Broncos Release Henry

Too bad for Travis Henry but great news for Selvin Young as he should be seen as the man in Denver after joining the team as an undrafted free agent last year and having a solid rookie season.  I have to admit I don't follow the Broncos all too closely, is there another running back in the pipeline or recently signed that I'm not thinking about?

On another note, I and a few others were a little upset with the Titans when they let go of Travis Henry in favor of LenDale White.  He had a great season during VY's rookie campaign while Thunder was only so-so at best.  I thought it was a bone headed move but maybe we should give them credit for seeing attitude problems even back then.

Boobie's got a boo-boo

Daniel Gibson is out of Cleveland's line up as a result of a seperated shoulder.  It's too bad for both he and the Cavs as he was a bright spot for the team in last year's Finals run.  It looks like they'll need some magic to keep from being eliminated by the Celtics on Friday.  On a side note, does LeBron always refer to himself in the third person?

Volunteers discover capitalism

"Tennessee students wanting to see the Volunteers play will have to pay beginning this fall."

No this isn't for volleyball games, this is a new policy for football.  Wow, are you kidding me?! I had no idea that Tennessee had never charged students for football tickets before.  Do they not have a business school in Rocky Top? Can you imagine what that would be like in Austin?!  Every student and jackass with an old student ID (guilty here) would step over whoever they needed to get in the stadium.  Their season ticket price is still cheaper as we have to pay for the Longhorn Sports Package and then can purchase a season ticket.  Not the case in Knoxville.  Makes me wonder how they do it with other sports.

Durant Hits a Buzzer Beater in 2OT

Yes it's Saturday but the Horns are off so I figured a little basketball was ok.  Kevin Durant is already having an impact in the NBA with his Buzzer Beater 3 in Double Overtime to life Seatle over the Atlanta Hawks last night.  Here's the article

Rethinking the BCS strategy

I just wanted to post my thoughts somewhere and see what people smarter than me have to say.  After seeing that Kansas and Missouri continue to roll, I'm having second thoughts about exactly what to hope for in order for the Horns to get a BCS bid.  Until now, the discussion has centered around hoping that Kansas and Missouri stumble somewhere and then lose to OU and hope that BCS bowls will choose a 2-loss Texas team over the others.  Here are my thoughts on this:

Hawaii vs. Texas in the Rose Bowl?

No probably not, but here's a neat LA Times article discussing all the possibilities (from the more likely to the downright crazy) that bowl officials are grappling with.  Of course we do still have to win out to even be considered, but hey its fun to dream...

The 100

The Longhorns are well represented in Ivan Maisel's list of "The 100" which counts down the top 100 plays, performances and moments that define college football.  Included in the top 20 are:

#14 - Tommy Nobis' 4th and 1 goal line stand against Joe Namath and Alabama in the 1965 Sugar Bowl

#9 - James Street's 44 yard pass on 4th and 3 that would lead to a win over Arkansas and a National Championship in 1969

#5 - Vince Young's 928 sneak on 4th and 5 to defeat USC for the 2005 National Championship

I bet every generation thought they had seen the best there would ever be but the Texas Longhorns are a special and historic team for a reason.  I have hope that the best is yet to come still...

USC Recruits an 8th Grader

I don't know if I was more shocked to read that they had done it or that they had done it for the 2nd time!

What sort of ridiculousness is this, or am I way off for thinking this is a bit wierd/shortsighted?

Clemens back with the Yankees

Just saw this a couple minutes ago.  There's so much that went into this decision it could take a while to get through it all, but you have to think Astro's front office has a lot to do with this.  First losing Andy, which probably affected Roger's decision, now this.  We all know about the Texan's management debacles, and now the Rockets seem to be in a pit as well.  Are Houston teams just cursed with poor management?

Michael Griffin

I was fortunate enough to attend the Academic Awards Banquet for male athletes last night in the Erwin Center.  First off, congrats to all the young men who recieved awards last night.  It's not easy to be a great student and a great athlete.  But I wanted to especially bring attention to the presence of Michael Griffin.  Despite his exciting weekend and all the promise of his future career, he still boarded a plane Sunday evening to be able to be in Austin for this ceremony.  The football team had several athletes receiving academic awards so the crowd was holding applause as each name was called out.  This wasn't the case with Michael Griffin.  He got quite the applause from the crowd in appreciation of his continued academic dedication.

If this doesn't show strong character I don't know what does.  Even though he and his family are set financially for a long time to come, he still values his education and (at least I'm inferring) his experience at the University of Texas.  This is a huge reflection on his own character but also his family and even the coaching staff and the athletics department support staff.

Again, congrats to all the recipients but a special congrats to Michael Griffin.
