This series got a little sidetracked with OMG Major hysteria, but we'll pick up where we left off with the five biggest surprises and disappointments of 2007.
When I was doing a bunch of radio spots to promote my book this summer, almost every host asked me to talk about a player I thought was primed to become a household name. And I would start gushing about Jermichael Finley. "Freak of an athlete." "Too fast for linebackers to cover; too big for a safety to handle."
Though Finley (45 catches, 575 yards, 2 touchdowns) hardly had a bad season, his production and performance fell well short of expectations. Part of the blame goes to Greg Davis and Colt McCoy, but Finley himself wasn't always stellar, either - his dropped ball problems in College Station being the most notable disappointment.
What we do know is that when he played well and when the coaches used him aggressively, he was a special offensive weapon. The first half of the Red River Rivalry both tantalized and tortured Texas fans; in the end, though he flashed that exceptional talent and production, he never became the player we all hoped for.
