Support PB by Supporting Financial Literacy in Central Texas

Update, 9:45 PM: BOOM! Thousand dollar goal for the afternoon: complete. Y'all are amazing. Thank you so much to all of you who made a donation in support of Junior Achievement, and to those of you who haven't had a chance to join the fiesta yet: well, what are you waiting for?

As some of you may know, I serve on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of Central Texas, an organization that means a lot to me personally and has a tremendously valuable impact on our community at large.

Supporting college kids on the football field is a lot of fun, but supporting kids in the community by teaching them financial literacy is far more important. As anyone who entered the adult world without these skills can attest, you're at a huge disadvantage if you don't understand things like the time value of money, or how to balance a checkbook, or how calculate compound interest on a credit card. Junior Achievement of Central Texas empowers kids in the community by teaching them these essential financial skills, sending its trained volunteers directly into school classrooms to deliver its award-winning curiculum.

As a board member, this is an especially exciting time of year to be involved with the organization, as we prepare to host our annual Austin Marathon Relay on Sunday -- sponsored this year by the awesome Austin-based RetailMeNot.com, who donated $100,000 to the JA Central Texas as the event sponsor.

And now it's our turn to support financial literacy in Central Texas, Burnt Orange Nation. If you you can afford to pitch in, I would be incredibly grateful for your support. Whether you can afford $5, $50, or $500, every dollar helps, and I've set a modest fundraising goal of $1,000 that I know we can achieve. The BON community is a wonderfully generous, vibrant community, and I have no doubt that we'll have little trouble banding together to support the community at large by meeting or exceeding that goal.

You can also support Junior Achievement of Central Texas by participating in this year's RetailMeNot Austin Marathon Relay this upcoming Sunday, September 23rd. Registration closes soon, though, so grab four running buddies and get your team entered today. Registration is just $35 per person, with each five-person team running a 5k, 5k, 10k, 10k, and 12k for the relay marathon.

This year we also have an elite running team that will be on hand to try and win $100,000 from Adidas for running a sub-2:00:00 marathon. If the five members of the running team all hit their personal best times on Sunday, they'll be a few seconds under, so it should be really exciting to see if they can do it.

Thanks again for your support. I can't thank y'all enough. Hook 'em!
