Coming into the weekend of the second Junior Day, an offer and commitment from Angleton athlete Quandre Diggs, the younger brother of former Texas great and current San Diego Charger Quentin Jammer, never received his offer during the weekend, as the coaching staff told him they wanted to continue to evaluate prospects in the defensive backfield. Turns out that evaluation didn't take particularly long, as Diggs committed to Texas about 24 hours after receiving his offer from Major Applewhite over the phone. The Longhorns offered Diggs as an athlete and he has the playmaking ability with the ball in his hands to warrant a look on that side of the ball, but he is on the record as saying that he wants to play defensive back in college and that is probably where he will end up as a Longhorn.

It's almost something of a recruiting cliche at this point that the players who commit to Texas instantly feel at home and appreciate the family atmosphere -- otherwise, why would they commit? Perhaps it's more telling for prospects considering the Longhorns to feel that way and Aztec (NM) offensive tackle Matthew Hegarty, after spending two days in Austin and attending both of the first two spring practices, commented twice in his Saturday interview with Orangebloods that he felt at home. The Longhorns clearly made a strong impression and Hegarty indicated that Texas will be in the mix when he makes a decision in the next several months. Junior Day visits to Notre Dame and Cal loom -- watch out for the Irish, as Hegarty's grandfather is a big Notre Dame fan, but the Longhorns are certainly in good shape with the talented tackle.

Klein Collins offensive tackle Garrett Greenlea has been one of the fastest-rising offensive line prospects in the state and though it took some time for him to register on the Texas recruiting radar, when the Longhorns offered on Saturday afternoon, Greenlea accepted. Of the four tackle prospects committed, Greenlea has the biggest and most college-ready frame and is a monster in the running game. His commitment gives the Longhorns all five of the top line prospects in the state and makes them a perfect five for five in securing commitments from in-state prospects. The next question is whether there is another spot open for either Matthew Hegarty or Christian Westerman and only the coaches know the answer to that question, but the best guess here is that there is because those two are simply too talented to pass up on. Carthage defensive end/linebacker Kendall Thompson is the 16th commit of the 2011 Texas Longhorns recruiting class and the first commitment of the second Junior Day. Confident of receiving his offer before the visit, Thompson did indeed receive it and wasted no time becoming a Longhorn. It's not clear if Texas offered him as a linebacker or defensive end, but Thompson has a similar frame to Steve Edmond, but is more likely to end up at defensive end.

The deepest running back class in the state just got a little bit smaller once again on Wednesday evening in terms of Texas recruiting when news trickled out that Abilene running back sensation Herschel Sims will not attend the second Texas Junior Day this weekend. Conventional wisdom holds that the Texas coaches probably conveyed to Sims that he was not going to receive an offer at the event and Sims decided it was not worth his time to travel to Austin. After the commitment of Brandon Williams to Baylor and the news on Sims, landing one of Malcolm Brown or Aaron Green has become even more important for Texas and the developments may also open the door for The Woodlands running back Daniel Lasco to receive an offer, but it sounds like Texas intends to focus on Brown and Green in an effort to let them know that they are the top targets on the board for the Longhorns.
