This open thread is being composed on Saturday, before the second game of the series has begun. So I don't know at this moment whether Texas is relying on Nathan Thornhill and his sick 0.88 ERA to get the sweep or a 2-1 series win. I sure hope it's the former! But I acknowledge it could be the latter and that would be ok too.
Thornhill has been just excellent since the short-lived experiment of trying him at closer ended. Baylor counters with Dillon Newman, who is no slouch himself at 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA. The senior right hander out of Belton was drafted by the Astros in the 16th round last year; it's notable that he decided to come back to Waco for his senior season. Was it because he knew he'd likely be thrust into the five-man rotation with the sad-sack 'Stros immediately, and figured that was too much too soon? Or was it that he realized the Baylor Bears had a better shot at making the MLB playoffs this year than Houston did? #CardsFanTroll
