Texas Baseball Takes on Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Texas begins its home slate with a midweek game at 6 PM tonight at UFCUDFF.

The Longhorns will play at the Disch for the first time this year as they take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi in a midweek game. Texas (2-2) will send freshman Blake Goins to the mound for his first collegiate start though we would expect to see several pitchers, including redshirt sophomore John Curtiss, pitch for the Longhorns.

The Islanders come to Austin after splitting a four game series of their own last weekend against UT Pan American. TAMUCC was decent a year ago, going 33-24 overall and finished second in the Southland conference. They're an experienced squad, with juniors and seniors accounting for 83% of at bats last weekend and 61% of innings pitched last weekend. The Horns, by contrast, got just 27% of last weekend's at bats from juniors and seniors.

Junior outfielder Tyler Ware led the Islanders last weekend, putting up a Mark Payton-like line of .600 batting average, a double, a triple and two walks (.750 OBP). Junior pitcher Trevor Belicek will take the mound for TAMUCC. Belicek was great as a sophomore, going 9-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 12 starts. Belicek was brilliant in Southland conference play last year as he put up a 7-0 record with 2.58 ERA and a complete game in 9 conference starts. Belicek neither strikes out nor walks a ton of hitters.

Ordinarily these midweek games wouldn't be so much about winning and losing but rather getting young players into the action. When your team hasn't made the postseason in two years and is coming off a four game split, however, winning the game can be important for getting some momentum.

Here's hoping the Horns can get over .500 tonight. If you're going to the Disch and want to post some pictures here for use in future posts, that'd be peachy. Otherwise, this is your open thread should you tire of watching Texas blow out Iowa State. The game is on LHN and starts at 6 PM.
