It was a big weekend for 22 members of the 2012 Texas recruiting class, as the remainder of the freshman class arrived on campus. The Texas Gang Or Die movement has now officially arrived in Austin.
The late surge from the Longhorns to finish out the 2012 class, including the commitment from Louisiana's Torshiro Davis, wasn't enough to vault Texas past Nick Saban and his rolling Tide. Click through the link to find out just how close Texas came.
SBNation recruiting editor Bud Elliott takes a look at which schools have the highest-rated commits and opines on how the rankings could influence future championships.
It was quite the run that Texas had with FSU commit Christo Kourtzidis, the tight end from California who receive an in-home visit from Major Applewhite on Tuesday night, decided Wednesday that he would visit Texas, then decided Thursday that he would not be making the trip after all. Score one for Jimbo Fisher and the Florida State coaching staff, who likely worked since Tuesday to keep Kourtzidis from visiting Austin and apparently managed to do so prior to an in-home visit Thursday evening. So that's that for that, leaving Mesquite Horn tight end Vincent Hobbs as the only remaining target at the position. Hobbs will be visiting Austin this weekend, but it's not clear at this time whether or not he will receive an offer.
TCU commit Daje Johnson has been on the Texas radar for some time, but communication had died down in recent weeks between the Pflugerville Hendrickson product and the hometown Longhorns. That all changed on Wednesday when the Texas coaching staff reached out to Johnson to bring him in for an official visit the last weekend before National Signing Day. It had appeared in recent days that Johnson had moved on, so it's unclear at this point how receptive he is to Texas other than being willing to visit.
Florida State commit and Texas target Mario Edwards is the new top recruit in the country by 247Sports following strong performances in the UA game and in the practices leading up to the game. He will decide between Florida State, LSU, and Texas following visits to both Tallahassee and Baton Rouge over the next weeks. The top Longhorn commit in the rankings is DT Malcom Brown, who prevented some serious challenges for offensive linemen in the UA game as well and comes in at no. 7 nationally, ahead of highly-touted recruit Eddie Goldman.
Add another award to the long list of honors for Texas commit Johnathan Gray, who was named US Air Force National Football Player of the Year on Tuesday. The real question is whether there is any room left on the mantle in the Gray household. The guess here is no.
Orangebloods reported late Friday night that EMCC QB Bo Wallace will not in fact visit Texas on Saturday despite multiple reports throughout the week that he was planning a visit. At this point, it's difficult to say exactly why Wallace isn't taking the visit, but it's possible that either Connor Brewer let the staff know he wasn't happy about the possibility of Wallace joining the mix, or that Case McCoy is planning on staying even though rumors continue to swirl about his future in the program.
