#12 Texas and #4 Kansas Set to Clash on 'Big Monday'
Texas (19-4, 6-2) gets a shot tonight at 8 pm on ESPN to beat the best team in the country, in my opinion. I’m not going to go through Kansas’ entire schedule but will make a few points about what makes them so good and then get to the keys to the game.
#4 Kansas is 23-1 overall, 7-1 in the Big XII, and rated as the top team in the country by Pomeroy. If you don’t think the Jayhawks are loaded, then you haven’t been paying attention. Bill Self’s club has four future pros among their starting five in Darnell Jackson, Mario Chalmers, Brandon Rush, and Darrell Arthur.
Darnell Jackson is a 6-8, 250 pound bruiser who is averaging 12 points per game and a team leading seven rebounds per game. Darnell is much more active this year that he was last year and will be a tough, physical match-up for the Texas bigs.
Mario Chalmers is the best defensive guard in the Big XII, if not the nation, and not too shabby on the offensive end either. Super Mario can light it up from three on a given night (47%), is quick enough to take his man off the dribble, and is an excellent passer at five assists per game. Chalmers doesn’t have to score to control the game. The best match-up of the night will be Chalmers on DJ Augustin in the half court.
Brandon Rush can’t seem to get out of Lawrence. He toyed with the idea of turning pro two years ago and did turn pro a year ago before a knee injury forced him back to college. Texas fans will wish that he was already in the NBA. Rush is a streaky shooter who leads the team in made three-pointers. He has also improved his mid-range game and his ability to get all the way to the rim. Limiting Rush’s transition three-pointers will be crucial for the Horns. It will also be interesting to see if Rush draws the defensive assignment on AJ Abrams or if Self elects to have Rush guard Mason and play help defense on all dribble drives. If Rush does guard AJ, Abrams will have to find a way to get clean looks over the 6-6 underrated defender.
The fourth future pro is also, in my opinion, the most dangerous. He will be coming off a 33 23 point, 10 rebound performance in the win over Baylor. Darrell Arthur is a true back to the basket forward who also has the ability to step out and knock down the mid-range jumper. Arthur is listed at 6-9 but has a much longer wingspan which allows him to rebound outside of his area and block shots. I don’t think Damion James has the height to guard Arthur on the low blocks. I expect to see Barnes use Dexter Pittman, Alexis Wangmene, and Gary Johnson instead, but, honestly, Texas doesn’t have anyone that can guard Arthur one-on-one.
The fifth starter is senior Russell Robinson. Robinson is another tremendous defensive player. He can score as well but usually doesn’t have to. He is averaging over two steals per game and will probably give AJ fits.
If the starting five wasn’t formidable enough, the Jayhawks have more. 5-11 sophomore Sherron Collins comes off the bench for 20+ minutes and provides KU with another gear in their transition game. Other than maybe North Carolina’s Ty Lawson, there isn’t a faster player with the basketball. Collins averages nearly ten points per game and is another solid defender on the perimeter. 6-11 Sasha "Caveman" Kahn provides another big body off the bench while 6-4 senior Rodrick Stewart adds even more depth at guard.
The Jayhawks are deep, talented, and balanced. Eight Jayhawks average more than 13 minutes per game; four of their starters will be playing in the NBA next season; and they have four players averaging in double figures, with their top scorer (Arthur) at just 13 ppg.
KU can score inside and out, in transition and in the half-court. They can beat you with their prolific offense or simply by shutting down yours. Memphis may be undefeated but the Jayhawks are the best team in the country.
So, how do the Horns win? Here are a couple of things that must go right for Texas to pull off the upset.
Keys to the Game
(1) Slow down KU’s transition game. Their half-court execution is good enough, but if Texas allows the Jayhawks transition points off turnovers, poor shots, or long rebounds, then this one could get ugly quickly. Barnes has a dilemma though. If he goes with three guards and two bigs, then Texas will get very few second looks off offensive rebounds unless they send an extra person or two to the offensive glass. But if three or four are crashing the glass, then the transition game will be wide open for KU. I expect Barnes to play three bigs for most of the game. I won’t be surprised if James, Johnson, and Atchley all start. Texas will also need quality minutes from Dexter Pittman and Alexis Wangmene as well, especially if anyone gets into early foul trouble.
(2) Defend the three-pointer. AJ and DJ are getting better at this but defending the long ball remains a weakness. KU scored 100 points against Baylor without making a single three-pointer. If Rush or Chalmers or Collins or Robinson get hot from three, look out.
(3) Protect the ball. This one is a little odd considering Texas turns the ball over less than anyone in the nation. However, the Horns haven’t faced anyone as good as the Jayhawks are on defense. They are especially talented on the perimeter. Chalmers, Robinson, and Rush will all have size and length advantages on the perimeter. The Texas guards cannot afford to get sloppy with the ball.
(4) Get a big game from AJ. Abrams has shot the ball well recently while DJ has not. Hopefully, the Texas coaches have pointed out to DJ that he has been over-penetrating and needs to look for the pass instead of forcing tough shots in the lane. Abrams should be the recipient of some of those passes. Texas is so much better when AJ is shooting the ball well and probably not good enough to beat KU if he is not.
It may sound like I don’t think the Horns have a chance. That is not true, but I don’t feel like Texas has too many advantages in this one, outside of the home court. A lot of things will need to go right for the Horns but playing at home makes this one possible.

The biggest story, however...
is that Mario Chalmers has the most underrated name in sports. Not only can you call him "Super Mario" but you can also tap into that same video game theme by quoting Ralph Wiggum's malapropism regarding Superintendent Chalmers and calling him "Super-Nintendo Chalmers."
Vastly underrated. I wish he played for us. The fact that he's good as basketball doesn't hurt either, but I mostly want him for the name.

Super Nintendo Chalmers
That's exactly what popped into my head too. It's funny that I haven't watched the show in ten years and I still quote it half a dozen times per day.

You're right
Let's hope the drum is rocking tonight. It better be.
I'm thinking we can win if AJ and DJ shoot lights out from behind the arc. 13-20 b/w them.
Our defense is much improved but Kansas will still give us fits.
I get so hyped up on game days, you gotta believe.
HOOK 'EM!!!! Juck the Fayhawks!!

My big concern
Kansas' perimeter defense is tremendous, while we sink or swim with our guard play. Throw in a formidable Jayhawk frontcourt against our young bodies on the interior and this looks like trouble.
I'm sadly skeptical about tonight. Here's to hoping the 'Horns surprise me.

Just to pump a little sunshine
I though the same thing two years ago and we put that game away before halftime.

What time should I get there?
What time do people usually start lining up for games like this? I remember going to the A&M game last year around 5 o clock for an 8 o clock start and not getting in. Was that just because it was A&M or is it like that for all of the huge games? Would I be better off trying to get into the Mezannine level to ensure that I get in?

Self
I think Bill Self's the best program builder in America. He recruited Deron Williams, Luther Head and Dee __ (forget his name), plus that white dude who was pretty good in the paint. Bruce Webber got to coach them when they were juniors for that near national championship run, but that was Self's team.
And not that it's hard to recruit at Kansas, but Self didn't take long to have the Jayhawks absolutely loaded with NBA talent. And, to his credit, his guys usually stay more than one or two years.
Throw in the success he had at Tulsa (sweet 16 appearance) and I think he's the best recruiter and team builder in the country.
He hasn't won the big one yet and has struggled at times with mid-game adjustments in the big games but only a fool would say he's not a superlative coach.

correction
He made an elite 8 at Tulsa.
And I forgot to mention he took Oral Roberts to the tourney despite them only winning 5 or 6 games the year he arrived.

A KU fan's perspective
Hi all. I'm not a Texas fan but I love this blog. Great content and great participation by UT fans. Anyway, I thought I'd try to give you some objective opinions from the opposing fanbase. Opinions that will probably raise your hopes for tonight.
First off, I've seen a lot of praise about KU's perimeter defense and the defensive pressure our guards put on the ball. Well, lately our perimeter defense hasn't been that good. Robinson and Chalmers are great at stealing the ball but their feet are not as quick as their hands. Lately, quick guards have been blowing past Mario and Russell. Look for Augustin to have his way tonight.
Collins is our quickest guard. Against Baylor he was fantastic but he had struggled of late with turnovers and eratic shooting.
KU's transition game is largely keyed off of its defense. As noted in the game preview, protecting the ball is key for UT. That said, KU has not been forcing teams to turn the ball over in conference play like they did earlier in the season.
Arthur is coming off his best game of the year (it was actually 23 points - not 33 points) but he is prone to foul trouble. If I was UT I would go right at him and see if you can get him in some early foul trouble.
A huge key for KU is staying with Abrams and keeping a hand in his face (although he's shown he can hit a 3 from anywhere on the court whether he's guarded or not).
As far as defending the 3, UT needs to focus on Chalmers (our best shooter), Rush, and Collins. Robinson will shoot the 3 but you probably want him to shoot it.
KU tends to have trouble with big men who can shoot the 3-ball so Atchley could cause problems if he's hitting from outside.
KU's first option on offense is to always get the ball inside. Some teams have packed their defense in and forced KU to beat them from outside so I would not be surprised if UT shows some zone tonight.
For a veteran team, KU still turns the ball over too much for my liking.
Believe it or not, KU is not a strong rebounding team despite its size on the interior. A key for KU will be limiting 2nd chance points for UT. Some teams, out of respect for our transition game, don't crash the offensive boards but I think KU can be beat on the offensive glass.
Should be a great game. Let's hope both teams bring their A game and leave it all on the court.
Good luck.

Whew, a clay toe or two.
The couple of times I saw KU play it looked liked 7 on 5, they were everywhere and the other team had no space to play.
even the loss to K State they didn't look bad K state was just a bit better.
This is one of those games if all the Horns play well they have a chance, if any of the starters are flat the other 3-4 guys won't be able to make up the difference.

James and Atchley
both of these guys need to hit their threes tonight.
And if I'm Barnes, I'm putting Pittman in the game right when Self decides to put Shao Kahn in the game. Dexy can muscle him up.
It does look like going zone would be a good idea. 2-3 zone would be good, since KU is struggling from three anyway.
Johnson/James/Connor need to come up big on the boards tonight as well.
Will Mason give us anything on offense? I'm sure they'll give him looks because they're too worried about DJ and AJ.

i was thinking the same thing
Connor hasn't really been a big factor in games of late, but he was HUGE against UCLA. i'm not TOO concerned about rebounding. for their size, the Longhorns are a remarkably good rebounding team (A&M only edged us out by one rebound, and we outrebounded UCLA). i'm most concerned about people just hitting their shots. it seemed in all these games recently that we've struggled early and had to fight tooth and nail to get back in it, we just haven't been hitting our shots, and it's not because the looks haven't been there. guys were just struggling to find their rythm. if our four primary scorers (AJ, DJ, Atchley, and James) can somehow all find their groove in the same game, i think we can beat anybody, especially with the home court advantage.
i'm stoked for this one. as big as that UCLA win was, this is the signature win we'd love to get to push us back in the discussion of the elite teams in the country. wish i could make it to the drum as well. hopefully all of you that will be there can get the place rocking right from the opening tip for all us that will be watching at home.

Darrell Arthur
I got to see "Shady" play when he was in high school. He and (Baylor's) Kevin Rogers were downright awesome when they were leading Dallas South Oak Cliff back to prominence. Should be a fantastic game tonight.
