Reports: Sherrod Harris Leaving Team

Several outlets this morning (Dave Campbell's Texas Football is the Twitter link above) that senior back-up quarterback Sherrod Harris is considering leaving the team this fall. If Harris does depart -- and there are no signs of anything imminent on his Twitter page, at least -- the Longhorns would be left with two freshman back-ups at the position, Connor Wood and Case McCoy, both of whom enrolled early last spring. As if Garrett Gilbert wasn't under enough pressure already, this only increases the need to keep him healthy and could play some role, if relatively minor, in making sure Texas does actually provide more than lip service to running the football better and more consistently this season. Attempting to find a silver lining here, and not to dump on Harris, who has by all reports been a quality member of the program, but he's just never shown anything throwing the football and looked inconsistent throughout the spring, so there may not be a big drop-off from Harris to Wood, the expected leader among the two freshman.

It's (Semi) Official: Wood Commits ($)

No confirmation yet from Wood, but Orangebloods is now reporting Connor Wood as committed to the Longhorns, a move he apparently made yesterday evening (Inside Texas reports the same ($)). If true, recruiting is now done at the quarterback position, with Texas securing commitments from the only two they pursued. Wood fits perfectly into the Longhorn offense, but will have long wait ahead of him until Garret Gilbert leaves campus and allows him a chance to start. Great news for the Longhorns, though. Update: Now confirmed ($) by BOB, which spoke to Wood this evening.

Wood Takes Final Visit ($)

2010 quarterback Connor Wood took in the campus of Texas A&M on Wednesday during an unofficial visit. The Aggies offered the Houston Baptist signal caller, who said the trip to College Station was his final before attempting to make a decision soon. Wood has two siblings attending A&M and the Aggies might actually figure into the equation. With Wood attending a Baptist school and his siblings there, it raises some questions about whether he has a conservative mindset that might make Norman or College Station more attractive than intensely liberal Austin. Pure speculation there, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Wood Also Considering OU

No real surprise there, as OU has been in the mix for Wood, who attended their Junior Day recently. A little bit of a surprise, though, is the revelation that Wood wants to major in petroleum engineering and likes the Mewbourne School at OU. Also interesting to note is that Wood wants to make a decision in the next two weeks and is being recruited by Josh Heupel and Major Applewhite.
