Longhorns Take Game One; Saturday Open Thread

Early in the ballgame, Texas was a little sloppy last night. Jungmann did not appear to have his best stuff and the ball got kicked around the infield a little. But they pulled it together in time to avoid losing the first game of a series for the first time all year. The Longhorns took Game One in Lincoln 5-3, and Texas Sports has a nice recap. Meanwhile, the Aggies lost...but not in a conference game. Because the Big XII has only 10 baseball schools, each team plays one non-conference weekend series after the conference season has begun. A&M is playing Dallas Baptist this weekend, while the Longhorns play Texas Southern next weekend.

So last night's win staked Texas to a half-game lead in the Big XII over Little Brother. A&M being essentially "idle" makes it all the more important for Augie's boys to try for the sweep in Lincoln; these very same Cornhuskers travel to College Station next weekend ahead of the season-ending battle between Texas and A&M. If Texas gets the sweep over Nebraska, the best A&M will be able to do is enter the finale in a tie for first. That would put a lot of pressure on the Aggies--which recent history indicates would have a negative impact on their ability to, you know, respond to said pressure.

Cole Green is on the hill for a 2:05 PM CDT start today.
