Fort Worth Dunbar wide receiver Darius White was supposed to take his official visit to Oklahoma for the Bedlam game, but decided to re-schedule. Now it looks like White might not make it back to Norman in the near future, as he canceled another visit and decided to travel to Stillwater instead, a slap in the face for the Oklahoma coaching staff. Without any word from White, it's hard to say why he made this decision, but it certainly bodes well for Texas in his recruitment and poorly for the Sooners. As for Oklahoma State, it's possible that the Cowboys are back in the race for White, but it probably says more about the other two programs and their respective positions.
For the first time since his visit to Austin for the Kansas game, White spoke publicly on Tuesday about the trip to campus. White mentioned that he was hosted by Christian Scott, whom he called his "homeboy," while also saying that he spent time with Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley. Speculation has surrounded the impact of his new stepfather, thought to be nudging his stepson towards Oklahoma. However, White said that both his stepfather and his mother "loved" the environment and felt comfortable. As for White, he "liked everything about the game" and the campus, sounding more positive about Texas than he has in, well, roughly a year. Part of it may have been that he was able to "smooth everything out" with Mack Brown, a relatively nebulous statement that could be about the infamous incident with Favors at the spring game or could mean that they simply talked about why both sides had fallen out of contact. The other big news is that White was not able to make his scheduled trip to Norman last weekend and has not yet re-scheduled it. If he does not return, it would give the Longhorns the last say in his recruitment, potentially a major advantage for Texas, though it's hard to say how much of an impact the most recent visit makes in the mind of a recruit -- it probably changes on a case-by-case basis. The bottom line, however, is that the Longhorns are right back in the thick of it even if White isn't yet set to make a decision, with the earliest date he mentioned being the Under Armour All-American game on January 2nd.
For those following recruiting, I think we're counting this as bad news in the Darius White sweepstakes.
The latest twist in the Darius White recruitment is the move of Oklahoma to the top or near the top of his list. In his own words, he's liking Oklahoma, calling them "very good," while only saying that "Texas is good." He also says that he "doesn't have an order" right now and seems content to let the process play out -- a decision does not appear as imminent as it did few weeks ago. Is it panic time yet? Not sure about that, but it is definitely time to wonder what it is about Oklahoma and their future that appeals to him so much. There's going to be a pretty decent quarterback in Austin to throw to White over the next few years.
Darius White takes over the pole position, followed by Jeffcoat, Seastrunk, Reggie Wilson, and Taylor Bible. Unsurprisingly, a few Longhorn commits shot up: Tevin Jackson moved from 65 to 8, Chris Jones from NR to 12, Bryant Jackson from 50 to 13, Ashton Dorsey from NR to 23, Adrian Phillips from 81 to 24, and Greg Daniels from NR to 37. There's a lot of variance in these rankings, so take them for what you will. I'll let GoBR handle the rest of the heavy lifting.
