I wanted to take a moment away from sports to say good bye to a wonderful friend and mentor that passed away early this morning, Brian Newberry. Many of you readers knew Mr. Newberry well, as I did, and are saddened by the news of his passing. Mr. Newberry was one of those special Dads that always made you feel welcomed, gave you a boost of encouragement when you needed it, patted you on the back and congratulated you when you achieved something, and worked tirelessly to make his community a better place.
Mr. Newberry enrolled at UT in 1963 when Texas won its very first national championship. He attended every home game in 2005 and even managed to make it up to Columbus for the Ohio State game. His battle with cancer prevented him from attending the Rose Bowl, but he was able to watch the game at home with his family. I am so happy that he was able to see Texas win that game and moved on having seen all four Texas national championships.
For all of us that know the Newberry family, I think we can all say that we aspire to have families as close, loving, and supportive as theirs. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Good bye, Brian. Thank you for all the wonderful memories.
Peter
