Fourteen Deep?

Offensive coordinator Greg Davis said this year's bunch will feature as many as 14 guys who could see action. Remember, it's usually a luxury if a line can go seven deep.

Comments are from the 8 keys to success story in the Statesman. From PB's depth chart, we've got 10 identified. Who are these other four guys?

RT Kyle Hix Aundre McGaskey

RG Cedric Dockery Britt Mitchell

C Chris Hall Buck Burnette

LG Charlie Tanner Michael Huey

LT Adam Ulatoski Tray Allen

Steve Moore? True Freshman Mark Buchanan? True Freshman Luke Poehlmann? True Freshman David Snow?

Are these guys really ready to hit the field?

Poll
Of the four "other guys" on the 2008 roster, who do you think has the best chance to see playing time this season?
  • Steve Moore
  • David Snow
  • Luke Poehlmann
  • Mark Buchanan

OU Summer 2008 = UT Summer 07?

Oklahoma has kicked freshman wide receiver Josh Jarboe off the team, coach Bob Stoops announced Friday. "We are disappointed in this outcome, but our complete review and the final decision is in the best interest of the program," Stoops said in a prepared statement. Jarboe, ranked 13th on ESPN's list of top high school players last season, was sentenced in May to two years' probation and 80 hours of community service for carrying a gun on the grounds of his high school in Decatur, Ga. An assistant principal caught him there with a pistol in his possession in the school parking lot. Jarboe was initially charged with a felony, but his charges were reduced to a misdemeanor. Earlier this week, Jarboe was the subject of a 74-second video posted on YouTube. Jarboe's obscenity-laced rap included references to shooting people and guns.

Big-Bucks Recruiting

Which team in the Big XII spends the most on recruiting? Texas? Nope. OU? Not so much. Half their recruiting costs are covered by Big Red Auto anyway. OSU? Boone Pickens has bankrolled a lot of facility upgrades, but the Cowboys aren't on the list.
The team that spends the most on recruiting in the Big 12 might surprise you. It's Kansas State, which ranked fifth nationally with a total of $1.316 million, an increase of 267 percent from 1997 and a 110 percent increase from 2002. The reason for Kansas State's philosophical change came when Ron Prince was hired to replace Bill Snyder. Instead of mining the areas near the school's Manhattan campus, Prince opted for a national recruiting philosophy dotted with players from both coasts. Men's basketball coach Frank Martin has made a similar change from Jim Wooldridge's old ways.
The top 15 schools can be found at this link. What would be more interesting would be to see each school's budget as a percentage of the overall school budget. To use the Arms Race analogy, this would likely be like Belgium spending 45% of its GDP on weapons of mass destruction.

Joseph in trouble - again

Anyone surprised?
A former Texas football player remained in Travis County Jail after he was arrested Monday for violating terms of his probation by failing to show up for a court date. Robert Joseph, 20, was jailed under bonds totaling $3,000, said Roger Wade, a spokesman for the Travis County Sheriff's Department.
Joseph Didn't someone do an all-Longhorns prison team in a previous post? Seems like we've got enough people to field a full squad by now.

2010 Bball Recruit?

Was just browsing on Scout today and had a bit of a surprise - Texas has evidently signed the top recruit in the 2010 basketball class. Have I just been sleep-walking since March Madness? How did I miss this one? And why haven't PB and AW been jumping up and down with excitement? Can anyone share the full story on this guy? Another KD in the making? Who else is on Rick's radar? 2010 Top 50

"Burnt orange fans are encouraged to beat the rush and start criticizing offensive coordinator Greg Davis now."

I just love Pat Forde... even when I don't agree with him. Pat Forde Column I do agree with his comment about the schedule though. Pretty much a perfect storm for Texas this year. This one is pretty good too:
10. If Mark Sanchez stays healthy, he will be the starting quarterback all season at USC. Hopefully Mitch Mustain's mom will be OK with that.
Cracks me up. And makes me grateful my Mom is so cool!

Fresno State Bulldogs?

Are you frickin' kidding me? I didn't even know they played sports besides football. Fresno State has upset Rice and #2 UNC in Omaha, and are now one win away (against either UNC again or LSU) from playing for the national championship. With top seed Miami a loss away from elimination, we could realistically see two teams who were not seeded in the Top 8 (Stanford and Fresno State) playing for the national championship for the first time ever.

The girl can JUMP!

Photo of new volleyball recruit Rachel Adams, who will join the Horns this Fall. Between Rachel and Destinee Texas will have two of the highest leapers in the country - a definite advantage given that our setter is 6'4" and can position the ball at the top of these girls' jump for an almost unblockable kill.

Russell appears to have made the right decision, after all

I wondered in a post earlier this Spring if Kyle Russell made a mistake spurning the Cardinals and returning for his Junior season at Texas. It was a tough year for Kyle, and a tough year for Texas, and I thought his draft stock had been seriously damaged. Thankfully for Kyle, though, the Los Angeles Dodges saw through the struggles to the sheer talent, and selected Kyle with the 93rd pick of the 2008 draft. So Kyle wins on two counts - he goes earlier and should get better money, and he goes to a great team in a fun town. The pre-draft prognosticators all had Jordan Danks going before Kyle, but Jordan didn't go until the 7th round with the 210th pick (White Sox), so I won't be surprised if he comes back. Congrats to Kyle, and best of luck in the bigs..... Kyle 40AS, I didn't get a chance to stroll through the draft to see how many of our 2008 recruits got drafted, and how many might be likely to sign instead of coming to Texas?
