Hey all! I just got an email saying that Davey O'Brien Fan Voting is now open, so let's all do our best to get Garrett Gilbert to the top! Go to the link and vote for him once a day. Pass this message on as much as you can! Hook 'em!
Garrett Gilbert and Paden Kelley won't be the only former Lake Travis Cavaliers re-uniting on the Texas campus in the fall. Gilbert's long-time friend and favorite target, receiver Cade McCrary, will be an invited and preferred walk-on at Texas. McCrary, of course, has connections to Texas football, as he played an important role in introducing Gilbert to the Longhorns through his father, Hardee, the former defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator for Texas. My take: While McCrary is an excellent high school receiver, with more than 1,700 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, I would classify him as a product of the two systems in which he played and his close connection with one of the top quarterbacks in the country. Considering the incredible receiving depth in the state and the depth on the team or committed to play for the Longhorns, I just don't see McCrary seeing the field for the Longhorns unless the coaches really strike out on several evaluations.
No confirmation yet from Wood, but Orangebloods is now reporting Connor Wood as committed to the Longhorns, a move he apparently made yesterday evening (Inside Texas reports the same ($)). If true, recruiting is now done at the quarterback position, with Texas securing commitments from the only two they pursued. Wood fits perfectly into the Longhorn offense, but will have long wait ahead of him until Garret Gilbert leaves campus and allows him a chance to start. Great news for the Longhorns, though. Update: Now confirmed ($) by BOB, which spoke to Wood this evening.
I'm pretty excited about GG because I've known about how great this kid is for a long time. The guy who normally shoots Rockwall-Heath's games did the last Lake Travis game. I wanted to share it simply because Gilbert looks a man among boys in the pictures.
More accolades for the Texas standout commit who just broke Graham Harrell's state passing records en route to his second straight state title. The Texas AP Player of the Year is voted on by the Associated Press' sports writers and editors throughout the state; last year's winner (Jacquizz Rodgers, Lamar Consolidated) was the Pac 10 Freshman of the Year at Oregon State.
Texas QB Commit Garrett Gilbert (rivals, scout, espn) led the Cavs to beat Longview 48-23 in the 4A Division 1 Title Game. * Lake Travis View * Austin American Statesman (AP)
Jumping Matt Barkley.
Here's a good look at how the national media is viewing Mack's stellar 2009 recruiting class. Per ESPN's Tom Luginbill: "What else is new? If ever there was a proponent for an early signing period, it would be Mack Brown's Texas program. Most importantly, it has hit the marks at quarterback in Garrett Gilbert (Austin, Texas/Lake Travis) and on the offensive line. Cornerback Marcus Davis (League City, Texas/Cleer Creek) is very talented and physical. Why no one is talking about TE Barrett Matthews (Houston/North Shore), we have no idea. If RB Chris Whaley (Madisonville, Texas) pans out, then Texas may have filled its running back need, but we feel Whaley could still end up at another position."
