doubt the horns will be great at holding KU to one shot per possession.

If Augustin decides to dish a lot after penetrating, it will be tough for KU to deal with.

Mich St Did Not Lose This Week

The Spartans lost last Saturday, before the current poll was released.  And doubtful the Hoyas drop 5 spots after a loss on the road to a ranked opponent.

The Horns will be sniffing Top 10 fumes at #11 when they go against soon-to-be #3 Kansas.

Should UT pull off the sweep this week:

First, I'll be ecstatic.
Second, they'll probably be ranked #7 the following Monday, with the likely losses ahead of them.

UT playing solid, winning ball these next two weeks gets them to a #2 seed in the tournament.

Unfortunately, this is not the same squad with the same chemistry we saw earlier this season.  Yesterday's game against ISU shows how suspect this team is.  They have it in them to lose in the opening round to a #14 seed as much as they have in in them to beat a #2 or #3 seed.  Without an inside presence it is highly doubtful we see the Horns in the Sweet Sixteen this year.  Johnson and Pittman need to grown up in a hurry these next few weeks and in the Big XII tourney for us to go deep.

minutes

how did dj and aj both exceed 40 minutes if there are only 40 minutes in the game total? Either way, i think DJ needed a rest during this game, and AJ needed one also, but he was too crucial.  I sincerely hope they are both fresh for Kansas, i will be there.

overtime

was how DJ and AJ exceeded the 40 minutes.

AJ created his own shot

I recall one of the gripes about AJ was that he could not create his own shot.  2 or 3 of those 3-pt shots he made were from a stepback fakeout in which he single-handedly created his own shot.  Was a beautiful sight to say the least.

Re:

That was a beautiful, NBA-ready move that he executed a few times during the game. Amazing.

  1. There are no bad wins, so this must have been good. Why is it that we always seem to make an average player for the opponent (Jiri Hubalek) look like an all star? I just can't believe that Czecks are uncommonly inspired to beat Texas. Maybe we decide to clamp down on the best talent and let the others beat us. But Hubalek did beat on us good. If he had gotten any help, they'd have won.
  1. This was not just a bad shooting game for DJ, it was the latest in a series of bad shooting games. Essentially he has two shots--the open 3 pointer and the penetration move. The 3 pointer has simply not been dropping, even when wide open. I've got to think there is a mechanical problem there. His penetrations have been getting him freethrows, but not many baskets. In fact a lot of them look like prayers. If he's going to succeed at the next level, he needs to dish more of those off -- and his big men need to expect that.
  1. We finally saw the real Gary Johnson and just in time. If he continues this way, by tournament time he will be a dominant force. Say, is it time yet to give him a nickname? How about "GJ"? Latest in the line of *J stars at UT.

Nice recap

Also:

Third straight game where Abrams has shot well.

Horns actually have enough depth to give Abrams and Augustin some rest, just play Mason at guard rather than small forward for those minutes where either Abrams or Augustin are resting. It is really tough to get the ball inbounds to Augustin at the end of a game lately because (sometimes) he does not have enough left in his gas tank to break real fast to a potential inbound pass.

Gary played 34 minutes, a new horn high for him.  It would probably be easier for Gary to score if he got the ball at the high post.

Dex should be getting more minutes.  the horns had no answer for big (but not fast) Hubalek (24 points in 31 minutes).  Why not give Dex a chance to guard him and also draw some fouls? Why Chapman was played rather than Dex is beyond me.  Dex has much better hands to catch the ball, rebounds better, scores better, and defends better.  Why JD Lewis played at all is beyond me.  There is no need for a 3 guard lineup when one of the guards is JD.  Those are precious minutes that could be used to develop the young big men.

Dex is a major talent who seems to be moving very well now.  He needs game experience desperately.  Dex looked explosive on the drop step move for a thunder dunk where he got called for traveling.

Dex might want to simplify his moves a bit (i.e. do something that requires no dribbling).  When low posting on right side of the lane, he could simply pivot a bit on his left foot (so he is at a 45 degree angle WRT the board) and shoot a jump hook off the board.  He can also fake the jump hook and then execute one of the following moves (none of which require dribbling):

  • just continue to pivot until he faces the lane and shoot a right handed near layup (or maybe even be close enough to slam with his right hand).
  • up and under (finishing with a left handed slam)
  • reverse pivot and step for a left handed slam.

Barnes needs to do a better job of developing the big men and incorporating them into the offense.  Not just because it is good basketball and helps win games but also for recruiting reasons.  The way the ISU coach has been able to turn Hubalek from a perimeter oriented big man to a potent post player is impressive.  The way ISU was able to move the ball around and get the ball inside was impressive.  What potential big man recruit is going to be impressed at the way Barnes teaches big men and incorporates them into the offense this season?

the horns need to do more interior passing by getting the ball to a big man at the high post who can then pass to another big man flashing down low.  Gary and Damion did this a couple of times against ISU and it worked great.  the horns need to do more of that.

good thoughts

a note on JD Lewis: in his few seconds in the game, he still passed into the post better than DJ does.

Thanks

I am nearly certain that Augustin could average 10+ assists per game if he just goes for it.  By dishing off more often when he penetrates it will make it much tougher to defend him when he does shoot.  I think this will also increase his NBA value because a good pass first point guard (eg: Steve Nash) makes all of his teammates better offensive players.  It will also make a huge difference in the development of guys like Damion, Gary, Dex, Wingman, and Chapman.

Pick and Roll

What's up with Augustin never passing to the roll man?  The pick and roll has become so easy for opponents to defend, yet it is still the main play on offense.  I wish Barnes would figure out something else to do with that play.

by funk on Feb 10, 2008 4:34 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Goal is to create mismatch for Augustin

I think the goal of the pick (for the 2008 horns) is to create a mismatch for Augustin rather than get the ball to picker as he rolls to the bucket.  This is fine part of the time but, as you point out, opponents have figured this out and just focus on stopping Augustin's drive.

I think also that when Connor is the picker, there is a lack of confidence (probably well founded) in his ability to catch the pass as he rolls to the bucket.

If Gary, Damion, or Dex were rolling, they would probably do an excellent job of catching the pass from Augustin and finishing.  This would also be a much easier way for them to score than having to make slick low post moves (i.e. they would not have to create their own shots).

by Kafka on Feb 10, 2008 8:08 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Ehh

You would hope it would work that way, but there have been others besides Connor doing the rolling with similar results (like at the end of the game with Johnson and James in there and no Connor).  I don't think it has that much to do with Connor's inability to catch the ball.  Augustin just seems to be too timid to make that pass.

You are right that it would probably work better with Gary or Damion, but I just see Sexy Dex getting the ball and plowing into the help side post defender for a charge.  The play only really works with Connor (as far as getting the ball to him) if he picks and pops.

by funk on Feb 10, 2008 8:50 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Augustin timidity

Augustin seems tough as nails to me so I figured the reason he does not make the pass is that he lacks confidence in the target (relatively speaking).  Do you think he is afraid that he can't make the pass?  You could be right but it is just hard to believe that a guy as great at ball handling as Augustin would lack confidence in his passing.  A point guard just has to be able to make those passes.

I am a big Dex fan but I recognize that it would be quite possible for Dex to run over somebody after he catches the pass on the pick and roll.  Of course that assumes help would arrive soon enough which may or may not be the case.

The pick and pop works pretty well but is a much easier pass since it is going away from the bucket rather than toward the bucket (like a typical pick and roll pass).

Great recap, AW.

It is fun to watch this team improve. They knew they were in a tough road battle, but they didn't give in. They took there time and fought back to tie the game.  I wish AJs jumper in regulation had gone, that would have sealed an all-star game from him. His line is what we have been looking for all year from him. If you are gonnna shoot 10 3's by God, make 6 or 7 why dontcha.

DJ struggled. I completely agree that he needs to kick it more from the lane. DJ needs to go to the lane with the intention of passing and if a lay-up is there take it.  He started forcing shots and it got ugly. 5-22. 5-22.  He's a stud, this shouldn't happen again.

The defense is really working together and moving much better. With Gary finally learning to rotate and not over pursue things are clicking for him, and his impact is really felt defensively.

On the offensive end G-unit had a solid night. He will start making some of the short shots he missed, but his free throw shooting is promising, and he is real tough to guard.

It is nice to see us start clicking as Kansas rolls into town.  If we put a full 40 minutes together, the Jayhawks are gonna have a fun visit to A-town.

We got spoiled early.

I don't why but this team played some of it's better ball early on against Tennessee and UCLA. Those games  were notable because each (starting) player had good to great games.

We seem to be in the doldrums where you can count on some player to have good or great games but then others have bad games. We see DJ finally have a bad game as Gary Johnson seems to getting his game legs and AJ has found his shot. With DJ playing down, there is no one left who team can count on for consistent play.

I guess we will see more games trying to guess who will be up and who is not. And just hope they all can get together on the up swing for the tournament.

by Xerxes on Feb 10, 2008 3:48 PM CST   0 recs

Overachieved Early

PB and I both thought that the Horns would be a dangerous team come March. They entered this season without KD, without any real experience on the front line, and without any depth at guard after Balbay got injured. Then, the Tennessee and UCLA games came. We shot the lights out early, AJ was red hot, teams couldn't figure out how to defend DJ, and we survived with mostly our top five players.

You are exactly right; we got spoiled early. I will also add that we overachieved. The early wins over top ten teams allowed us to dream big: a Big XII championship, a protected seed, and an easier path to San Antonio. Those were probably unrealistic dreams.

Now, we are getting better and could reach 12-4 in the conference but with K State playing in the North and getting eight games against Iowa State, Nebraska, Colorado, and Missouri, the Wildcats will finish ahead of the Horns in the final standings. Best case scenario I see is 12-4 and third place about a 3-4 seed in the tournament and a draw away from physical, post oriented teams.

It has to do with the guards

If Mason, DJ and AJ are all hitting threes, this team is really had to defend, because you can't help on DJ driving and have to take him one on one, which is what happened at Tennessee.
This midseason funk seems to be that one of the three guards is not hitting every game, and that lets teams sag in and clog the paint.
