Six years ago today Texas beat Stanford 5-1. The win gave Texas a nice series victory in Palo Alto as the Horns were on their way to a fabulous 2009 season. It took five years and 364 days for Texas to beat Stanford on the road. The Cardinal demolished the Horns in 2012 and 2013 and Texas lost a pair of close games to start the 2015 series before Saturday's victory.
Texas jumped on top 3-0 through two innings on Saturday before surviving a number of Stanford threats in the late innings. Stanford put 10 runners on base over the last four innings but came away with only the one run. Texas got on the board in the first on a Tres Barrera single with two outs scored Collin Shaw who hit his 11th double on the year. It's obviously early, but Shaw is on pace to shatter the University of Texas record for doubles in a season (32).
Josh Sawyer will be on the mound today at 3 PM as Texas goes for the series split. A split in Palo Alto would be big as Texas would head into conference play with solid road splits against a pair of quality teams in Rice and Stanford. The conference play starts slow with home series against "weaker" Big 12 teams West Virginia and Kansas State, so getting there with a little momentum would be real nice.
